Drinking / Gambling for 19-yr olds?

Ever wonder why that is?

Ok so an 18 year old is not responsible enough to drink...that tells me 18 yo take chances and statistically do stupid things I guess

So of course 18 yo will volunteer to serve in greater numbers than say a 25 yo

So of course 18 yo will vote for the party that makes it sound like everything will be given to them if elected.

That's the point

As far as the Ncl casino is concerned...well it doesn't take a genius to figure out an 18 yo will take more chances with money than a mortgage paying 35yo family man

It's because the spineless bags in our congress( no caps, they are no longer worthy) wouldn't stand up to MADD and tell'em to prove their statistics.

I was hoping to get the info I was looking for (which I did) and not get a lecture about allowing my 19 yr old to have a few beers on vacation with his parents.

Thank you to those who helped me with the info I was looking for. When I'm looking for parenting advice I will go to a parenting site, not cruise critic.

You've been around here since 2007. You put the words "drinking, gambling and 19 year-old" in the subject line and didn't think you would get those comments?

Well said. We always signed the waiver and our sons turned out fine. Enjoy your cruise and make sure to make a toast with your 19 year old.

Don't forget Nancy Reagan....she was a large force behind the legislation that removed federal highway dollars from any state that wouldn't raise their drinking age to 21, as I recall.

We are just about to book a cruise with our 20 year old son. He will be in a cabin with his older brother and would be entitled to the free UDP, in view of the above waiver info will he receive the package or will he have to stick to the free soft drink package and us do the waiver and then pay for the odd drink for him?

I don't think that the under 21 can partake of the drink package.

  • 1 month later...

We all seem to forget that we are one of 12 countries to have a minimum drinking age of 21 (Côte d'Ivoire, Equatorial Guinea, Iraq, Kiribati, Micronesia, Mongolia, Nauru, Oman, Palau, Samoa, Sri Lanka, United States).

There are 115 countries where the drinking age is 18-19.

Bottom line: MOST kids are going to drink with OR WITHOUT our consent or at least try it (and if you're sitting there saying to yourself "not mine" you are kidding yourself). I did it, my son does it and he's 20. He can even buy it on his own. You just have to teach them, from a very early age, how to do it responsibly. It started with only drinking in my presence.

* NO drinking and driving: EVER!! is the first rule in our book. No excuses. And yes, I have received many calls to "come and get me please"

* NEVER supply or buy alcohol to/for ANY OF YOUR FRIENDS.

* Use your BACtrac if you are unsure. Just because you feel fine or "only had one" doesn't matter. It's what you blow on the BA when you get pulled over.

* Do not let any of your friends drive after drinking.

Sorry, but that's the reality of it. No, I am not a drinker, I occasionally have ONE beer. But as a parent I am not stupid or blind so I can only teach responsibility.

I personally allow my son to drink on cruises. I have signed the waiver form for him on NCL and he is always responsible and does not EVER get stupid, loud and obnoxious, or out of control. I have seen grown people on cruises act much worse than some of the kids.

Pointless anyway, since EVERY port of call in the Caribbean the drinking age is 18.

And we were honored to get this lecture , exactly why???

Note: my son was killed the night of his 21st birthday so you are not providing anything any parent does not already know. And yes my son WAS the drunk driver and I thank god no one else was injured or killed.

JUDGE NOT LEAST YOU BE JUDGED, no parent wants to ever walk in my shoes.

18yrs old and you're legally adult, can vote, join the military and perhaps get killed/maimed for your country - but you can't have a beer until you're 21yrs old.

Utterly backward, about time the US got away from the "demon booze" mentality/magnet and joined the rest of the world:)

Have the 18 year old go down to the local recruiting office, enlist, raise their right hand, swear the oath, go through Basic Training, serve and then they won't have a problem being served a beer.

Until then...

Anyone know if it's legal or allowed for my 19-yr old to drink alcohol or gamble in the casinos once we are out of the U.S.? He is assuming so and would like to let him down easy before we go if it's not.

I sailed the Breakaway in August.

I had to sign a Beer/Wine waiver for my 18 year old son.

He drank a few beers and won over $1000 playing blackjack while my dh and I were out a show OMG We found him in the high roller area LOL He started with $60.

I actually was happy my ds was able to drink with us and even not with us when he was with my dd-22. I wanted to see

how he handled his alcohol. He is away at school and I know he will drink so I wanted to see how he handled himself as well

as how much, if any, he drank.

Anyway, yes, you just have to fill out a waiver.

Have a great trip!

Lynn...

There are a lot of countries that do not allow women to drive or be seen in public without a male relative. Should the US adopt those laws just because other countries do?

You were "honored" simply because so many want to judge the parents and their parenting and whether to allow their kids to drink or not drink. I was not judging anybody, as so many others are quick to do.

I too have had someone close to me killed by an irresponsible drunk driver so all I can do for MY KID is teach responsibility, which was the point to my post.

Works for us here in Europe.

If you let your kids drink from 15 - 16 in a responsible setting (e.g. a beer round the dinner table with family) then when they get to 18 - 21 it isn't such a big deal.

But when you don't let kids drink until they're 21, of course they go mad when they're finally free to hit the bars.

The United States is not Europe. How many 16-18 year olds in Europe have their own personal automobiles?

I've been in the sheds at the soccer stadium in Chelsea and have seen plenty of your "youts" quite mad from alcohol.

Completely agree with this. My parents did that with us, and drinking was never a big deal.

I don't think the OP was judging anyone. All parents know we can lecture until we are blue in the face; repeat the same thing over and over again; drill it into their brain, etc., etc., ... but anything can happen at any time. It definitely does not mean the parent was a bad parent, or did something wrong. I am truly sorry for your loss. It is every parents worst nightmare. :(

You are mistaken, but since you said it with such authority maybe nobody will notice. The national law was passed in 1984. I know in the late 70's is was still 18 in most of the south at least. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Minimum_Drinking_Age_Act
