Sheraton Old San Juan Casino Closed?

Just read a trip advisor review that was posted 3 days ago that said the casino is now closed. I checked the hotel website and there's no mention or any photos of the casino. Does anyone have anymore information? We are booked for 2 nights at the end of October. It won't make a huge difference but we were looking forward to a little pre-cruise gambling.

Very interesting...thanks for the information....We'll be staying at the Sheraton Old Town...but not having a casino means nothing to us...we can drive to the Indian casino's here in the Los Angeles area (Palm Springs my favorite) or head to Las Vegas ;)

I work in the casino industry in Puerto Rico and the closing of the Sheraton Old San Juan took most casino operators by surprise since they had solid action for such a (relatively) small casino in the San Juan area. There were casinos in far worse shape that were (and still are) expected to reduce or close their operations before the Sheraton Old San Juan. The economic depression hasn't reached it's turn around point here yet and things are likely to get a bit worse before that time comes. Casinos here have a big senior player base and the economy has hit them hard. Expendable income is not the same as years before and in turn it has hit casino revenues hard. Ilegal (or legal depending on who you ask) video lottery-type of machines installed everywhere from gas stations to bakeries have also eroded casino revenues and even though the Government has a huge stake in casino slots revenues (over 50%) they have done little to help the industry and some operators are shifting their focus elsewhere.

In Sheraton's case they will be building a Walgreen's and a Margaritaville where the casino used to be. BTW...here in Puerto Rico Walgreen's and CVS are in the mist of an outrageous competition where one opens basically feet apart or a few blocks down from each other. So a dock-front property like the Sheraton, so close to CVS, makes sense to Walgreen's in this stupid commercial battle.

That also happens in most metropolitan areas in the continental US,multiple drug stores at most major intersections.

I'm curious about the Margaritaville..is there a target date for its completion?

I see they are doing a vacation club at the Wyndham Rio Mar. Are you saying this is an additional Margaritaville?
