Are there times when we have to tip extra besides what they charge us?

We always pre-pay the regular tips the cruise line charges, but we usually tip extra as well.

Our last cruise we gave our room steward an extra tip right up front, and we left more cash at the end of the cruise as we felt she did a really great job. But there have been cruises where we did not tip extra as we didn't feel they did a very good job, or we didn't have any special requests, etc. One time we had an aft stateroom and I asked our room steward for a lounger for the balcony, so I tipped him extra for that.

As far as other times to tip, DH will tip an extra dollar or two most times when he gets drinks at the bar, especially if he's ordering for more people than just himself, or if a drink takes extra time to make because of the ingredients involved, etc.

If we take excursions we generally tip the bus driver a little extra, and we tip the tour guide more too.

When I order room service breakfast I tip the delivery person a couple of dollars (more if I'm ordering for more people besides just myself).

Someone was telling me besides the $12.95 per person they charge you that you have to tip more. She said they paid $250 per person for tip.

Any help is appreciated

Your math does not make sense, 2 people on a 7 day cruise is less than $200.

You DO NOT have to tip anymore than what they are taking out already. I have never tipped my room steward extra as I haven't had a great one yet. They all do their job fine, but nothing spectacular where I think they deserve extra. Drinks already have tips added on whether that is through cheers or not. Only times I have tipped extra was room service, $1 a plate or so, and I tipped the bartenders I went to often or the ones that brought me drinks in the shows or on deck.

You are not required to tip any amount additional to your $12.95 pp p/day gratuity (in fact, that is technically not required). However, we normally will tip the following in addition:

  • Porters who take our luggage
  • Room service attendants
  • Bar servers if we are ordering multiple drinks or we receive extraordinary service
  • Room stewards if we receive extraordinary service
  • Excursion guides/drivers
  • Wheelchair attendants (if we use wc service)

Some people choose to tip Camp Carnival workers (we don't have kids).

Adding on to your list

Some will tip out casino dealers if they're winning.

Spa personnel for haircuts, massages etc

Room service is not included in the automatic gratuities. They recommend $1 per plate. Also they ask that you tip the luggage porter $1-2 per bag.

Agreed :D

We also tip the person who pushes DH's wheelchair on embarkation and disembarkation days.

We always leave the auto-tips on but if we get excellent, attentive service from others like the cabin steward, MDR staff or Lido staff that go above and beyond the norm we tip them extra cash the last night of the cruise. This extra is by no means required or even expected but it's something we're able to do at this time in our life so we do :D

On a Princess cruise we had the Worst Steward Afloat. Left autograts in place but wrote a scathing letter. Pulling the tips can make you look cheap. A letter follows them around, effecting their next contract, postings, time off etc.

You probably got the steward that we had two years ago ... I have to assume that he left Carnival and went to Princess :D:'):D:')

It is $12.95 per person, per day. That is all that is expected of you. You can, if you wish, tip others, such as room service, but it is NOT a requirement. If someone paid $250 per person in tips for a cruise I hope it was a really long cruise.

I always bring the pizza maker $ 5.00 or 10.00 at the end of the week as I am there every night, and its always the same person and they get so excited .

I always bring the lady at the coffee bar an extra tip because she makes my milkshakes for me :-)

We always give the room steward $20 on the first day, which is completely optional, obviously, but it works well for us. We just ask to keep the ice full and for a towel animal each night. It has always worked out very well. And then we tip extra at the end.

I have to say, we had the BEST steward EVER last June on Oasis. I really am kicking myself that I don't remember his name, but he was from Jamaica, and was the sweetest person EVER!!! Always singing to us, waving in the hallway, chatting with us whenever he saw us. My daughter got a REALLY BAD sunburn on day two. He left extra cream on the dresser for her and checked in with us a couple of times to see how she was doing. This guy was the BOMB!!!!!

He got a REALLY nice tip on the last day, and was SO appreciative!!!!

At some ports, the porters have a special line during debarkation. If the line is long, then we will use a porter to get out sooner, and we tip $10. Also, we tip the valet if we use valet parking at the Port of Tampa.

But if you are willing to park your own car at the port, or better yet, have a friend drop you at the port, carry your own luggage, and do not use room service, you could get away with just paying the auto tips. All depends on your own preferences.
