Credit Card and Room Safe

Recommended Posts

Dangit! You mean to tell me we've participated in 7 pages of conversation with over 120 comments for nothing? ;p So wait, why was I swiping my card across the front of the safe?

That's because you were swiping your card to pay to use the electricity :'). Don't worry, they got me on 12 out of my 13 Carnival Cruises too! ;p

And here I thought my wife turned the lights off to be romantic. All along it was because I was swiping an old Walmart gift card with 17 cents left on it.

Think about this for a second. Your sail and sign card opens your cabin door, so does your room stewards.:o

Your card is different. It only opens your door. The steward's key opens all the doors.

If you believe in the tooth fairy and the Easter Bunny then you will be comfortable leaving valuables in a hotel room safe. Housekeepers and Maintenance have devices that allow any safe to be opened in seconds. While touted to be secure, they are as effective as a wee lock on a suitcase zipper.

I leave my valuables at home.

It's my understanding that only security has the ability to open them. The safes are secure enough for minor valuables but I wouldn't store the Hope diamond in one (presupposing that I owned the Hope diamond in the first place).

I had to have my safe opened a few times and the room steward could not do it. They had to call Head of Housekeeping. Each time I had to be present and sign a log that had the date and time it was opened. They were the only ones with the "Master Card" if you will. I don't carry valuables with me on a cruise but I do put my money and Passport in there. It's more secure than leaving it laying around and I'm comfortable that it's secure enough.

Plus should you miss the ship the safe is where they're going to look for your passports in order to leave them with the port agent (at least that is what conventional wisdom tells us).

Correct....two separate codes. The one isolated to that door and the master code. Either card will open the door but that master code would not be a match for the one used to close the safe, they are different.

If you go to a casino and get their players card, ask for 2...they will be duplicate. Some of the grocery store loyalty cards come with 2 duplicate cards. Then you have 2 people that can access the safe. Just check them when you first activate the safe. I keep a couple of old casino cards in my cruise travel accessories.

Just a note....keeping valuables in your suitcase isn't necessarily going to keep anyone out of it. Even with a lock, a ballpoint pen can be used to gain entry.

Most minor theft is a crime of convenience. Just don't make it easy or convenient for theft to occur. And don't jump to conclusions that it was theft. Be very sure before you start the accusations.

I use the hotel card you use to unlock your hotel room door with. I carry a few with me and use one for the safe and one to keep the lights on instead of a sign and sail card. I leave it in the vanity drawer and no one ever bothers it. It is the biggest pain to be getting ready and the one who leaves first cuts the lights off with them when they leave with their sign and sail card. Just remember to put it away when you leave your room, I had one confiscated once by the room steward for leaving the lights on when no one is there so that's why I carry a few extra!

My room steward put one of his own in it to replace the folded up paper I put in when I first got into the cabin. I didn't have a chance to get out my old gift card. He said paper was a fire hazard. It stayed in the entire time.

Are you sure it was confiscated and not just taken by mistake? The room attendants have to put a card in there to turn on the lights as well, when they leave it's habit to just yank it out on the way. He might find it in his pocket later and not have any idea where he got it.

My cabinmate came up with a perfect card. We used a casno players club card that she had 2 of. They are free and you can get as many as you wish. So we each hold on to a card and both will open the safe.

They also come in handy for the Vista where the lights go off in your cabin key isn't in the slot near the door. I did notice on the Vista you created your own passcode for the safe and didn't use a card.

You don't have to use a credit card to open and lock a safe. I take an used gift card (Walmart, Target, etc.) to open and lock the safe. I then hide this under my clothes.

I pre-punch an old gift card at home and then hang it on my lanyard with my Sail and Sign card. That way I don't have to carry anything else around.

If I am off somewhere without my husband and I know that he will need to use the safe, I slip the card off the lanyard and put it in the inside pocket of his sport coat.

I am not a fan of when the stewards clean your cabin and leave your door open ..you show up and the steward is 7 cabins down with all the doors open. ANYONE could go into your cabin! I've seen kids run into cabins open like that and come running out " Mommy that's not our room" . I just don't want my cabin left like that. I have in the past asked them please only open my cabin when you are cleaning and don't leave my cabin door open. I don't think it's paranoid I just feel like if you don't leave yourself open for someone to take your things then you take steps to make sure they don't. I typically use an old fast food gift card for the safe. I don't want my CC's or Sign and Sail jacked up so I don't use them.
