Pros/Cons when using cash for cruise acct?

Thanks for explaining.

We already have OBC (at cruise booking plus I called in and purchased more). So would it just be a matter of selecting cash or credit card at check in?

You could select at check-in, or before check-in by using online check-in on Royal's website.

We too have purchased OBC at the 1.1% rate.

If you want to be able to withdraw cash without a 5% fee select a cash account.

We will be using a cash acc't this time. We have a large amount of refundable OBC and expect some will be left over at the end of the cruise. Can we close out the account (take whatever cash is left over) at Guest Services before the last night and apply a credit card or can we only take money out through the casino prior to the last night?

Cons to having a cash account:

Have to carry large sums of cash when traveling.

Have to stand in line at Guest Services.

Dumb question, but to add to the cash account, then I assume you need to top up with cash as opposed to another source?

Not a dumb question. You can pay down the cash account with cash, traveler's checks, credit card, or debit card.

I've always used cash for my account. I put in as much as I 'assume' I will spend (usually $25-$50.00) a day and just check it as the week goes on. I also set aside a small amount in case I want to splurge on something special..

Never had any issues settling the account when the trip was over.

We are in a similar position, anyone know?

You can cash out any excess OBC at Guest Services on the last evening. You can also apply a credit card at any point during the cruise.

This will be our first cruise in January on Brilliance. I set up our cruise account as cash. For now. Have heard way too many stories about cc's being charged for misc. things after cruise.

Does anyone have any cons to doing this? Or are they basically all pros?

Also if you do or have done this, how much cash did you put on your account? We have $200 obc and we are NOT buying a drink package as our cruise is only 4 nights. How much would be a good amount to bring? IYO.

Thank you in advance for your responses

Difference is that you need to carry cash the whole trip, which can be stolen, but you credit card is protected for fraud.

What is way too many stories? Millions of people cruise, and a few questionable charges, where many of them are legit.

I was actually under the assumption that we handed over the cash as soon as we boarded. So therefore would not be holding onto it the whole trip. I can only assume now since reading all the other answers of people who DO use cash to pay for their accounts that they lock the money in their room safe? Therefer again not really "carrying it around the whole trip". If this is incorrect please correct me.

Are there atms onboard that you can access your money instead of bringing cash with you?

Thank you all for you answers!

O, and to answer your question, way too many stories is around 20 which to me is way too many. I have no clue as to the people on this site if they are legit or not. I would tend to think they would not be lying but you never know. However I have spoke to people who I personally know who have had this happen so yes I will believe they are speaking the truth

My family have all purchased on board credit prior to our cruise. The money will be on our accounts and we will only need to go cash out whatever is left over on the last night. We won't be carrying any cash onto the ship, other than whatever money we would normally have in our wallets.

I would love to purchase credit precruise. I looked on RC website but I cant find the link to purchase. Could you point me to the right link? Thank you so much!

I set up a cash account for my last cruise. The only trouble I had with it was keeping track of my balance. I had to stand in line at guest services to verify my balance. Thankfully, the reps at the desk moved very quickly.

I would do it again.

I always set up my account with a credit card but usually bring enough cash to pay our account. What I do is on day one usually put a couple of hundred dollars on the account, then every so often when there is no long lines I stop by and put some more on the account. That way my account balance stays low plus I get a print out of our account for a briefer period of time and can see the charges for a shorter period of time- When we leave there is sometimes a small balance applied to our card-works for us

But WHY does anyone do a Cash account? After many many cruises, never had a problem using a credit card, except for two times, and they were easily identified and solved on the last two days of the cruise.

I hate standing in line PERIOD

I'm with you. As I see it, two possibilities exist:

Using a credit card, you MIGHT have a problem and MIGHT have to stand in line to correct it later.

Vs.

Using a cash account, you DEFINITELY have to stand in line to open the account and then to close it out on the last night.

Not DEFINITELY at all. You can choose cash account during online check in. Your seapass is available for immediate use and as long as you dont go over 500.00 you are ok. There is no need to rush to Guest services and put a deposit down right when you board. If you go over 500.00, they will ask you to come pay it down. I do this every cruise and Ive yet to see these long lines you all talk about on the last night when I settle my account. I guess I go really late and am just lucky.
