Kiwi Kruzer Posted February 19, 2016 #1 Share Posted February 19, 2016 (edited) Tonga and Fiji are now in the path of category four Tropical Cyclone Winston after the storm did a u-turn . Are there any cruise ships up that way at the moment, or are any due to head up that way? Edited February 19, 2016 by Kiwi Kruzer
Opua Kiwi Posted February 19, 2016 #2 Share Posted February 19, 2016 Queen Victoria. Hawaii - Apia - Auckland. They missed Apia due weather. They are roughly north east of Vava'u , but have diverted well to the east of Winston. They had N'west winds about 30kts this morning. They are due in to Akl on Tues. NSWP Posted February 19, 2016 #3 Share Posted February 19, 2016 Just had a peek at QV on bridgecam, a bit choppy out there. The Vista class ships are not too bad in the big seas though, not too high in the water.
Opua Kiwi Posted February 19, 2016 #4 Share Posted February 19, 2016 Looks as though they will track to the east of Niue. This is quite a way east of the direct Apia - Akl track. Having a day in hand due to missing Apia means hopefully Akl arrival won't be adversely affected.
sweetp12 Posted February 19, 2016 #5 Share Posted February 19, 2016 We are on P & O to fiji leaving on Monday, due to get there Thursday. We got an email today to say they are keeping an eye on the situation and may change our port etc depending on how things develop. I am curious as to where they will take us if we do get diverted and happy we have the sea legs already packed!

It depends on which way Winston decides to go!!, but at the moment the only thing the weather forecasters do know that Fiji is going to get hit!. I was going to say the same thing - bit worried about rough seas, but off to buy some Avomine today and already have the anti nausea pills for the carry on. Kiwi Kruzer Posted February 19, 2016 Author #9 Share Posted February 19, 2016 Just heard on the midday news that Suva missed a direct hit. Winston is now category 5 and is reported to have winds of 220 ks and gusts of up to 310.... Oh boy .....you would not want to be anywhere near that:eek:
Oz_Steve Posted February 19, 2016 #10 Share Posted February 19, 2016 Looks like it will be about 90 kms north of Suva. Vanua Levu is in the path especially Savu Savu. Appears that it will track to the north of Viti Levu and be in the Mamanuca and Yasawa region. Nadi/Denarau/Lautoka may get a rough ride as well. Opua Kiwi Posted February 19, 2016 #13 Share Posted February 19, 2016 (edited) The central pressure is estimated at 920 mb ! Hopefully Aus & NZ have the military on standby to help get aid in to Savusavu areas as soon as it's requested. For info Steve: Nausori airport is forecasting periods of Sth East 50kt gust 65kt between 3pm today and 3 am tomorrow (local time) Then shifting slightly east reducing to 35kt G 50. Izabelle Posted February 20, 2016 #15 Share Posted February 20, 2016 Heading out on Wednesday on Dawn Princess with 4 ports in Fiji, I'm really hoping Cyclone Winston doesn't cause to much damage to Fiji and surrounding areas.
Kiwi Kruzer Posted February 20, 2016 Author #16 Share Posted February 20, 2016 We are on watch in NZ as well. The storm is so ferocious and unpredictable that it could change course and head south to NZ. Hopefully the big high over the Tasman will chase it away...

Oz_Steve Posted February 20, 2016 #20 Share Posted February 20, 2016 Ok as far as I know it crossed the coast just Sth of Raki Raki and is currently near Nadi/Lautoka. It is then predicted to be in the Mamanuca/Yasawas for a while.

lagoon380 Posted February 20, 2016 #24 Share Posted February 20, 2016 It doesn't look good, a direct hit on the main island especially Nadi & Port Denarau. We are on the Carnival Legend in March 20 & 21 Suva & Port Denarau not sure if that will still go ahead or not. Hoping everyone in Fiji comes through this unscathed. The seas are quite big 4 metres but so Far not much wind! Boat is rocking a bit tho! Thanks Dramamine for keeping the voms at bay! Thoughts are with Fiji! Hope the storm fizzles out and no one gets hurt or worse!
