Wonderful Copenhagen 2016 edition

Recommended Posts

Dear Danish Viking;

I hope that you are feeling better. Please take time to rest and take care of yourself. Thanks again for helping us to discover your beautiful Copenhagen.

We are arriving by cruiseship at Ocenakaj on Fiday morning. The ship will stay overnight and we only have to get off on Saturday morning. We plan to taake the taxi on Saturday to go to our hotel , The Square, and then take the taxi again early Sunday morning to go to CHP.

I have a few question concerning the public transport:

1/ I tried to get a City pass for 24 hours and the agent told me that if my cell phone is not turn on while I am in Copenhagen, they will not accept this, even if I have the email receipt to prove that I bought it.

Is it true?

2/ Can I buy the City Pass at the Town Shop at Oceankaj?

Or they only sell zone tickets?

3/ Where is the Town Shop exactly at the port? Will there be a sign so we cna find it easily?

4/ I the Town Shop doesn't sell the City Pass, I plan to pay for the bus with some DKK I have ( 24 DKK for one person ?) and get the pass at Osterport. Is it available here?

5/ My daughter is 17, does she pay the adult fare on public transport?

6/ What time should we leave the hotel by taxi to go to the airport on Sunday if our flight is to Paris at 9:50 AM. I saw that you mentioned that there is an increase in the number of tourists this summer at CPH. Is 7:00 AM enough time?

Excuse me for asking a lot of questions, I like to plan and be prepared :-)

Thanks

You will get your ticket on a text message so no data is needed but you need to show the text message with your ticket so you need you mobile phone to be charged.

I´m not sure if the town ship sells the city pass so I wont count on it.

The town shop is located next to the bus stops and parking lot.

Crowne Plaza is located in Ørestad so its a few kilometers west from the airport.

But to answer your question, I have never heard about the Ho/Ho bus going out to Ørestad but with 3 large hotels (and the one expanding) in the area its no surprise if the tour companies sees a business out there.

Have you checked their websites?

Just a heads up for you guys using the airport after your cruise.

The airport is currently seeing record number of passengers with days with over 100.000 passengers, thats the first time ever.

This means that the wait in security can be some minutes longer than usual but its nothing like those horror stories i hear from american airports.

So just be prepared to arrive some 20 minutes or so before you had planned to arrive.

The airport opened 2 extra lanes just before this summer and is as we speak building out the security area so next summer there will be 24 lanes in the security with 20 this summer.

The area infront of security will be doubled in size so the area won't be so crowded.

In the passport check for non schengen flights in pier C they have put those automatic passport scanners in use so now there is more options there as well.

We flew out on 28 June, for some reason we had got there early. It was chaotic to say the least. Huge lineup for security, not complaining, I want everyone's luggage checked, at least 30 minutes to get through.

Passports control wouldn't accept our chip passports, only about 10 operators working. The Line was so long, people had to be taken out and escorted through to the gates so they would not miss their flight. We waited in line for at least 50 minutes. There was no organisation or barriers to separate lines, so people kept cutting in, passport control rage.

When we finally were cleared we had a very very very long walk to the furtherest gate, no travellators.

Maybe it was a bad day, but do allow yourself lots of time to get through. Our plane too off 10 min late and with lots of empty seats - passengers still in line?

Hi Danish Viking,

Thank you for all the helpful information. We are arriving on a Friday afternoon and sailing Saturday 5pm. Could you help with the following questions?

- We would like to see the changing of the guards. Is there anyway to know which ceremony it will be ahead of time, or only by checking the flag the day of?

- The ceremony starts at noon, but we would also like to catch lunch at b. Do you know if food stalls open before noon on Saturday? If we have to do it after the ceremony, do you think there is enough time to eat there and catch a taxi from our hotel (Cabinn near Forum) to the cruise terminal (need to be at dock by 2:30?)?

- Finally, after the cruise, I've seen some review early this season about long taxi lineups. I know you posted an article about improvements where the port calls the taxi companies of ship arrivals. Any feedback if taxi lines are still long?

Thanks again for all your help. Looking forward to visiting your wonderful city.

I was out at Oceankaj yesterday to see the Disney cruise ship and there seemed to be a steady flow of taxi's to all 3 ships but the traffic was a little bit slow around the traffic lights.

The 2 other questions I have a hard time figurens out.

