How do you carry your sign and sail card?

I agree on all points here. I hear folks say things like "well I'm on vacation and I'll never see these people again so who cares what I look like" but you wouldn't dress up like a clown and go walking around downtown and you'll probably never see any of *those* people again either :).

If you dress up like a clown and go walking around downtown, you will probably see those people again.

Actually I did dress up like a clown and went walking downtown a couple of months ago, but I was in a parade so no one thought twice about it.:D

I for one, wear a Running Buddy. It's a tiny, just over the card size pocket you attach with magnets to your waistband. No, the magnets don't seem to bother the card at all. I love it, even works while swimming and dries fast. Will hold room key, money, lipstick. Larger ones will hold cell phone and camera. I have both, and use whichever fits the need. Sometimes I have pockets, mostly I don't.

I will be wearing one, or actually two, one at a time, on my next cruise coming up soon.

Agree....I carry hers as well when she has no pockets....I want to keep a bit of dignity and that lanyard just screams "Clueless Tourist"....exception is kids, they are allowed to get away with the lanyard look

Wow, the last cruise I was on then must have been an entire ship filled with "Clueless Tourists"! I don't recall seeing ANYONE that did not have their sign and sail card on a lanyard around their necks, and I was actually looking to assess that phenomenon. I had wondered after reading these cruise critic threads about how many people actually did the lanyard thing versus ones who did not. I did not ever see even one example of someone not wearing a lanyard except tiny children.

That's not to say there weren't any, because I know I couldn't have seen every person, but if I was a new cruiser, I would have surmised based on what I saw that wearing your sign and sail card on a lanyard was a requirement.

My personal preference is to wear the lanyard. Keeps my card from getting lost, and it easily accessible. We hang them on the closet door knobs as we come into our room and they never get lost.

Why would anyone think they make you look old???? I don't see old people walking around places with things on a lanyard!

Are there people that are that insecure that they think wearing their sign and sail card on a lanyard is going to make them stand out and look old or "clueless"??? Good grief!! No one cares that much!!

Lets relax....I was having a little fun with the "Clueless Tourist" look. ya know, when you walk off the ship, lanyard around your neck, carrying the map, straw hat....touristy look? ya not following? lol

Anyway, I do find it a bit comical that on formal nights, you will undoubtably see people, nicely dressed, walking around and taking pictures at the different photog stations. Every so often the photographer misses the fact that one of the people, nicely dressed, has the lanyard dangling from their neck....not the best shot :D

I do carry my S&S card in my pocket....I don't do the lanyard thing....personal preference. I look enough like a dork, I don't need any additional help from a lanyard. Its ok for a woman to wear the lanyard, but not a grown man. Its like "Come on man, look in the mirror, take the lanyard off"

Question for experienced cruisers? How do you carry your sign and sail card? Do they provide some kind of lanyard with card holder? Or do people put them in their wallets? I'm imagining wanting to wander around the ship without a purse, and my kids don't usually carry wallets, so how do people keep their cards on them? Actually, because our room reservations don't match where we will actually be sleeping, both my oldest son and I are going to have to carry two cards with us -- one for charging and one for access to the room we are sleeping in. So double the consideration. ;-)

I use a key chain with an larger anchor charm on it on it. It has 2 hooks. One hook gets attached to my key card. The other hook is used to attach/unattach it to my beach shoulder bag, cross body purse, belt loop, etc. I have found this to be most effective.

Man people get cruel on here...

I do use a lanyard, a pretty beaded one I bought at the port in New Orleans. I also have a clear pouch on the end that closes, I not only put my S & S in it but I usually throw my chapstick in it as well when we are wondering around the ship. If we are on deck sunbathing, etc, I put the lanyard in my bag and wrap it around the handle so it does not get lost with the sunscreen and various items in my bag. I put it in my purse when we are at dinner and dressed up, (no lanyard pictures here). To each their own but who are we to judge what others do with their S & S as long as they can keep up with them however they wish.

My husband also uses a lanyard but tucks it in his shirt, which brings me to a funny story in Cozumel when he wondered off at the port area after returning from Mr. Sancho's (could have been the open bar) and falls asleep (passes out) on a bench. The rest of us thinking he returned to the ship boarded and could not find him. Luckily he wakes up 15 minutes before sail away and wonders back to the ship and tells them I took his S & S back with me and that I was on the ship. Sooo they let him on after checking ID and all the time his card was tucked in his shirt.....

I'm surprised anyone hasn't said this yet, but in my pocket, on a lanyard.

I like the one from the casino, but would never wear it around my neck. I clip the one end to my belt loop, and then put the card in my pocket.

Used that way, your card is always attached to you, but you're not advertising it. That little coil has a lot of give in it, and it's perfectly comfortable to place in a slot machine, open your room door or pull out to show a drink server without uncoiling at all, and can even be handed to a bartender at a bar with several (I want to say maybe 8-10) feet of give from where I am seated if they want to swipe it.

I think that's the second manner in which it was designed to be used. That's why there is a clip on one end, unlike the fabric type lanyards that are just a 'loop' with a 'ring' on them.

It is the best of both worlds in my opinion.

Sail & Sign card goes in the pocket... I've never understood the fascination people have with wearing them around their necks...

You are assuming women's swim suits have pockets or have a man around to tote all their stuff in his pockets. I am old and wear a lanyard with a plastic pocket on it for my DL and S&S cards and a few dollars for bar tender tips. I wore one for years when teaching school, doesn't really bother me to wear one now.

Recently Dollar Tree had cute Hawaiian type lanyards with flowers. They also had some with black and purple "rhinestones" - I bought a couple, one for every day and one for "elegant" night. No purse on a cruise ship for me!

You'll see more lanyards on board than almost any other item for carrying sign and sail cards.

Maybe something like this....it clips onto a pocket or belt, and there's a retractable cable that lets you pull it out. I usually just use the plastic coil lanyards given out in the casino, but I'm thinking of buying one of these instead.
