I'm going to give a summary comment and say thank you to all who provided their stories (mostly medical) on this thread. I was really curious as to whether other have gotten free medical attention based on extenuating circumstances. Unfortunately we did not hear as much about the other issue.

Many were to concerned that this passenger may have been crying wolf resulting in this thread going all over the place.

I was on this cruise. We had rough weather for a few hours. The only things that changed were the outside decks were closed and they cancelled shows with aerial performances. I felt sorry for the people that were sick, and I heard of one man that fell and hit his head getting out of the elevator.

My friend that I was traveling with was also feeling sick in the morning, she went down to medical and got the free medication. She laid down for a couple of hours and was back feeling fine the rest of the day.

I felt sorry for the elderly that were having trouble walking, but there were plenty of crew around helping them especially in the WJ.

We were able to go to all 3 meals, spent time in the Solarium and Casino during the day, and that night were dancing to DSB, the Journey tribute band, and Rock the Boat. We also went to a Billy Joel tribute in 270, and a late night comedy in the theater.

There were at no time 50 ft waves, maybe 20 - 25 ft at times, and at no time did I feel we were in any danger. I had water bottles and apples on my desk, and not one thing moved the whole time.

The Mom and daughter looked pretty good in the interview for being so sick the day before. The cruise line can't be responsible for someone that get scared or seasick on a cruise. It happens on all cruises. If someone got airsick or got scared on a plane in turbulence, would the airline reimburse them for their return flight on a round trip ticket, if they didn't want to fly home?

Thank you, glad to hear from someone who was there...

Thought the same thing myself, and not even by the port, but at the airport.

Was this at the airport in Bermuda or when she got home to Canada?

Just looked at the video again and that's not the Bermuda airport. No doubt she called the news media, otherwise, there would have been no reason to have a camera crew there.

It was at Toronto's Pearson Airport -- Global TV -- I think there are a few us on CC that also wonder how the heck that crew should up at the airport to meet/interview her. It is rare we see any of the TV crews awaiting a passenger from a cruise ship (where the ship has sailed into/out of bad weather). Snowstorms and stuck at the airports, yeah -- one of's like this -- nope.

I heard a story today (from a passenger), for which I thought would be interesting to get some feedback on. This is the story as I heard it.

The passenger, a woman and her 10 year old daughter (neither have cruised before) were on the Anthem very recently to Bermuda. With the tropical storm along the coast, she was expressing her concern and nervousness before the ship left port. Many told her not to worry, it would be fine. Just as they left Bayonne, the Captain made his usual announcements and also advised them that they were going to take an alternative route to avoid the storm so there is no need for concern.

The next day (Sunday) they woke up to the storm. People were sick throughout the day and vomiting all over the place. They tried to go outside to get some air but were unable to because of the high winds and movements of some of the pool deck furniture. Her daughter ended up throwing up throughout the day to the point of being very dehydrated. Early evening and her daughter could not walk and was almost passing out so she asked a staff member to assist her in getting her daughter to the medical center (via a wheelchair).

Upon arrival to the medical center she was told there would be a $149 (US) consultation fee. The woman stated that this was unreasonable considering we all know what’s going on (the storm), this is extenuating circumstances, etc. They eventually told her to give her daughter half a Dramamine and sent her on her way.

My first set of questions are, has this happened to anyone else in the past? Has anyone visited the doctor as a result of something that may be considered the ships fault (tripping on a buckled carpet resulting in an injury as an example) and was the doctor’s visit complementary? Should the ship make exceptions when it comes to charging fees when circumstances are extraordinary (storm, virus outbreak, other)?

The story continues. Once in Bermuda, the weather was fine. However there was the return trip. Based on what happened on the way to Bermuda and it not going as was suggested it would go, they decided to leave the ship and fly home to potentially avoid the same on the way back. She is now asking RCI to reimburse her for the cost of the flights home. She indicated that RCI’s response to her call was somewhat nonchalant about the situation but did apologize. She is now waiting for an answer.

Second set of questions are, has this or something similar happened to anyone before? Is RCI responsible in any way? Should they, as a good-will gesture, reimburse for the cost of the airfare if not responsible? I doubt there would be any sense in giving them a credit towards a future cruise based on this experience.

I don’t know how bad this trip was compared to the February trip but they reimbursed those passengers for the cruise and gave them (I believe) a 50% credit towards a future cruise. Is this the same situation?

Obviously the ship/crew/captain is not in control of the weather but should they risk the trip (verses cancelling) if they are not in full control, especially when they know of a potential issue?? Just looking for some experiences or comments.

The story as you heard is just that a story, Were you on the ship...NO. Any post such IMHO is a waste of time and energy. For what's worth RCL should not reimburse squat for the airfare or anything else....K.O.:rolleyes:

I agree with you. I have never had the press waiting for my arrival to see if I enjoyed my holiday;), especially when I did not arrive on my previously "scheduled" flight.

If you mean flying home, maybe there wasn't anything about that issue because it is rare that someone does.

As to the billing for medical services, my 10 year old fell while rollerblading on AOS April 2015. We took him to the ship's doctor the next morning as we were pulling into St. Lucia. Doctor xrayed arm, found fracture, splinted it, burned the xray onto a cd and gave us the name of an orthopedist on the island.

No charge for any of the services on the boat. We paid out of pocket for ortho on the island, and were reimbursed by medical insurance in Dec 2015.

I hope she doesn't book a cruise to Antarctica and have to cross the Drake. She would be disappointed to find out that she doesn't have the option to fly back, and has to make the crossing a second time.

Several years ago we did a Australia & New Zealand cruise, and while crossing the Tasmanian Sea the boat was getting thrown around like crazy for about 20 hours. The Captain made announcements, sick bags were hung around the ship, decks closed, and so on. I was so ill I was green and could only lay in bed eating ginger and moaning that I wished I would die. DH slept through the night, got up and went to breakfast and ate a huge spread while chairs were tipping over and a few large decorative glass jars of olives and such came crashing down. I certainly didn't fly home from Tasmania early, and it never crossed my mind that someone should compensate me because I became sea sick. I actually find it odd, as its an inherent part of cruising at some point.

While on my honeymoon, was participating in the Flowrider with my new bride. I went first and boogie boarded my heart out!. Eventually I fell trying to perform a sweet barrell roll. NBD. Current carries me to the top, where being the gentleman that I am, I wait for the board to come back up the water to hand it to my wife. The board whacks me in the foot. Again, NBD. I hand her the board and start watching her from behind the Flowrider. Happen to glance down at my foot and notice some blood. Once again, NBD. I go to the activities counter to ask for a band aid. She sees the blood and hands me a towel. The moment that towel touched my toe, I squeeled out with the force of a hundred men! Big toenail ripped clean off. This was a BD! We take a ride down to medical and the doctor pulls out the worlds thickest needle. I have a fear of needles and turn white thinking he's about to inject this thing in my little piggie. He allays my fears and tells me it's just filled with fluid to clear the area on the surface. He wraps it nicer than I could ever do. Gives me a bunch of extra gauze and wrap (I still have some 5 years later!) and tells me to come by tomorrow to double check that everything is ok, and they would rewrap it. Someone from ships security/human resources asked me a couple questions, basically making sure I wasn't planning to sue I imagine and he was on his way. Other than not being able to go in the pool, I enjoyed the last 3 days of my honeymoon immensely!

Oh, and I didn't get charged a penny.
