Do they have cards and board games somewhere on the Island Princess? If so, where?

 

We have 8 sea days for the first time and it might be nice to relax and play some, but I don't want to take stuff with me.

The library has a small selection of games that you can use. The store sells decks of cards.

Yes. The Island has a "card room" that's part of the Library mid-ship on deck 8. There are a number of board games and several tables to use.

 

FYI, the library on the Island has wonderful leather-like comfortable club chairs with hassocks where you can relax and read, look out over the seas, etc.

Another good secret is to go to the casino and buy used decks of cards for $1 per deck! These are used for a few hours in the casino and then never used again. They are extremely high quality and have big numbers on them. We buy 6 decks each cruise as we play a lot of hand & foot canasta!

PS- $5 for cards in gift shop

Hi Paul. If you are patient enough, I can probably learn to play bridge. We were a pinochle family growing up, so that is my main partner game. I've only ever played hearts against a computer. I played canasta when I was a teenager, but that has been a while. :eek:

The dedicated bridge masters who used to do duplicate bridge on the ships have been eliminated, so it is just a do-it-yourself thing now. This is a big issue with DH whose favorite thing about sea days has always been playing bridge. If we were on your sailing, Paul, you would find him right there with you. :) On the 50th Anniversary cruise last year, he managed to join a group of just four people that played regularly. He often talks about his fun then with Chris and Ken.

Our favorite board game is Scrabble. There was a norovirus outbreak on the Sun Princess several years ago on one of our cruises. They removed all of the board games from the library. I bought a portable Scrabble board that we now bring on our cruises.

 

I'm a duplicate bridge player. The lack of duplicate games on cruises isn't that big a deal to me. The quality of the bridge was never great. For instance, one of my partners put down a lovely 11-card dummy for me. She did not realize she was missing two cards during the bidding--and my right-hand opponent did not realize she had two extra cards either. The director was able to straighten it out and we replayed the hand.

Yes they do in the Library. I even seen some Puzzles there.

Sometimes you will see a "community" puzzle that is left out for anyone to work on.

A deck of cards is EASY to take with you and good to have along in case of airport delays. :)

That sounds fun. I am way too slow at puzzles to ever make enough progress on a cruise to do one alone. ;)

Thank you both! We will take both regular and pinochle playing cards, but I doubt I would break them out in an airport, even if we have (which we hopefully will not) delays.

One more question for all of my helpful friends out there.

 

We planned a mini-golf tournament for our roll-call, but they heard that it was gone. A deck plan website that shall remain nameless (due to CC rules) has Princess links on deck 15 just behind the Platinum studio. The Princess web site has this listed as "lawn court".

 

Are either of these places mini-golf? I saw a U-tube video of a "Lawn Court" and it looked like it might be putting practice, but not what I would call mini-golf, even in the weakest sense of the word.

While my wife and I were quite disappointed with the truncated public space on Island I have to agree that the library area was a good one. Some ships have a dinky little library area but Island was as Pam describes. I saw people in there curled up reading all the time but it was large enough that it was never crowded.