You don't provide a date for your visit but on kongehuset.dk there is a calendar so you can see if the Queen is at home because if she is the changing of the guard will be a little bit bigger than normal.

The food stalls, are they at Torvehallerne or Copenhagen Street Food?

Is B a restaurant or a place, perhaps Formel B.

I looked at Strömma, Red Blue and City Sightseeing and none of them had a stop out there on the maps.

I know that none of the companies have it on their maps or websites, but the Crowne Plaza told me that there is one stop in the early morning to pick up hotel guests. We saw the bus when we were there in 2014, too. I sent the hotel an email on this subject, but they haven't replied. I'll send another email today.

Thank you.

Hi Danish Viking,

My apologies for the typo in my question. Regarding the food stalls, I meant to ask about the ones at Torvehallerne. I was wondering if its feasible to do Amalienborg-->Torvehallerne-->Forum-->Oceankej all in about 2-3 hours? If the food stalls are open before noon, then we can eat beforehand.

Our cruise is on NCL Star on Aug 26. Thanks for the link to calendar, I'll keep watching there to see if the Queen will be home.

Thanks again for all your help. Much appreciated :)

Hi

I was planning on using the cruise line's shuttle to the airport but didnt realize that flights must leave after 12:30...our flight leaves at 12:20. What is the best way to get to the airport? private car? taxi? husband keeps telling me that lines for taxi's are crazy. Any ideas would be helpful. Thank you

Just tell them your flight leaves after 12:30. We told Celebrity our flight was at noon rather than 11:40 so we could take a slightly later shuttle in Amsterdam.

What about first going for a taxi and if that doesn't plan out then take the 25 or 27 bus.

I do realize that after noon is probably not the best time to judge the taxi situation but from what i saw there was plenty of taxi's and lets of place in the busses.

Yes the situation is different in the morning but the taxi companies and the port has a system where the port tell when they need taxi's.

And from what i understand is that it works but the number of ships and if it its a weekday or weekend does have an effekt on traffic so tell me what day it is and i can look up how many ships there are at the cruise terminal.

If you need something to drink then you can get a Coca Cola/Pepsi/bottled water for 15-20 kroner.

A cop of coffee is probably the same and probably double up if you visit a café.

A hot dog will probably be around 25-30 kroner.

A sandwich or bagel is 40-50 kroner.

If you go to a restaurant then expect to pay from 200-300 kroner for a decent meal.

There are some cheap buffets on and near Strøget where you can get all you can eat for around 100 kroner but the quality is so so.

Hi. We will be in copenhagen on Sep 1st from 9:30 to 6:30. the ship is supposed to dock at LANGELINIEKAJ. I've signed up for a free walking tour from City hall starting at 11AM. It looks like it will take about 40 minutes to walk or 20 minutes on the bus. I'm wondering if anyone has suggestions on anything to see or do on the way to City Hall. I'd hate to waste the time if we are only in copenhagen for 1 day. Thanks in advance. Greatly appreciate all of the valuable information provided!! :):)

Rosenborg castle - absolutely loved it, so eccentric compared to most staid european palaces and the crown jewels are magnificent, and it has the original tapestries.

Otherwise do that later as may not be enough time and you can do round tower for views of the city. Also venture inside the town hall.

That's exactly what I originally thought but didn't think we'd have enough time. How long do most people spend there?

1. Get a copy of Rick Steves' Northern European Cruiseports. There's a good self-guided walking tour that you could do portions of on your way from the dock to the Radplasen where the Free Walking Tours begin. We did the Copenhagen Free Walking Tour last summer and the tour in the Rick Steves book. There was little, if any, overlap.

2. The Rick Steves book also has a great tour of Rosenborg Castle which comes in handy because there are not many explanatory signs in the castle. I did the Rick Steves tour last summer and spent nearly 2 hours in the castle and another 45 minutes or so walking around the gardens.

I am hoping to drop off our luggage as early as possible, then go back and visit Rosenborg before checking in. 3:30 is the latest check-in time. Check in begins at 11:30

Does anyone have previous experience with how early they were able to drop off bags at Oceankaj?

We are with Royal Caribbean, although I don't know if that matters since port employees take the luggage in most ports.

This is good to know :D We will be doing the Free Walking tour, and a canal tour, but we also have the Rick Steves book.
