A curfew for pregnant teenagers who are drinking and smoking past 1:00 a.m.???

 

This thread is about freedom to make parenting choices. CCL decided that it needed to weigh in on my partner's choices to listen to her doctor and her body. Yet CCL decided that it will not weigh in on whether or not a 13 year old should be roaming a ship unsupervised (or even awake) at some arbitrary time.

 

 

I'll take the bait. I've known of at least two people who were encouraged to cut down on smoking, but not quit cold turkey while pregnant. Both were encouraged to slowly wean themselves off the cigarettes with the goal of quitting by the end of their pregnancy. It happens. Probably not often. But it's not unheard of.

 

Thanks for the reply. This is exactly how my partner's doctor (and her family members who are also doctors) view the realities of the situation. I'm no doctor but have slightly contrary personal opinions, but I think most people agree that quitting booze and ciggies are good for MOST people's long-term health (patients with serious mental health issues for instance are actually benefited from the ritual of cigarettes and nicotine use). However, quitting booze or cigs abruptly is actually quite taxing on the body in the short-term. It is better for heavy smokers and drinkers like my wife to cut back a little but not completely abstain while pregnant because the trauma of stopping either could cause more damage and realistically total damage in the form of either miscarriage or self-abortion.

 

My major gripe is that who is Carnival to tell anyone how to make medical decisions? Carnival is an entertainment company, they should leave health and parenting decisions to its customers and the people they consult.

 

She would be better off to not drink or smoke but she likes them both, they are legal, reasonably accepted by society and don't cost us much financially.

Dear partner...we got into the habit of saying partner instead of other more heteronormative appellations because we felt so strongly about one side the the marriage equality debate. I guess the term is archaic now.

 

Heteronormative appellations? Who talks like that? I bet you went to university.

It would probably make it easier for parents if there was a curfew. If you set one for your kids, but others don't, it becomes one more thing to argue about. Of course you have to follow through too, our 18 year old doesn't get to cruise anymore, you can only give so many chances. I'm hoping his younger brother will learn vicariously. #polysyllabic ;)

No curfew... A lot of that boils down to liability! If the cruise line takes on the responsibility of escorting and enforcing a curfew, parents will assume they are relieved of this responsibility... The moment there is an issue and a minor is out after curfew the cruise line has opened itself up to lawsuits saying they (the cruise line) was negligent in its duties and thus the incident/accident occurred. In fact there have been several reported cases (all settled BTW) in the Miami courts Brought against RCCL by parents of minors which occurred after hours (settlements sealed so not sure the results). I don't think CCL wants to open that Pandora's box so they keep the responsibility for curfews with the parents. They do however, limit where the teens can go (no casino, disco, adult comedy etc). But the responsibility of parenting does not take take a vacation even when the parents do!!

Excellent post. All very good points and good insight. And I couldn't agree more with that last line. If only all parents agreed with it...

I've watched it play out before in smoking threads, but posting it in a teen curfew thread, that's a stretch. He must be getting desperate to find a way to talk about this again.:rolleyes:

Not that I owe you an explanation but I would describe myself as EXTREMELY moderate. Also, not that it's any of your business but I've been a registered Republican since I was 18, love freedom, and love love love America and thinks it's the best country in the world.

 

If believing marriage is a social and religious institution and shouldn't be regulated or sanctioned by the government, parents should be able to decide how to raise their kids within reason, people should be able to make personal health decisions, and that gay people aren't demons makes me "super liberal" or a troll in your eyes, I guess I'll just have to live with it. :D

Yes, I love this! But to answer the original question, I don't think that Carnival has a curfew of any kind.

I find it hilarious/ironic that CCL doesn't have a curfew. When my dp was pregnant they stopped her from being able to purchase cigarettes and use her cheers package yet they let parents make decisions in other areas about the health and well-being of families. What is most funny is teens running around have the potential to be a nuisance to other passengers, a pregnant mother drinking and smoking in moderation(on the advice of her physician) is a no-no :rolleyes:...gimme a break!

 

Ok, but I thought physicians advised everyone not to smoke. As for drinking, Cheers is not for one or two drinks.
