ship appears to be fairly empty and sails in just over 30 days

We are booked into an inside cabin for a 1-nighter from Seattle to Vancouver. When I logged into the personalizer today I thought I would check to see how many cabins still remain available for this sailing. There are a lot! Not so much for the inside and oceanview (obstructed or not) but balconies and minis have many many rooms available.

 

This is just an extra cruise for us and since it is only 1-night, it doesn't matter what type of cabin we have. However, it would be very nice if Princess decided to upgrade us to at least an oceanview. Seeing that we are just over 30 days away from sailing what are the odds that an upgrade will come our way? :D

 

Fingers crossed but if we end up with the cabin we have so be it.

You'd be shocked how fast they will fill it up at the end...especially a short cruise like that...

First of all, as Paul said, they may be holding a LOT of unassigned "guarantees"...

Also, if it comes down to the end and they are not sold out, realize that Holland America--Princess' sister line--has its Corporate HQ in Seattle...A bunch of corporate employees will grab unsold cabins as "freebies"...

And then, cruise lines also like to give away unsold cabins where it sees an advantage: Big roller gamblers...and local travel agents...

 

We were on a Princess 3-nighter once that appeared to have several dozen unsold cabins nearing the sail date...and it sailed almost full. The only cabins they apparently didn't book someone into were a few unsold suites--and they did NOT upgrade any of us into those suites!

These one-nighters are usually sold at a price that is lower than the bus fare between Seattle and Vancouver.

Many of the people who book this one night "cruise" are there only because it is cheaper than the bus ride they would normally take.

Don't attempt to apply logic to the workings of the Upgrade Fairy. Just be thankful when she does come :)

 

Yes, she is one tricky fairy who keeps the plans/designs very top secret! She has visited us on occasion and are always thankful when she does. I won't be upset if she doesn't visit us this time around but I would be more then happy if she does. :)

We did a three night cruise from LA to Vancouver this last April on the Ruby. There were a bunch of cabins still available less than a couple of weeks out. We were offered an upsell offer to a suite from a regular balcony cabin. The cost difference made no sense to us so we declined.

 

The funny thing is that when we called to make final payment the rep said that you are marked as eligible for a free upgrade. When we called to decline the upsell that rep also said the same thing. BTW, we never did get that elusive free upgrade offer.......:cool:

We booked a one-nighter next month aboard the Crown (time to go add that to my signature). We booked category IE (next-to-"bottom" interior; essentially the highest category we could get at the lowest price point) and got upgraded to category IB (next-to-"top" interior) once Princess assigned a cabin. That's all that I expected/hoped for upgrade-wise.

That's true. I saw one of the overnight cruises from Seattle to Vancouver going for $29 last year!

Princess dumped the cabins on a 10-day Caribbean cruise that we were on. They targeted people who they knew would be able to come on short notice. . .living establishments for retirees, of which there are many in FL. I knew something was up when we were upgraded from a not very good balcony to a good minisuite. It was a memorable cruise. . .not in a good way. They probably handle things differently now. But, your chances of an upgrade should be good.

That's not true for everyone. I would love to cruise for one night but it's not worth flying to California for a one night cruise.

 

Certainly NOT worth it for when you arrive in California and then have to purchase a last minute air fare to Seattle since the 1 day cruises are between Seattle and Vancouver.

I find the most annoying things are Embarkation and Debarkation .

One night cruise you get them both within 18 hours or less :-(

Did many 1 nighter's in my years as a TA, but those were complementry and worth the hassle for the product knowledge received .

We are on a 3-night Grand Princess Vancouver to San Francisco in 6 weeks or so and my TA was able to upgrade me from BD (balcony) to MA (highest mini-suite) so it is worth asking!

 

Really I wanted the price difference in OBC for drinks & casino - which we've gotten in the past on Carnival - but upgrade is better than nothing :)
