Metal detectors

I know I need a card from my surgeon to fly, but we are driving to the port. I have a decent amount of metal in my leg from an accident last year. Do I need to get anything for the cruise? I was warned I will set of a metal detector, and would like to avoid hassles.

Just explain it to security personnel and like at an airport you may get secondary screening.

I have had 2 knee replacements and set off the detectors EVERY time. It has become part of the game to "assume the position" for them to manually scan me. If I am wearing shorts I point to the scars on my knees....

Hubby has a pacemaker and can't be "wanded"....so he simply requests a hand search...that's all you need to do! He can't go thru a "metal detector" either....so just ask for the hand search from the get-go.

 

Same routine for boarding the ship...and after the 1st port day, they are unlikely to search you again...hubby was always just waved thru!

Thank you. I have 2 large scars running up 4 inches from my ankle. I haven't done any real traveling since this happened. I may ask for the card or whatever from the doctor to be safe.

Just as an FYI, it doesn't matter WHAT kind of card you have from your doctor...TSA is not supposed to ask for (or demand) one. Reason being, a card like that can be forged or made up on a computer, and as such, holds no water with them.

Just tell them as you are going to go through security. They will tell you to walk through and then they will wand you. They might ask to pat down your ankle. Just be upfront about it, they are used to it.

My wife and I had double Knee Replacement and they pull you off to the side everytime you get back on the ship. They will check you with a wand and send you on your way.

Tons of people travel with metal in their bodies. This is nothing new to TSA or security at the ports. They have secondary screening that will clear you if you set a detector off. Just plan on things taking a little extra time than usual.

Thank you. I knew this wasn't something new to them. I just want to make things go as smoothly as possible. I hate the idea of slowing down a line.

My daughter has metal screws on her feet and ankle. She shows her card and directed at once for the secondary screening.

DW has a pace maker and she gets hand searched every time we get back on board

my DH has both knees replaced. we have traveled alot and he just tells them when we enter the security area before we get to the detectors. NO card is needed. Be patient and friendly and TSA will treat you respectfully.

I have multiple screws and a single plate in my L arm and I've never had an issue at the port.

Are you sure you will set off the metal detectors? I have a plate, pins and screws in my left ankle and I haven't had a machine "ding" yet.

I have 2 long plates and 15+ bolts in my leg, including bolts that go through both bones. It took 5 hours for them to put my leg back together. My surgeon warned me, it would set off metal detectors. If somehow it doesn't, great, but I wanted to be prepared.
