Cash for 7 Day Cruise

Recommended Posts

I know this is a relative question - but for a 7 day cruise how much cash do you generally take. Considering things from start to finish. Cab tips to and from port, tipping on board, tipping excursion guides, etc..... We are not shoppers while in port and if we do they would have to take plastic.

I usually take around $500. Just for all the extra things you mentioned. I'll sometimes play some Blackjack in the casino ($100 max) and give that extra tip to a server or bartender for going above and beyond. If I come home with some money it goes back in the bank.

$200 in small bills, and it's used strictly for small things, like tips at hotels, cab rides, cheap souvenirs ashore, etc. Otherwise everything else is charged to a credit card.

I like to have about 2000 with us. $200 in small bills for shopping, taxis and tips and the rest 100s. That way the wallet isn't too fat. We use the card for everything we can but i don't like to chance not having the cash with us if any places don't take cards.

We take about $1500...better to have more than you need! You can always put it back in the bank if you don't need it!

Your daily tips will be billed to your shipboard account, so you don't have to dole out cash for that. Same with drinks...it's added to your tab.

The only tips you might need would be room service delivery, porters, cabs....the rest goes on your account. I'm assuming, like most, your final bill will be on a CC.....

Don't bring wads of small bills....too bulky. The ship will break down larger denominations for you!

Not all the shops in ports will take plastic. Many do, but some mom-and-pop shops might not. And, seems to me, those are the more interesting ones.

I always worry too much to use my card in port. I normally use cash for that. We don't spend a ton on a cruise. I usually will google cab fares and such so I have an idea about that but basically I take about $300 in cash. All of my shipboard charges go on my credit card. However, I normally buy some Carnival Gift Cards at 10% off and apply them. My husband and I will have a couple drinks/day but my choice is wine and I bring on 2 bottles. We like a good coffee from the coffee shop each morning. We might buy a picture, eat at the steakhouse one night. All together we normally spend about $300 on the ship for the two of us.

We usually take about 1000 for our family of 4. Most times we put the cash on our Acct so the cc bill is not so high at the end. Mostly the cash is just a safeguard, but we do tip in cash for all the cruise workers like room steward and dining staff. Pictures and drinks go on the card, gambling is usually with cash. We do not use our cards while in port unless we are paying for an excursion, shopping is handled with cash.

Most times we end up spending about 500-600 for the week of that 1000.

As you see from the posts, the amount varies greatly from person to person, depending on personal habits. The amount should be adjusted not according to length of cruise but by number of ports, as you will not be spending any cash on sea days. We don't do any major shopping in ports and rarely eat meals in port, so we take very little cash. At each port, we take one credit card and $50 or less, and rarely use much of that. A couple of hundred dollars cash is usually enough ($50 of that is in ones, which we use to tip porters, room service , buy small trinkets, etc.). I don't like having large amounts of cash. If you find yourself short, you can get cash from your account by loading to your card in the casino and cashing out.

My last 7 day bill was $700ish for me, hubby, and toddler. About a third of that was cash in port as we do local, non-carnival excursions.

I do this as well. I usually end up bringing about half back and sticking it into the bank for any credit card charges I made, but it is nice to have the cash on hand if needed.

same here -- Also we don't always do cruise ship excursions, so some of the places we go, only take cash -- (ie; Costa Maya)

I really depends on how I am paying for shore excursions. If I am paying cash, then obviously more. As a general rule $500 for misc. expenses is more than enough for the 4 of us; we are not shoppers and charge as much as we can, like restaurants and hotels. And then on board ship, everything goes on S&S to be paid off once home.
