I just got a free cruise! (I think)

If a person wins a cruise in a contest, taxes are collected on the total value of the cruise. Does the OP's offer incur taxes?

To those of you that know, how does this work?

No as it is considered a reduction in price paid, not income.

Someone on our roll call for a short (one night) Princess cruise reported that they got a call from Princess - the ship was oversold; they agreed to miss the cruise and for compensation got a 'free' seven night cruise. I think there was some OBC also. The rest of us on the roll call were sitting by our phones waiting for our call ... which never came :(

Congrats to the OP, sounds like a great deal. Wonder if you will get captain circle credit for the cruise if you are not paying?

Since we're on the same cruise as the OP, now I'm hoping to get a call like that. But we're in a deluxe balcony rather than the mini the OP was in.

Good for you!! And yes you will get a check. Just look at your mail carefully it will look like junk mail when you get the check.

Tony

Yeah also it may not show as a letter from Princess, but from Carnival, well that's what happened with mine, nearly tossed it.

So I'm booked on my first Princess cruise ever, Regal out of NYC 10/22 Canada, with a mini-suite L206. Princess called me today and said if I change to room E329, they will refund my entire fare paid. I'm like what's the catch? She told me slightly smaller room that is not a mini suite but has an obstructed view. I said OK sounds great sign me up. I feel like I won the lottery, however now that the adrenaline has worn off, I'm questioning if I made the right decision, has this happened to anyone else? They gave me a shipboard credit of my fare (about 2000) they said what we dont use will be sent to us 4 to 10 weeks after the cruise. Will I ever see this check?

That's great news! I'll be on this cruise as well. Happy sailing!

Thanks everyone for excellent info, tips & warm wishes! To answer a couple questions, I booked direct through princess website, I live in Syracuse, so I do drive to the pier in NYC, and they are giving me the $2000 as a straight onboard credit, not in addition to anything so I do have to be careful not to go wild and blow it all- thanks for the link Theo and I'll be sure to send some pics of the obstructed view balcony when I return. Again, thanks to everyone who replied

This happened to me. We moved from a balcony cabin to and interior and cruised for free. We paid the tips and port taxes. The entire amount was on given in onboard credit and we were issued the remaining amount ( a large sum) in cash when the cruise was over. No strings!

We were so grateful we made it a point to book another Princess cruise the next year with the money we saved! But that was not expected in any way shape or form.

Congrats sounds wonderful!

Question: What if OP already has obc from other sources. Which goes first? We get military and Shareholder etc etc.. Which do they take first?

They use any non-refundable OBC first.

I was told to come down the last night and they'd give me a check for the $3000. When I got there, though, she started peeling off $100 bils, 30 of them! I felt like I'd won the lottery. This was 8 years ago on Caribbean Princess and we gave up our balcony cabin for an inside on Lido Decik. Free cruises are the best~!

We would also take that deal. And Princess will send you the refund of your remaining OBC. But be careful and do not toss out any junk mail (in envelopes) until checking what is inside. The last time Princess sent us a check it came from a third party company (they must have a contract with Princess) and I almost threw it out thinking it was junk :). Your post cleared up a minor mystery. We are on the following Regal cruise (leaves NYC next Thursday) and thought about tacking on your 5 day voyage (back to back) if we could get a good deal. But checking my usual online sources...we did not see any great deals on the short cruise. It then occurred to me that the ship will likely be very full and used as a "fam" cruise for many cruise/travel agents not to mention additional groups who were looking for a short cruise. But please make sure to save some food and booze for us :)
