Liberty in Jan.

Recommended Posts

How is the weather in Texas in Jan. Will we be able to use the pools on embarkation day? How about day 1 at sea? Any recommendations?

Obviously, weather can vary, but we've done cruises out of Gaveston twice in January, and both times it was too cool for us to use the pool on the first and last day.

While it tends to be pleasant temperatures compared to Ohio in January, it will not likely be shorts and tank top weather in Galveston. First and last sea days are big hot tub days. Liberty has 2 very large cantilevered hot tubs in the Solarium, great for those cooler sailing days.

You can count on temps to be in the 20-90 degree range.... You can never tell. I have had February cruises out of Galveston where the pool got a lot of use on day 1, but that's not the norm, and I'd expect at least light jacket weather in January. Always seems decent by day 2 though.

Hi,

We are new to crusing and this will be our first time cruising the Carribean. We will be with our two girls, and it will be their first time on a cruise, so they are super excited. We will be cruising on Liberty in early January. Will it be warm and swimming weather as we get closer to Cozumel and Belize etc? We are from New Zealand so are not quite sure of the weather/temps etc in that part of the world. Will it be warm enough to swim on the cruise and at beaches?

Thanks for any info.

We sailed out of Galveston in Feb 2015. The first and last sea days were in the 60s and not good swimming days, but the rest of the days were fine! I don't think January would be much different on average?

Pretty much same thing in January. Maybe the first and last day and a half will be cool.

Average highs in both locations is low 80's fahrenheit in January. Cloud cover seems to make a larger difference in "feels like" temperature in January. Maybe because there is less hours of sunlight to warm things up.

We sailed out of Galveston in February-the temperature was fairly warm/humid on boarding day (I had a sundress on and a light jacket at night) the bigger issue was fog for us, and it can be a problem in the winter months. The ship was delayed getting in and we didn't even board until after 7pm. They had us go directly to the dining room and just sat people wherever they could since nothing was ready to go due to the late arrival. And then it was VERY creepy walking around the ship on the pool deck and not being able to see more than a few feet in front of you due to the dense fog. This was Carnival by the way, although the fog doesn't care which cruise line you sail :p

The way back it was "freezing" for the last 2 days (in comparison to Chicago in the winter, not so much. But we couldn't sit out on our balcony with out shivering!) It was only about 50 degrees when we got back to Galveston, but no fog!

Thanks for your replies. So pretty much it will be cool when leaving Galveston and arriving back, and then warm when at other ports. Would be great to have some beach weather. Is the pool deck warm when crusing to these ports? Or is it quite windy?

Thanks for your help.:)

Typically the pool deck is warm after the first sea day, unless it is unusually cool. I have had one cruise that time of year that was on the cool side (think low to mid 70's in Cozumel). Normally it is pleasantly tropical once you are about a day out of Galveston.

We sailed on Navigator at the beginning of January and the weather was warm. The biggest issue was fog. We stayed in Galveston one night before the cruise and drove around the town to see the tree sculptures on people's lawns which was very interesting. In the evening, we decided to go to a movie after dinner. We drove past the cinema several times. We just couldn't see it in the thick fog.

We were lucky that the fog had cleared enough for us to leave Galveston on time but when we returned we couldn't dock until around 2 pm. It wasn't an issue for us, fortunately, as we were spending the night in Houston before flying home. Many others had to change their flights and RCL staff were very helpful. We also had an extra "boarding day" lunch in the Windjammer. The passengers on the next cruise were given food vouchers for lunch in Galveston.

Can anyone tell me how the weather/port are in late October?? Is fog still a big issue in the Fall?? Halloween time frame??

Fog is most prevalent in Galveston between October and April.

You are leaving New Zealand during your summer to visit during our winter. The Caribbean will be warm, the mainland may not be quite as warm. Cozumel is windy sometimes, but Belize and Roatan should be warm. Fog durint the winter is an issue in Texas sometimes. Weather is always unpredictable in the long term. :)

Thanks for any info.

Late October is often late summer in south Texas. My children had to wear long sleeves for Halloween one time.

That's funny Beth.:D Sometimes here in California, the children actually have to wear coats or jackets for Halloween. :D

Maybe in Northern California. In Southern California it is shorts and flip-flops weather. :)
