Smoking

Recommended Posts

I have been freaked out by the largely American other boards. I have only cruised once, on the Carnival Legend out of Australia and then only to New Zealand. Smoking is restricted to limited areas which is exactly what I had expected. Now on other boards on this forum I am reading about smoking in lots of areas of the ship - casinos, bars, balconies.

Is my experience on the Carnival Legend typical of ships sailing from Australia? Or do some have more regressive smoking policies?

Sorry all, i just did what I should have done before I asked, I've checked the FAQ on Celebrity. I was pleased to read that their policy is:

For your comfort and enjoyment, our ships are designated as non-smoking; however, we recognize that some of our guests smoke. Therefore, cigarette, cigar and pipe smoking is permitted in designated outdoor areas of the ship. Smoking is not permitted in any dining venue, casino, theater, lounge, hallway, elevator, or corridor. This policy includes smoking-like products such as electronic cigarettes. Smoking is not permitted inside any stateroom, nor on any stateroom veranda. If you are in violation of this policy, a cleaning fee of $250 USD will be applied to your SeaPass® account and you may be subject to further action pursuant to the "Consequences Section" of the Guest Conduct Policy. Cigarettes, cigars and pipe tobacco must be properly disposed of and never thrown overboard. You must be at least 18 years of age to purchase, possess or use tobacco onboard.

Additionally, there is a non-smoking policy on all components of the land tour portion of all Celebrity Cruises Cruisetour products. We appreciate your understanding and adherence.

Both Celebrity, Princess and RCI have no smoking on balconies, and designated smoking areas. It's usually not a problem to avoid those areas, except for the smoking area on the Promenade deck of some ships if you're walking laps.

On Solstice the only time we noticed any smokers was when we went up to the Lawn Club - one side of that is a smoking zone.

i found this about Holland Americas smoking policy

Holland America

All showrooms and dining areas on Holland America's vessels are non-smoking. Designated smoking and non-smoking areas are available in most lounges. Cigar and pipe smoking is permitted on the outside decks only. Smoking in passenger staterooms is prohibited. Smoking is permitted on stateroom verandahs. Electronic cigarettes are permitted in staterooms and in designated smoking areas but not in other public areas of the ship.

Quote from HAL Website

"Is Smoking Allowed On Board?

For the comfort of all of our guests, all staterooms (cabins), showrooms and most other indoor areas are designated non-smoking. While smoking is not permitted in staterooms, guests are allowed to smoke on stateroom verandahs. Smoking is also permitted on certain other designated, outside decks. The designated smoking areas for all ships are as follows unless otherwise noted:

Stateroom verandahs

Sea View Bar (not available on ms Rotterdam and ms Veendam)

Outside Decks

Sports Deck

Observation Deck (ms Prinsendam, ms Eurodam, ms Nieuw Amsterdam, ms Noordam, ms Oosterdam, ms Westerdam, and ms Zuiderdam only)

Casino

Active players only, when the casino is open

Designated slot machines only

Each sailing will offer one or more non-smoking nights depending upon the length of the voyage

Cigar and pipe smoking is not allowed anywhere inside the ship; it is only permitted on the outside decks where smoking is otherwise allowed and on stateroom verandahs. Electronic cigarettes are permitted in staterooms but not in other public areas of the ship other than on outside decks designated as smoking areas.

Any guest who smokes inside staterooms in violation of our policy will be charged a US$250 cleaning fee per day of violation.

Holland America Line reserves the right at any time to modify the smoking policy onboard or alter the locations where smoking is permissible."

Thanks. Designated smoking areas in lounges doesn't sound too good on HAL. Good information about the lawn areas on Celebrity, we will be prepared for it and check out the smokers area when we are picking a place to sit.

It's on the port side.

We've done two HAL cruises and never had a problem (and we hate cigarette smoke). Didn't notice any smoking in ther casinos or bars. We did have ocean view cabins. Most smokers these day seen to be respectful.

I think it may me more of a problem (for non smokers) on Asian and European cruises. Others may be able to confirm this.

We would cruise HAL again, its our second favourite line.

I suppose it all depends on the people on board as to how much smoke is around. When we lived in Europe for several years we always took a couple of weeks to acclimatise back to smoking being more prevalent when we came back from an Australian trip. I've just been back in Australia for a while and have got used to smoke free air in most places.

During a recent trip to Melbourne I was quite irritated when I discovered that smoking is still permitted at outdoor seating areas in restaurants and cafes.

NSW have banned smoking within 4 metres of any restaurant.

 Remind me never to book a cruise on HAL. Smoking on verandahs and all outside decks?

During a cruise on the Noordam at the end of October, I counted 11 or 12 No Smoking signs at intervals around the Promenade Deck.

Swismiss. You need to understand that the smoking rules differ when the ships operate out of Australian waters. All ships must comply with Australian regulations when in Australian waters.

Ships sailing out of non Aussie ports seem to have a more relaxed smoking rule insofar that many do allow smoking in the Casino.

Although it is good to see that many also have stopped smoking on balconies in overseas sailings.

I just won't salon a line that permits smoking on the balcony, that simple really.

Unfortunately NCL allows smoking in casinos and various outdoor areas.

If NCL ever gets to Australia they will have to follow the Australian laws also. Handy to know for those booking trips overseas. :)

Sorry all, i just did what I should have done before I asked, I've checked the FAQ on Celebrity.

Celebrity have long had the best anti-smoking policy. As others have said there is little to worry about with any ship in Australian waters but overseas it can be different. Nothing to worry about when cruising with Celebrity however no matter where in the world you are.

Current Australian laws? That is a good question as the laws are being changed to be more strict and that can differ from state to state, as well as federal.

I agree, minimum no smoking indoors, and they are working on any area that has food consumption, outdoors included. Also there is some changes as to the distance from an entrance to a building. So some of the poolside areas that area currently allocated smoking may be unavailable as the laws progressively change.

I honestly do not know the exact details, as I am not in an industry that needs to know the exact law.

I totally understand the fairness of smokers needing a decent space to have a smoke, which is still a legal activity let's face it.

HAL have the leat restrictive smoking policies as far as I can find.

Is tha a Goid thing or a bad thing, only you can decide.

It's a deal breaker for me. I would book a cruise with HAL if it wasn't for their smoking policy, however they are catering more for the European market than Aus/NZ.
