The buffet was just fine for my tastes but DH found the variety lacking. No burgers or hot dogs; for those you need to go out to the pool grill. I enjoyed my salad and chicken very much though. :)

..

The aft section of the buffet had different menu's each day in 2013, including burgers if I recall correctly. We enjoyed that part of the buffet the most, made to order sandwiches, all kinds of stuff. Might be worth a try for your husband!

edit: I am late to the party.. :)

You're confusing the M-Class with the S-Class. Mast Grill on S-Class, and Pool Grill on M-Class. Since this thread is about Summit, an M-Class ship, smoking only on Deck 4, port side, Pool Deck, port side, and Mast Bar, port side. That's it.

Thanks Wine-O, I saw Mast Bar and assumed there was also a Mast Grill but couldn't find it on the deck plans. Does the Pool Grill have the same hamburger/hot dog type of fare?

There is a brand new store which just had its grand opening in Kings Wharf. It is a branch of Diamonds International.

Hmm, DH just had a hip replacement in Feb. (and has the next one scheduled the week after we get back) and just said the other day, "How can I thank you for taking such good care of me?" :D:D:D

Regarding comments about "Chic" night. It used to called "Formal" night. That's when cruising was a bit classier. If you can't wear a formal outfit, at least wear dress pants instead of jeans.

Once jeans become the norm, shorts will follow. Let's try to respect the attempt at keeping some class in cruising.

Cruises on cruise lines like Celebrity are a vacation. The class pretense is nonsense.

Evening Chic is great. You can wear a nice dress shirt, no tie. You can wear a sports jacket. You can wear a suit. You can wear a tux. You can wear designer jeans. Saw all that a few weeks ago and it allowed people to be themselves.

Thanks for all your tips on avoiding the Bayonne Bridge. Two GPS's (maps on my iPhone, and DH's Garmin) sent us that route every time we have driven to this port. The only reason we ended up taking the Goethals Bridge this time, was because we ended up turned around and far out of our way, when the detour signs got us confused. And yes we ended up using Waze, and will always use that going forward. Hopefully next trip here will be easier, thanks to everyone's suggestions. :)

Anyway, the live music on this ship has been fantastic. The piano player/singer is the best we've ever heard on any sailing. And, there is a string duo, two women who play cello and violin, and they are incredible. The music is so beautiful and tranquil, and it is not so loud that you can't hear each other talk. Those two women are extremely talented. There is a female singer in one of the lounges and she is very good also. Highly trained professionals on this ship; not an amateur among them. Celebrity tends to have high quality talent on its ships in our experience. Much better than RCI as we've seen it.

We don't smoke but we have noticed that smoking is almost nil on this ship. In the past people could smoke on their balconies, I forget if it was port or starboard as recently as a couple of years ago, and we always ended up with smokers on either sides, and one time with a neighbor who smoked cigars out there every day. We never complained though as it was their right to smoke on their balconies at that time. As far as we can tell, smoking is only allowed on Summit in very limited areas outside on deck now. There is no indoor smoking including in the casino. Last year we were on Grandeur of the Seas (RCI) and just walking through the casino to get to the other end of the ship nearly required a gas mask due to the heavy smoke in there.

We noticed a lot of passengers lighting up as soon as they got off Summit in Bermuda. Also people were smoking at Horseshoe Bay, so I guess that's allowed, though a lot of US beaches no longer permit smoking.

Our cabin steward has been fantastic. He learned the first morning that we like to sleep in, and never bothered us after that. Even though we left the room in late morning, he had our room ready for us as soon as we got back from lunch. We asked for ice the first day and gave him a small cash tip, and he has provided us with fresh ice in the bucket twice daily ever since. :)

Even though our balcony does not have a lounger, I found a way to push the two chairs together, recline them, and make a lounger of my own, which worked perfectly. DH does not sunbathe, so he napped in the AC while I worked on my tan.

There is a brand new store which just had its grand opening in Kings Wharf. It is a branch of Diamonds International. It is just next to the little mall there. It is a LARGE store. We didn't buy anything there but it was very well staffed and had many beautiful (and presumably very expensive) pieces there. Hubby bought me a Pandora bracelet and five charms at the Crisson shop in the mall at Kings Wharf, and the young female clerk there could not have been more helpful, patient and pleasant. :) It was a lovely experience buying at that store. (Anniversary gift; next weekend is our wedding anniversary).

Today the sea is a bit choppy. It's cloudy and spitting rain with a very brisk wind. I like the motion but DH has taken to the bed. I'm going to go to the Everything You Ever Wanted To Know About Living on a Ship talk at 11 a.m., hosted by the Cruise Director Eddy, and a few other employees.

Packing up later this afternoon; how time flies! :( Already thinking of which cruise to take next.

Do you know the name of the guitar player? We have enjoyed Nestor on the Summit before and hope that he will be there in December.

