London Question

When we went to London we stayed at the Doubletree, Kensington - expensive and not worth it. If I returned to London I'd stay in a cheaper hotel, even if it was a bit further out, as you can always take the London tube to get where you want to go. It's a very clean, quick and convenient way to travel throughout the city.

Live in London and hotels are over priced here as are public transport prices. A tough one to recommend as London is vast, but if you want west London look at EarlsCourt/Hammersmith then use Piccadilly Line to move about from west to central London, close to the South Kensington Museums and Harrods.

Could also use South West Trains in and out of Putney or Wimbledon. You could be in Waterloo, the London eye very quickly and also out to Hampton Court.

Use similar principles for North or East London to choose where to stay and that depends on your own budget and also where you want to visit during your stay. The only thing currently is Avoid South London as there are ongoing train strikes down that part of town.

It has often been said London's number 11 bus is very good for a cheap (£1.50) sightseeing bus tour.

Also check out #14 and #24 if your interested in riding the buses. A day pass costs £4.50, very cheap but the traffic might be a problem.... A must do is ride over Waterloo bridge for the best views of London via the River.

We stayed in The Savoy and walked everywhere.

very posh, not checked but my guess would be rooms start at £350 pp. But could be a lot more... but yes, very central and of course walkable  pretty much perfect location for pre/post cruises due to its proximity to Waterloo and the train down to Southampton....

Use Google to find maps of the London Tube and Bus routes- then print. When searching for a hotel the maps are a great help in finding ones close to transportation.

We stay near King's Cross at a Comfort Inn. Good price and with the buses and tube you can get anywhere easily. You might want to look near Waterloo Station to save time traveling back and forth to Southampton.

The hop-on-hop-off red double-decker buses are a great way to see and learn about London with limited time. We per-purchaced our tickets which even included a boat ride on the Thames.

Don't know when you're going but be aware - Changes to Waterloo train services in summer 2017 due to upgrading the station.

The Aloft London Excel at Royal Victoria Dock is clean and reasonable. Note that there is nothing in the immediate area. It does require using Tube and Docklands Rail. Get a "Pass" and you will do just fine.

We found the Hotel Ibis at Euston Station very basic but comfortable. Room about the size of cruise cabin (not cruise suite) but price was really good for London. Walking distance (through University College grounds) to British Museum. Buses to everywhere at the train station next door. I think there was a tube station there too although with a wheelchair we could not use it (no elevators at most stops).

Check out the Premier Inn hotels. We have stayed at one of these in Dublin and loved it. Check out their website--you will find these hotels all over London. They are very reasonable (anywhere between $80 US and $150 US, depending on location). They are Scandinavian style, very clean, great beds, wonderful bathrooms, and most offer a restaurant and bar area with really good food and service. The one in Dublin was near the airport and had a shuttle service. Check out what these might offer.

Take a good look at VRBo.com for accomodations. Chelsea, Kensington or above Kensington Park or Bayswater are good locations for walking or riding the tube.

In Europe we book twin bed rooms - they're normally bigger rooms than regulars. Also, when a room description over there says double it's not always possible to tell if it's a true American size double (which would be very cozy sleeping) - thus our requests for twin beds.:D

Be sure the room will be air conditioned - not all of them are.

Somebody above mentioned Ibis hotels. They are very basic but like the poster said very reasonable . We stayed in them in Amsterdam, Edinburgh and Southampton. We spent very little time in the rooms so it was sufficient for our needs.

I agree with another cruiser who suggested Premier Inn....we stayed at the Premier Inn at County Hall and it was great! We were right there at the London Eye, and the HOHO bus stop is right there at County Hall as well. The room was clean, and quite large by European standards. We arrived early and were able to leave our luggage in their locked luggage room and do some sightseeing prior to actually getting into our room. It's also very close to Paddington tube station which allows you to use the underground for your transportation, as the underground is extensive and practical. We love London and the Premier was probably our favorite hotel in the several visits we've had to London!

Try the Lime Tree Hotel. Boutique style, 25 rooms in upscale Belgravia. Within walking distance to Victoria station as well as the coach station nearby. We took the ship transfers from Southampton to the coach station and it could not have been easier.

Lovely helpful staff. We would go back!

County Hall is the perfect location for seeing Parliment, Westminster Abbey, St James Park, Buckingham Palace & all the sights in that area. Also good tube connection to West End. We didn't stay at Premier Inn, but splurged and stayed at the Marriott County Hall with view of Big Ben. Got a good price as it is too expensive for us to stay there on upcoming trip. But location is excellent. We know London quite well and I considered the area one of the most scenic to stay at other than around Tower Bridge. Go for it. Also, ask your concierge to arrange for tickets for London Eye. That way you don't have to stand in line to buy. Lots of tourists out in the bridge over the Thames late at night photographing Parliament.

We always stay out by Kensington Palace, and there are two underground stations there--Bayswater and Kensington. The area is very yuppie, and there's a great pub scene. With an underground junction, you can get to anywhere in town quickly and efficiently.

We usually book rooms on Booking.com--filtering from low price to high. Then we look for properties that have customer ratings substantially higher than others in the same price range. We've never been dissatisfied. They're showing 90 properties under "Bayswater" and 140 properties under "Kensington".

We stayed at the Park Plaza Westminster Bridge; over our usual budget but great location, more or less across the street from Waterloo Station which we walked to the hotel from quite easily even with our luggage. We were booked there one night as part of a Globus tour, so decided to stay in the same place for our extra night.

But I recall that Booking.com had a hotel very close to the Plaza for somewhat less cost, but we went with the Plaza for convenience to not have to change hotels after one night. It was about $360/night, double room. But it was very nice, huge breakfast, excellent service, places to eat nearby and so much of what we wanted to see so nearby too, so the extra money worked well for us. Not sure I'd want to stay there 3 nights, I'd probably take another look for something less expensive in the area.

We always stay at the Chesterfield Mayfair. It is very close to the Green Park tube station which has 3 lines running through it. This makes sightseeing a breeze - no or fewer connections. Remember, as said above - London is huge so not one hotel is near everything. The Chesterfield Mayfair is very centrally located.
