Best Bug Spray for Zika?

Recommended Posts

We used Deep Woods Off when we were at Iguazu Falls in Brazil in March. We had the pump spray bottle and the wipes. (No aerosol spray as not allowed to have aerosol in check in luggage on flights.)

Worked great - no bites.

And if you are using mosquito repellent DON'T wear cologne, aftershave... ps...careful with suntan lotions and oils. there are perfumes in those which the mosquitos like. if using suntan products, spray repellent after.

We use a product with 25% deet. It was put to the test one drizzling day in Belize when we went to some ruins. There were swarms of mosquitos everywhere and we only got one bite. We sprayed it on exposed skin and over our clothes. The bite was on my face because I didn't put any on my face. Lesson learned. Spray into your hand and apply to face. That stuff really works! We saw others get back on the bus with dozens of bites. Of course scrub it all off as soon as you return to the ship. And be sure and not eat anything with contaminated deet hands. The risk of using deet is less then Zika at this point.

This is the only time we have seen swarms of mosquitos on any cruise ( and we have done about 30 all over the Caribbean). If you go into jungle type excursions you will see more.

We used a Sawyer product to spray clothes that we wore on excursions. This was recommended by an acquaintance who travels to African countries frequently. She recommended that we even spray shoes and socks. Once sprayed, clothes can be laundered several times before having to respray.