Agreed , what others wear should not affect any others cruise, as long as guidelines are followed, wear what you want. It will probably be jeans

Hi, my DH and I are sailing on Celebrity Summit and just arrived in Bermuda this morning. Currently I am having trouble posting pics, but when I am able to I will. This is our third time on Summit. We like that she is a "smaller" ship. The service has been good for the most part, with a few glitches. Worst problem was while driving up, that the Bayonne Bridge was closed, and we had no idea until we were close to it (driving up from near Philadelphia). It might have been nice if the cruise line had posted a heads up on their web site or an email informing driving passengers of this issue. Yesterday we had a full day of rain, but hubby and I used the day as one of rest. We are in Aqua Class on deck 11. The cabin is rather small compared to what we are used to (usually book a Jr. Suite on Royal Caribbean). However, it is arranged with much attention to convenience, and there is room in it to store all our belongings. We have enjoyed dining in Blu, but the first night we ate at the Tuscan Grille and much preferred the food there. Last night we were unable to get a reservation there, so book early if you wish to eat there on this cruise! Also we have eaten most lunches in Bistro on Five, which is intimate and nice. Had lunch at the Oceanview Cafe today after exploring the shops at Kings Wharf. The buffet was just fine for my tastes but DH found the variety lacking. No burgers or hot dogs; for those you need to go out to the pool grill. I enjoyed my salad and chicken very much though. :) Tonight we have a shore excursion planned: Harbour Nights in Hamilton. We have done this before and enjoyed it very much. Tomorrow our shore excursion will be to Horseshoe Bay beach, again one of our very favorites. We have been to BDA multiple times and love it here. Any questions about this cruise please ask and I will try to answer them the best I can.
Celebrity seems to have an ongoing problem with their directions to the ship. We sailed Aug 2014 , and the bridge was closed ,we had to detour , and nearly missed the sailing, we were the last two to board. I called Celebrity from the car asking if they could notify the ship and hold for us ,since it was their bad direction that caused the problem, nope, you are on your own. Complained to the front desk ,and we were told they were shocked ,and the directions would be fixed on the next sailing. Nice to be lied to

Their directions don't say to take the Bayonne Bridge coming up to the port from the south.

they open and close the bridge at the Authority's discretion/schedule/weather according to PANYNJ. 2 weeks ago, the site said it was closed, google directed me to Goethals and 78 and I later found out the Bayonne Bridge was in fact open that day.

I'm not familiar with driving up from Philly but I'm confused/curious as to why you would go through Staten Island and pay the toll on the Goethals rather than use 78?

We were on the same cruise coming up from Philly. No problem whatsoever. Just took the Jersey TPKE to 440. We were parked in the garage in less than two hours.

440 would bring you into Staten Island and to the Bayonne Bridge to get to the cruise port. Maybe the bridge happened to be open?

Does the ship always dock in the same direction in Bermuda? We have a port side balcony and I'm wondering if we'll have sun in the morning or afternoon?

When we were there, we docked to the starboard side. I see from LA_CA_GAL's thread that they were docked to the port side.

I asked the Staff Captain last year if there was any rime or reason to docking, he told me it depends on what side needs maintenance, i.e. putting boats in the water and maintenance on the davits.

Do not really know, but, here are the directions we followed and it was a snap:

Take the New Jersey Turnpike/I-95 North to Exit 14A - Bayonne. Follow directions above from Exit 14A.

Follow the signs for Route 440 South. Proceed 1 1/2 miles and make a left (Goldsborough Drive)

into the Bayonne Ocean Terminal. The cruise terminal is two miles straight ahead.

You are correct. For some reason I was thinking of 440 off the Turnpike at Exit 10 which would take you South to North.

I agree with you 100%. For us a big part of the Cruise vacation was the formal nights and dressing up. Dressing poorly is not limited to cruise ships look at the guests on airlines flying most look like they are going to beach or the garden shop at Home Depot. We stopped going on NCL and Carnival when they become so informal. Our last Carnival cruise on formal nights the table next to us thought formal was wearing a shirt with a collar and not wearing base ball cabs at dinner. Class or no class? Not sure I will wear a tux on my next cruise just seems weird in a tux with everyone else wearing jeans and polo shirts. We miss the "grand old days" of cruising "with class"!

Back home from our wonderful cruise, to celebrate our 33rd anniversary. Sorry we do not know the name of the live guitar player. I had not intended this thread to become some kind of forum to discuss whether or not to use the Bayonne Bridge. Forget I ever brought that up; I was just mentioning it was closed to be helpful in case anyone needed to travel that way to get to the ship. BTW, it was open when we came home on Sunday. Please don't tell me we drove the wrong way home, as we got home in record time. NO COMMENTS please on our route. In all our cruise was wonderful. The staff on Summit is incredibly friendly and helpful. Our luggage was right there when we got off the ship. We were on our way very quickly with the help of a very nice porter at the pier in Bayonne. Everything was wonderful on our cruise. The only things I would change are: I would not book an Aqua class cabin on deck 11 again on Summit. The room was smaller than we had thought, but this was no fault of the cruise line. We did enjoy eating at the restaurant, Blu. The food on the ship overall was not to our tastes, except for in the Tuscan Grille. But again, personal preferences. We had a glorious time in port, during all three days. We really enjoyed the staff on board who went out of their way the entire cruise to make sure everyone was happy. We do love the Summit! Hope to sail on her again sometime. :)

Thanks for all the great info about the Summit-- I'll be on the Jul 10th sailing.

Quick question-- what time Sunday morning did they allow passengers (who carry their own bags) off the ship?

Joe

They let the do it yourself bags passengers off between 7:30 and 8:00.
