15 Drink Limit

Maybe this is old news to some, but I have cruised Carnival a bunch and just learned there is a 15 (alcoholic) drink/day limit per person (based on Sail & Sign card) - regardless if you have Cheers or are paying "out of pocket".

No, I didn't hit the limit but was at the bar when someone did. He threw a fit and probably needed to be cut-off anyway. Anywho, thought that was interesting. Bartender said it was a safety thing, but people often get someone else to buy for them if they hit their limit.

You know I wondered about this. Has anyone bought more than 15 drink on their card (not Cheers program).

It makes absolutely zero sense to cut one off but not the other. Are we sure the 15 limit isn't for everyone regardless of paying or plan?

I'm sure if you search this site you will see that the 15 drink/day limit applies to everyone. It has been reported that if someone has the DOU card in the casino, even those free drinks count towards the 15 drink limit.

Personally, I am a fan of the limit. Even in my younger days, when I could party hard with the rest of them, I don't think I ever drank more than 15 drinks a day (even at all-inclusives). To consume more alcohol than that in a day just seems to be dangerous and unsafe.

Arbitrary numbers like that don't work though. Everyone is different in how they do with alcohol, not to mention just different size people. A 100lb lady having the same daily limit as a 300lb biker guy doesn't make sense. Cutting off should be on a case by case basis.

I understand the limit on the Cheers program from a financial standpoint.

I've seen folks absolutely lose their religion after being cut off at 15 drinks. I'm 100% behind the max limit.

Disclosure: I'm a former bartender who took responsibility to cut off the overserved seriously, as a matter of public safety.

At least the ship captain is handling the navigation and not the 15 drink person. But, there are plenty of places on a ship that an obliterated person can harm themselves.

for what its worth.....we were told by one of the bartenders on the Elation in April that if you reach your limit on the Cheers program you will not be permitted to charge a drink to your S&S card either.

Nope doesn't happen. I hit the 15 drink limit of the cheers program every day. Still allowed to buy drinks on sail and sign card. Just got to know how to act when getting drinks.

Just got off the Breeze today. Several members of our party hit their 15 drink limit on Cheers and were not allowed to purchase additional drinks. We were advised by one of the cocktail waitresses in the casino that the only way to get around that is to order additional drinks and pay for them before hitting drink 15.

I am not a huge partier but have got the notice you have one drink left...it was on a seaday and I was ordering bottled water as well and that goes against the count.

Cheers and happy cruising.

Bottled water (or any other non-alcoholic drink) does not count against the 15 on the CHEERS program.

As for a 15 drink limit when not using CHEERS - I've not only never seen that happen, but I also know many people who have ordered more than 15 drinks (normally husband/wife ordering for the other) or in some cases, just drinking that many. So, unless it's a new policy, there is no 15 drink limit unless it's on CHEERS.

After reading this, it sounds like Carnival is a party boat? If you have such a rule, then it was created because of a widespread problem. Let's keep bragging how many drinks you can have! Makes Carnival look good!

It has everything to do with the $$$$, not because of a widespread problem.

It sounds like the bartender wisely claimed an across-the-board 15-drink limit as an excuse to cut someone off who needed to be cut off. Someone who didn't seem like an obnoxious drunk and was willing to keep paying Carnival for alcohol and tipping the bartender would probably not run into the same limit, especially if they were obviously buying for others.

I do find it odd when grown adults brag about having more than fifteen drinks in a day. Fortunately, you can have completely different experiences on the same cruise ship -- It's only a "party ship" for those who want it to be.

I agree, a 130 lb woman consuming 10 drinks in 8 hours would be close to comatose in BAC. Where as a 250 lb male would just be drunk (maybe double the DUI limit). I think these go up exponentially as drinks are consumed in even longer periods of time. For a single individual 15 drinks over the course of a day when bars are open on a ship could be a bit of a challenge. But you only need 6-8 drinks to break even versus your S&S card. So 9-10 is doable and works in your favor, wallet wise.

And isn't there a time limit between ordering drinks on Cheers, sort of to prevent you from buying for others?

Actually....not even close. The 130lb female would barely eclipse the DUI limit of .08. The male in the example would be <.04 and legal to drive in any state.

The body eliminates roughly one drink an hour naturally. If an average sized person consumes one drink an hour their intoxication level would remain very low.

I have always gotten a DOU card in the casino. There is a 15 drink limit on those as well. However, I never ever reach that amount but could if i ordered a drink for family members.

There is a time limit of 15 minutes between each drink (at least in the casino).

I didn't realize you were concerned with CCL's public image. Most refreshing;).

Not quite...from web site called prevention.gwu/education:

Generally speaking, alcohol is absorbed into the blood relatively quickly and metabolized more slowly. In an average 150 pound person, for example, each drink adds 0.02% to BAC and hour that passes removes 0.01% from it. This is why alcohol concentrations build steadily throughout a drinking session.

Let's put 15 drinks into perspective: each drink has 1 and 1/2 ounces of alcohol in it.....15 drinks = 22 and 1/2 ounces of alcohol, or just about 2/3 of a quart (32 oz)

Not many "social" drinkers will consume 2/3 of a bottle of vodka or rum each day.
