Some thoughts on smoking in the casino

I just know how this will rile up the smokers again, but I think it needs to be said. On sea days, the casino was virtually deserted. On another line where there is no smoking allowed in the casino, it was jumping on sea days. I do not think this is a coincidence and I feel Carnival should look into this. Flame shield up!

I don't understand why they allow smoking indoors at all. Most smokers I know don't smoke inside their own homes or smoke only in one room. I don't think most would be bothered by having to go outside especially if a sheltered area was provided in case of bad weather.

Could it be the filtration system is just better on some ships? We were on the Valor last year and spent a lot of time in the casino because we loved the band in the evening and we don't recall being overly annoyed by the smoke. We don't smoke obviously and I am pretty sensitive to it. Just a thought

The ships filtration could definitely be better if they wanted it to be. I live in Illinois and all public places are nonsmoking but back before it was we use to go to a comedy club and they had nonsmoking shows. They changed the ventilation system and stopped having the nonsmoking shows. They offered money back to anyone that was bothered by smoke. We went and even though there were people smoking right next to us it never bothered us. It was amazing! So it is possible!

I totally understand. I have a free casino cruise booked for April on Triumph, but I've already decided that after that I'm scaling back my Carnival cruises until they change their casino area smoking policy. Gambling is a big part of my cruises, and I'd rather spend my casino dollars in a smoke-free casino. Carnival's casinos and promenades have become too smoky for me. Smoking belongs outside.

I'm a non-smoker, but I've never been on a cruise where the casino smoke was bothersome to me. I can't actually recall seeing anyone smoke at the tables - must be at the bar and/or slots.

Carnival should/will do what makes sense financially - at some point, the percentage of gaming non-smokers + life expectancy will exceed the percentage of gaming smokers. Cruise industry actuaries will factor in weight (are non-smokers heavier???) and propensity to cruise repeatedly. And - baddabing baddaboom - they will follow the money.

If other lines already have smoke free casinos it's likely on the way to Carnival sooner or later.

Based on your signature you were on a Carnival Splendor cruise 8 years ago and a Celebrity cruise last year. Your observations are from 2 or 3 days on your Carnival cruise and your few sea days on your Celebrity cruises.

Are you saying that based on your anecdotal comparison, Carnival should change a major policy and by doing so they will magically see a tremendous increase in casino revenue that they never considered?

Each cruise line does what they do to satisfy the majority of it's customers. Carnival does not have to change it's policies based on what Celebrity is doing just as Princess doesn't need to do what Norwegian does and Royal Caribbean doesn't have to do what Holland America does and Oceania doesn't have to do what Azamara does and so on...

Agree. Carnival will do whatever it takes to satisfy its shareholders. The casinos have to be one of its biggest moneymakers. And I'm sure Carnival is doing perpetual studies on smoking and the effects on the casinos (whether the smoking policy scares away the smokers.)

I don't know of many smoke-free casinos. So I'm assuming most casinos on-board allows smoking.

Numerous scientific studies, both qualitative and quantitative have borne out not only a high correlation between smoking and gambling, but also between addictive smoking and addictive gambling. It's so obvious to a casual observer as well, so I can't imagine Carnival would kill a cash cow like allowing smoking in the casino. And you can't blame the smokers, they already have the early grueling death looming so give them a break. I blame Carnival for not introducing newer generation smoke eaters like others have said. As someone who watched his mom die a horrible, slow, painful death after being diagnosed with stage 3 lung cancer, just in case someone out there just needs to hear it one more time... STOP SMOKING, the life you save will be your own.

Killing the cash cow argument does not hold water. Other major cruise lines are doing just fine profitability speaking with non-smoking casinos.

And you are free to cruise on those other lines as you see fit. I love these people, research your cruise 1st if you hate smoking anywhere inside make sure you choose a appropriate cruise line, don't go into the casino smell smoke and come on here all whiny, you had a choice you made it now live with it.

Actually, I am basing my thoughts on several Celebrity cruises, including a Trans Atlantic and a recent Hawaii cruise on Miracle with 8 sea days. Even the crew members at the Future Cruises Desk, right outside the casino hated it. Why is so much space dedicated for so small a percentage, but a very vocal percentage of people? Flame proof suit back on...

So much space? Uh, yeah. Keep sailing Celebrity to gain that massive amount of indoor space free of smoke.

Methinks you just need a purpose for the flameproof suit you continue proudly donning. Wear it in good health.

Another smoking thread? Believe it or not millions of people still smoke, and when it comes to the casino and smoking its like two peas in a pod for some. You cant please everybody. Let them smoke all they want, their spending the money in there and let them be. Some of these people complaining about smoke really need to find something else to complain about.

There are cruisers that step aboard a ship and don't care where it's going, who won the hairy chest contest or what night is formal. They come aboard the ship to gamble, drink and enjoy a few days off. They also represent a remarkable amount of money for Carnival and other cruise lines.

This isn't rocket science; those gamblers and their smoking habits represent a ton of cash, and that along with those that spend money in the spa, order drinks, etc help keep the cost down for the cost of a cabin afloat.

Don't believe me? Look at the cost of a Disney cruise, those mouse eared vacations don't have a casino.

After 31 cruises I've never seen a empty casino on sea days. Carnival is playing to their market, and it's doubtful they will change.

Same thing with NCL. Look at pricing for their "casino-less" 7 night Pride Of America 7 night Hawaii sailings.

Combined with the fact that it's US flagged with an American crew, the pricing is way, way higher, almost double per person, than a typical 7 night cruise on NCL's other ships with it's casinos.

I am all for people smoking if they wish, but unfortunately when they smoke indoors their enjoyment effects others with non enjoyment and potentially hazardous circumstances. Not to mention I have seen numerous smokers just drop their cigarettes on the floors potentially being a fire hazard on a floating island... I think smokers should be able to smoke but that smoke should not effect other people. Smoking is not a right but a luxury habit. Ohio has smoke free casinos and they do just fine. They have an outdoor sections where people that smoke can play and smoke on a covered patio. It's so nice to enjoy fresh air and play without risk of second hand smoke causing cancer and stinky smoke infested clothes.

Just my opinion.

I will stand behind the shield with you, im a former smoker who has learned just how offensive my habit was. I fully respect its someones choice to smoke, its not their right to inflict it on me. I also know its the minority of smokers who chain smoke or blow it all over the table, most try to be considerate of others at the tables or slots.

I take exception to the comments if you don't like it sail some other company, Carnival would disagree since the majority of the people over all are non smokers, as are the majority of players. If only people playing smoked in the casino there were be much less of a problem, its the non players hanging out their to smoke that cloud up the space.

Its like most things, the majority of young people are smarter they I was and don't start and at some point the pressure of consumers and go smoke free indoors.
