Cruise Suggestions

I am looking for suggestions for a cruise for next summer. I am hoping to find something that is 14+ days that sails from a US port on the east coast. It will be me and my 10 year old DD. I do not fly so we primarily use the cruise ship as transportation to ports that we can't access via car but we like to have fun activities on board for sea days. I live in Chicago and I am willing to do a 2 day drive to the embarkation port. Money is no object for this cruise and ideally we would find something that goes to South America. I have looked at the mainstream cruise lines but haven't found anything that meets my criteria. Does anyone have any suggestions of other cruise lines to try?

A Caribbean 14 nighter in the summer will be difficult to find. Most every ship that does those longer cruises has left the Caribbean for Summer itineraries.

However , you can do two 7 nighters , back to back by choosing a ship that alternates itineraries or changing ships .

A good TA can help you narrow down the back to back choices that interest you.

Have you researched Holland America and Princess? They always have 10+ days cruises.

HAL doesn't have much in this description until the Fall Foliage cruises in the North East. Otherwise HAL ships are gone (to Europe and Alaska) starting in early April.

Correction- they will have the Voyage of the Vikings, but that is 30+ days, roundtrip.

Go to the link at the top of the page "FIND A CRUISE"

Put in the months you want to cruise & the embarkation port

It will give you an idea of what is available

You probably will not find any South American cruises in the summer they usually go from Dec to April

RCCL, Carnival & NCL will have lots to do for children & adults

I do not think you will find anything to South America in that time frame; you might consider MSC Divinia - sailing from Miami on regular 14 day Eastern and Western Caribbean itineraries; or Holland America's Maasdam and Veendam on several 14 day New England/Canada itineraries from Boston; or possibly Cunard's Queen Mary 2 sailing from Brooklyn, NY on July 6 for 22 days to Southampton, UK and several ports in Norway.

You will not find any cruise that goes to South America and back in 14 days no matter what time of year you cruise. Those cruises when starting in the US will be 14 days down and another 14 back. Go to http://www.cruisetimetables.com and plug in your possible departure ports from the top list, then choose when you want to cruise. That will show you what is available in your time frame. EM

Depending on how many more days you want to add, you could take Cunard's 22-night cruise from New York to England and Norway. Or take the trans-Atlantic legs of this cruise and tour England on your own eight days without the Norwegian portion. Cunard also offers trans-Atlantic cruises you could take back-to-back from NYC to Southampton, but they wouldn't give you any port time.

You might want to sit down with a cruise specialist but you may be limited by what itineraries are available and from what embarkation port for your time frame. some cruiselines will send many of their ships to Alaska, which is a very popular itinerary, but start from Vancouver, Seattle, Anchorage, or San Francisco, or to the Mediterranean. South America has their winter at that time so it's more of a US fall/winter type of cruise.

Thank you all for the suggestions! I will be weighing my options. We are already booked on the DCL fantasy in June and I might just tack on the next sailing for a back to back even though we did the second itinerary last year. We could go even longer than 14 days so a transatlantic with some time in Europe might work too.

OP: You may want to reconsider "I do not fly" since it severely limits your window on the world.

I wish it was that easy. There are a few mitigating factors as to why I don't fly. Fear that is fed by a physical medical condition is just one of the reasons. I know that it limits where we can travel and that is why I would love to find a cruise that will take us to new places that we can't travel to by car. On the other hand I love driving and part of the fun of a vacation is the journey to our destination.

Here's a thought: Holland America Veendam 7 day round trip Boston -Bermuda 7/15 - 22 (great place you cannot visit by car and a chance to see without flying), then stay aboard Veendam for 7/22 sailing on 14 day round trip to Canada.
