Cruisers beware

No sympathy; you picked the room (or agreed to be placed there). Do you not know how to read a deck plan? Obstructed OVs have lifeboats right outside, and those can make a lot of noise. It's a freaking cruise ship. Frankly, I would settle for a room with a whistling noise any day rather than sitting at home. How entitled of you to complain, and how excessively generous NCL was to move you. And you're still talking about this years later?

LOL....I picked it, but the description didn't include someone would be testing those life jacket whistles on the life boats.

The noise wasn't really that bad. It just annoyed DH and housekeeping/engineers didn't know where it came from. We thought something was opened that they could close. They offered to move us; we didn't ask. They were also supposed to give us a bottle of champagne which never came. Now that's something to complain about.

ETA: On my original post here....when I said "complained"...it wasn't in the sense of "what a horrible cruise and awful cabin". It was more like "mentioned the noise and what to do to fix it". DH is very handy. He would have done it himself if he could have figured out the source.

The OP is a platinum cruiser who should know better than to accept any cabin even if it was free. Newbies make this mistake every day and get no compensation. We all learn. I learned through reading this site, others had it the hard way. Still I would love a free cruise.

All of our 14 NCL cruises have been booked thru CAS, either with a voucher or directly. With the voucher (from land based casino) we pay approx. $1000- for 2 with the "free" beverage package. It's never totally "free". You do get to pick your room, or at least discuss it with the agent. CAS doesn't get or give out bad/poor rooms--(unless ship is booked ) Most times they pick the best available room for you. On our last trip on the Star - CAS booking - the agent told us to take a specific balcony room and promised we would be happy with it. As we were unfamiliar with the ship, we took his word and booked the cabin. We looked the cabin up, and it was great!! There are a few regular balconies placed in between suites, so our balcony was suite size. The hallway curves in, so the room is a regular size balcony, but the balcony itself was larger. We didn't know about this room - it was all the agent. We have never been disappointed by cabin suggested by CAS. OP probably would of been better if they let CAS pick the cabin. Reimbursement to the OP was great, and I'm proud of NCL for addressing the situation.

Safe sailing

CruiseDeckPlans.com has a little yellow star over your room - "Underneath pool area and buffet. There may be noise from above."

Confirmed!

I hate to say this.
But, you were treated better than most.
I have had a couple NCL disasters and they never offered me a soda never mind a 200 OBC.
And I am a frequent NCL cruiser.
6 months ago NCL star...spent 2 days of a 7 day cruise in a balcony...looking at the parking lot with all facilities closed onboard.
2 months ago NCL spirit..had a bag with tons of expensive clothes stolen and throw overboard...
they gave me not 10 cents.
not even an extra ships pin.
lol

Yikes! What was the Star problem?
No, we chose the cabin... unaware of what is above...lesson learned! Compensation was small, and CAS stated that NCL was the responsible party...everyone passed the buck. Thanks for your condolences :)
Deck plans are readily available online - just saying.
I think many folks are missing the point. If the cabin was as noisy and terrible as the op described, ncl knows it, probably has had numerous complaints, yet still places unsuspecting cruisers in that room.

what do you expect ncl to do with the cabin.......close it permanently or make it a deaf only cabin......

Give the room occupants free & unlimited access to the Garden Cafe. Edited by TheDougOut

We'll be nearby, but in an outside cabin on the fringe of the garden buffet seating area. If we hear noise, it'll be our cue that we're missing something. Like bacon. I call that a feature.
Great site you refer to here. DH and I booked on another line, and have been wondering if the cabin we picked had any issues. According to CruiseDeckplans.com, our cabin has no known issues. Woohoo! We didn't think it did, but it can be hard choosing a good cabin on an unfamiliar ship. A lot of times there are large blank areas that have no indication of what's there (Galley area? Crew area? Housekeeping or storage area?) From now on we will be looking at 2 deck plans when we book - from the ships website, and also the one at CruiseDeckPlans.com. Cheers!
Cruise of Jan 2016 on the Norwegian Dawn.
PROS: Easy on and off ship. Easy parking at the port. I am sure there were more but I was too sleep deprived to enjoy much that the cruise had to offer.
CONS: Our cabin was under the galley (unknown to us at time of reservation) ... had no idea that the noise level would be so bad. It was impossible to sleep. They finally moved us after 4 nights of sleeplessness. The on-board guest relations gave us one free specialty meal and a bottle of wine and 200.00 reimbursement. Note- we already had the specialty meal package, so what good was that?
After arriving at home I phoned NCL's guest relations department.... was told (after an unbelievable amount of time on hold) to send them an email. I did and received an email back stating they would be in touch after 15 business days...HA! That was Feb 10... forward to today March 31...no response, so I again held a phone line for 50 minutes...just to be told they would NOT be giving anymore reimbursement. ( I only asked for partial reimbursement for the time I was sleep deprived).
This was a Harrah's Casino at Sea cruise, so therefore I felt I was not a valued guest to NCL and they referred me to Casino At Sea customer service. Again this proved a useless effort... another long phone hold. At least I found out from the Casinos At Sea rep that NCL passes the buck because no one takes responsibility for the customer.
Found plastic in my dessert at the Brazilian Steak restaurant. Cabin was worn and some lights did not work.
And I am a Latitudes member which carries no weight either..... You have been warned... consider another cruise line.
Thanks for posting your experience, but I do think that you were taken care of in a very good way.
After a free meal, a bottle of wine and $200 reimbursement, what else were you looking for? A pound of flesh? If that is not greed what is!
A logical person would insulate the cabin to deaden the noise. Hope this clears up your confusion.
considering the age of the ship and that hasn't been done yet one has to assume they are not going to. so again, what's left....
Just my 2 cents, but I think some folks have missed what caused the bigger issue here. The OP stated:

"The on-board guest relations gave us one free specialty meal and a bottle of wine and 200.00 reimbursement."

So...compensation was offered and accepted. As they say, you only get one bite at the apple. Since the OP accepted this compensation, the shoreside folks were correct in denying further compensation. If you are ever offered compensation and do not feel that it is sufficient, do NOT accept it...only accept what you feel is sufficient.
This is the perfect response.

I doubt it is a problem to every single occupant.

I know I pack earplugs and my ipod and headphones every time I travel. I research to tge max.

Many people are heavy sleepers. Or others party and crash. Doubt it is a problem to them.

Seriously-always look at the deck plan or ask at time of reservation! I don't think its anyone's fault -if they had chosen the cabin for you its one thing but if not its your responsibility to do your homework! Glad there was an empty cabin to move you to! I think they compensated you very nicely IMHO Edited by boopsahoy
