pdz Posted February 9, 2017 #1 Share Posted February 9, 2017 Can you use OBC to pay for daily gratuity charges?
Dina7 Posted February 9, 2017 #2 Share Posted February 9, 2017 Yes, OBC can be used to pay for anything that's charged to your stateroom account.
pizzalady1 Posted February 9, 2017 #3 Share Posted February 9, 2017 The poster above is not exactly correct. OBC comes two ways: refundable (like from a travel agent) or non-refundable (like a promo from NCL). Refundable CAN be used for the daily gratuities, but non-refundable CAN NOT be used. On the 2nd day of your cruise, go to Guest Services and get a copy of your invoice. It will itemize the total of refundable and non-refundable OBC. casofilia Posted February 9, 2017 #4 Share Posted February 9, 2017 Non-refundable can be used for anything you BUY on board. Gratuities you do not buy they are a "compulsory" charge. Keep watching your folio to see what has been removed/is left in the two types of OBC.
don't-use-real-name Posted February 9, 2017 #5 Share Posted February 9, 2017 Try and use the NON-Refundable OBC for specialty dining drinks any liquor purchases and extra tips to crew i.e. cabin steward butler concierge gifts in gift shop shore excursions behind scenes tours - - - - - USE THIS OBC FIRST ! Also consider purchase of Next Cruise certificates with the N/R OBC although when you purchase the Certificates you will also get more OBC that is N/R. Use the Refundable OBC "LAST" to cash out if unused ! You CAN *NOT* use the N/F OBC to pay the DSC (Daily Service Charge) and can not cash it out at the end of the cruise ! However it is possible to cash it out in the Casino* with a service charge (3 %???) *** Casino must be open to do this - don't wait to the last to try this (usually the night before the cruise ends is sufficient ! Rare BirdTravels Posted February 9, 2017 #6 Share Posted February 9, 2017 Yes, OBC can be used to pay for anything that's charged to your stateroom account. Diana seven may not be correct. Only refundable onboard credit can be used to pay daily service charges. Nonrefundable OBC cannot be used for paying service charges.

I had no idea there were 2 types of OBC. I've only been on 4 cruises & only had OBC on one of them. Many thanks to the posters after me for explaining. They have been helpful, as I have $100 in OBC from NCL & $50 from my travel agent for my next cruise on ncl. Is the OBC from a travel agent ALWAYS considered refundable? Hoping at least that can be applied to gratuities. Edited February 9, 2017 by Dina7

Hopes4 Posted February 9, 2017 #9 Share Posted February 9, 2017 Is the OBC from a travel agent ALWAYS considered refundable? Hoping at least that can be applied to gratuities. Yes it is, your travel agent purchases it as a gift for you. Be aware that even though it is refundable, any unused money is generally refunded back via the original payment. In other words, it would be refunded back to the purchaser rather than you, the recipient. So use it or loose it.
elainemasey61 Posted March 4, 2017 #10 Share Posted March 4, 2017 When you make a purchase, in the store for example, how do you know which OBC will be debited? Also, what do you say/do in the casino to cash out? Thanks Sent from my iPad using Forums
Rare shof515 Posted March 4, 2017 #11 Share Posted March 4, 2017 by default, your keycard thing should be programed to use the non-refundable onboard credit first. after the non refundable onboard credit is used, then it uses the refundable onboard credit. if you unsure about the balances, you can stop by guest services and they can tell how much refundable and non refundable onboard credit you have
elainemasey61 Posted March 4, 2017 #12 Share Posted March 4, 2017 Thank you. So NCL credit as part of a promo is not refundable, Travel agent OBC may or may not be refundable. What about OBC from the NCL MasterCard? Refundable or not? Sent from my iPad using Forums

If you read some of the terms and conditions of the onboard credit, if it says it can not be used for service charge/gratuities then it is a good indication of non-refundable credit. NCL DASH onboard credit terms & conditions: Onboard credit has no monetary value and is non-transferable. It may not be used toward onboard service charges or prepurchased activities. FredZiffle Posted March 4, 2017 #15 Share Posted March 4, 2017 How does one get back any refundable OBC that isn't used? Should you expect your TA to automatically credit your CC after the cruise, or do you need to ask for it?
Rare shof515 Posted March 4, 2017 #16 Share Posted March 4, 2017 If you have refundable OBC, you usually get a check deliver to your room on the last night of the cruise or mailed to your home address after the cruise
EllieinNJ Posted March 4, 2017 #17 Share Posted March 4, 2017 If you have two types of refundable OBC, some you bought and some given by a TA, can you have them use up the TA's first and whatever is left over sent back to you?

Doesn't matter. TA's given to you is yours and will be included as part of the refundable obc as a single amount. Your onboard account distinguishes only between non-refundable and refundable obc regardless of the sources of it.

As you said, it is a gift to you. If it is refundable obc it is included with any other refundable obc and if unused goes back to YOU, not to the TA. denatravels Posted March 4, 2017 #20 Share Posted March 4, 2017 Is the OBC from a travel agent ALWAYS considered refundable? Hoping at least that can be applied to gratuities. No-- it is not ALWAYS refundable. You need to double check with your TA or check your account onboard. There are some sources of OBC available to TAs that are different than just purchasing it, and it would not be refundable.
