wheel chair needed

we will be boarding the eclipse in Southampton saturday. Unfortunately I just injured my syndesmosis and another ligament and need crutches to move.

I have been looking foreward to this cruise for a very very long time and do not want to cancel it...

 

I read somewhere that celebrity would sometimes be able to provide wheelchairs. Is that correct?

You should immediately contact Celebrity directly or via your travel agent. Here is the info on how to do this:

 

For more information contact our Access Department at (866) 592-7225 (voice), fax (954) 628-9622, send an e-mail to special_needs@celebrity.com, or have your local Travel Agent or International Representative contact us.

 

When it comes to wheelchairs they only have a limited number aboard and without prior arrangements there is no guarantee that you could get a chair. In many cases, if you need a wheelchair for the cruise they will suggest that you arrange for a chair through a rental company (Celebrity can help with this). Another option would be to rent an electric scooter

This company are excellent, they will provide a wheelchair or scooter. My mother used them, the scooter was waiting in her cabin for her upon embarkation. Efficient service.

One more suggestion, if you are flying at all, notify your air carrier so they can pre-arrange some help for you as well. We messed up on that one leaving Heathrow last week and while our carrier was most helpful, the line for special assistance was so long DW opted to crutch her way to our gate...it took 30 minutes to get there. Because they knew when we landed, a chair was waiting for her and we were wisked out and thru customs and imigration in record time. Around the ship there were lots of offers from Celebrity for a wheelchair but it was not needed. The only problem she had on the ship was with security, they kept pushing her to "walk thru the scanner without the crutches" after a few times trying, with a bit of help from them we finally just said no so they skipped the scanner and did a quick pat down. As good as Celebrity is, their security people are bit lacking in brains at times...

We've used Care Vacations for mobility rentals, and I highly recommend them. They do handle Southampton, but it all depends upon equipment availability.

Try shopmobility in Southampton - they may be able to help. When I needed a wheelchair for 2 weeks on P&O Azura I booked through a company they recommended. It was £90 4 years ago. Can't remember the name though - sorry.

Red Cross might be able to help as well.

We know from experience that Celebrity is VERY reluctant to give their on board wheelchairs. They don't have many, and keep them for any emergency that might happen on board. Best to rent your own from a local company. Unfortunately, it's too late to order one from CareVacations as they require at least a 7 day lead time.

 

The only time Celebrity provides wheelchairs is for embarkation and disembarkation. Otherwise, passengers are expected to provide their own wheelchairs. Even the Celebrity website states they provide wheelchairs for embarking and disembarking only.

I rented a scooter from Carevactions last year for our 14 day Baltic from Southampton. It was $625.00 delivered to the ship. You have to pay in full at the time you make the reservation.

We did not take the cruise. I lost my payment as we had to cancel within 15 days of the sailing. It was covered by my travel insurance.

Maybe we were just lucky but when we cruised with my mother we had no trouble getting a wheelchair. We did reserve a scooter through one of the mentioned vendors, but you don't have access to the scooter until you have access to your room. When we dropped off our bags one of the porters noticed my mother would need assistance. We waited about 15 mins, then someone from Celebrity arrived with a wheelchair. We were immediately accommodated through checkin and escorted onboard. We were handed off to ship based crew member who brought us to the buffet. We were told we could keep the wheelchair in our cabin in case we needed it.

Thank you eberybody for your very helpful comments. I received responses from both carevacstion and celebrity special needs dep. As Knolmom correctly assumed, it was too late to rent from Carevacstions. Cel however have told me they would try to provide a wheelchair. They were very prompt in responding and I must say if they reallly come through with the wheelchair, I will be extremely impressed by their customer service. I will get back to you with an update once onboard (provided we are online) or back from the cruise.

I need one for my father and Celebrity told me they only have transport wheelchairs for em/debarkation assistance and will not guarantee access during the cruise. FYI I'm also going through a local affiliated company Celeb recommended

Wow, it must have changed. We took my mom and dad on a cruise in 2008 and three days prior to leaving my mom fell and her mobility wasn't great. Nothing broken but bruised and sore and at 87 she needed some help. We did nothing ahead of time, but when we got to the port someone asked us if she needed assistance and brought a wheelchair.

We kept it for about 5 or 6 days, at which time we brought it ourselves down to deck 2 and they gave her a cane to use. By the time we disembarked mom was back to her old self. She had a great time and Celebrity was wonderful about helping. Sad to hear they may not always have enough chairs or that one has to rent one for so much money. We didn't have to pay a penny.

I am on the Eclipse right now.

I must say that I am very impressed: Right when I entered the cruise terminal in SOU, a nice lady organised a wheelchair to help me get on board. Once on board, I asked at guest relations, if the reservation had gone through and they instantly delivered a nice wheelchair to my stateroom.

 

Did I say, that I am impressed?

 

On another note:

Beautiful ship, so far very nice food. I am very happy that I did not cancel!

I requested the use of a chair last year. At the port the help is excellent and I cannot praise the help and service highly enough but the requested wheelchair for onboard use never materialised and I had to cope without. I have booked a scooter this year from "Mobility at sea" in Southampton. I probably wish now I had booked disabiity cabin as I am worried as to how much space it will take up in the room.

What level cabin did you book? I think the scooters can only fit in the accessible + suite level cabins.

Most scooters (except bariatric ones) will fit into any of the cabins, yes they do take up space, but it is manageable.

 

My mum parked hers underneath where the coat hooks are located and the end of the dressing table. Perfectly able to walk past with a little care to get in and out of the cabin and access the bathroom.

 

 

This was on a S class ship
