Cabin Location

I am begining some research for a river cruise next fall and haven't seen anything about choosing a cabin location. Looking at Uniworld, AMA, Avalon, Scenic and most of them have multiple levels of similar french or regular balcony rooms. Just wondering the pros and cons of fore, aft, high, low decks. Thanks for your help.

Being on a river . I don't think you'll have a problem with any cabin.

What your willing to pay will make the difference. There aren't any waves on the river to cause a problem.

Just be sure to look at the deck plan to see what is above you. Walking track, sun deck, and lounge may create objectionable noise. Similarly proximity to reception and stairs may not be the quietest. If you have a lower level cabin close to the bow or an aft cabin, engine/thruster noise when docking or locking may be a problem.

You might want to give some thought to the afternoon sun. We traveled in August last year from Budapest to Vislhofen. By happenstance we were on the south side of the ship and it was very hot on the balcony in the afternoons. It might be less of an issue in the Autumn but we would opt for the north side of the ship if we were to travel that itinerary again.

On Scenic we travelled once top deck and four times middle deck, all mid ships apart from this year when we were second cabin from reception, no problem being closer to lounge ect, mid ships is best if your worried about engine noise etc although I have never heard anyone complain on Scenic wherever the cabin is located, they do however supply pairs of ear plugs in each cabin, we have never used them. Happy cruising. CA

Lowest deck you could hear the engines and water in the locks more. If you cannot walk well or cant do stairs well, best to stay on the mid level (check for elevator) and close to the front of the boat. When someone mentioned the sun on one side of the ship, it came to mind about which side was docking (kind of hard to figure out which side has the best cruising sights) and because most people dont spend lots of time in their rooms.
