I am back from the port $400.00 lighter...lol. I spoke to a Carnival Care Specialist. The guests who disembarked today were primarily guests from San Juan, international guests and guests who expressed the desire to leave as soon as possible. I was not able to confirm if those who do not live in San Juan are being provided hotel accommodations in San Juan and then returning home on their previously scheduled flights.

Thanks again, Pauley, for your continued updates! :) A little confusing with Guests being flown tonite to San Juan!

For anyone who is worried about Sundays cruise - The Embassy Suites in San Juan has rooms available for $129

. You get a hot breakfast and a managers cocktail reception at 5:00 p.m. We stayed there a few years ago post cruise. It's a 5 min walk to the beach and the beach is gorgeous. We have stayed in other hotels as well but I can't recall the names. There are some lovely boutique hotels in Old San Juan. None of these are all inclusive.

Also Large Grocery store around the corner where you can get cooked food or, alcohol ,groceries etc.

I love cruising and will continue to cruise in light of these situations. I have sailed the Liberty and the Splendor and both broke down. I was not on them at the time but I have sailed them. Now the reason I mention this is because there were mentions on our cruises about issues with the ships. IMHO these ships are pushed too hard and need more down time to maintain them. I know time is money and money is time but these fires and breakdowns are starting to happen more frequently. These ships receive a lot of wear and tear and need more time in port to be overhauled. Just an observation.

Ok, I just spoke to "Classy" Cassie, who called guest services on my behalf. If a guest wants to stay in San Juan and then take their pre booked flight home, Carnival will pay for the hotel. In other news, not all guests who are disembarking today have actually left the ship. I am not certain how many zones have disembarked since I left to explore St Thomas, but I can confirm that zone 27 is still on the ship.

I think its always a lose-lose for the cruise companies. If they schedule the ships with lots of maintenance time, then they are underutilized and the costs go up and people complain things are too expensive. If they push out maintenance then it keeps costs down, makes cruises more affordable, but their is always a chance of problems. You can't have it both ways. Problems happen no matter what, but if the cruise companies can handle the problems in an organized and fair way, that is all people should expect. From what we hear here, Carnival did a good job at handling a bad situation.

There is a full technical and maintenance crew on these ships at all times. Maintenance is an ongoing job that occurs all of the time, day and night, at sea and in ports. There is a requirement for a two dry docks every 5 years with no greater than a 3 year interval between the two. And there are specific USCG inspection schedules and requirements for certification.

Interesting...that's a better deal than we received from Oceania after the Insignia fire. We just paid our own hotel room in Miami until our flight (Oceania picked up first night in Miami) which was no issue since we also received a 100% refund. I never pressed for more and we were in the minority of passengers who did not have flights through the cruise line.

I've been following this thread and it seems to me Carnival has been doing a very good job thus far and has been very fair with compensation. Much better than the Viking Oceans did with their July mechanical issue when their brand new ship lost power in Tallin Estonia.

Pauleydm, I was wondering if you or anyone has seen the CCL president yet? JH said she was coming and wanted to talk to people and such...

I responded to his message saying that she needed to find you and thank you for all you've done for us by keeping us informed. I told him you need to get a ship on a stick and a bottle of champagne too! :)

I hope she finds you or you find her and tell her who you are. You are the stand out rock star of this whole thing... and they should acknowledge that!!!

Thanks again for all you've done!

Update: The planes carrying the first batch of guests are on their way to San Juan. Once those planes return, the next set of guests will fly tonight. Zones 23 and 24 were just called.

So are you flying out tonight or Friday? Have you heard about your flight? Is there two seatings in the MDR still or has that changed. Any thoughts on your discounted cruise?

Thanks so much for such concise accurate info. You are da bomb.

Passengers flying to San Juan tomorrow and Friday have not been informed of their flights yet. As I said before, it is Carnival"s intention to inform all remaining guests this evening. All hotel, restaurant and entertainment options are functioning as normal. The only exception is that the Fun Shops have been closed since we arrived in St Thomas. As far as my 50% off cruise, I will most likely book the Carnival Vista once it reaches its home port of Miami. The 50% off cruise is valid for any 2 to 7 day cruise within the next 2 years. There are some exclusions.

Pauleydm. Thank you for all the info, that you have provided over the last few days. Liberty is my favorite ship to date. Sorry that your cruise did not go as planned, but you seem to have a great attitude towards what all happened. thanks again, you should get a CC award for this great reporting:)

So 770 people are looking for hotel rooms in SJU tonight:eek: Will be interesting to see what if any assistance Carnival can offer in that regard.

I think a large number of passengers on the cruise are from PR. So I doubt all 770 are looking for hotel rooms.

This is not entirely true. Whether you have enough oxygen or not if you build up too much co2 you will die. It's not an instant process but it will kill you. When you see movies in which someone blocks the outflow of the exhaust from the car directing it into the interior to commit suicide what they are dying from is co2.

It becomes an issue when you pass out from a lack of oxygen, any gas that displaces oxygen in sufficient quantities will kill you if left in that environment long enough.

This will probably be my last post for tonight. All guests that were scheduled to disembark today are off the ship. Guests that will depart on Thursday and Friday are still waiting for confirmation of their travel days and times.
