Less Crowding During Self Walk Off

Hope you had a great time! Are you saying that those in haven are escorted off the ship and Through a separate customs line?

I thought once off the ship you were in the same boat (pun not intended) as everyone else. If customs is backed up nothing you can do but wait.

Haven often ends up in the porter customs line, which means you can debark and get through customs very quickly.

It is often just a matter of showing your suite/haven keycard to the staff along the way and you are shown how to bypass the lines.

I decided to get off the ship Friday, 6/2nd early instead of trying to get off as late as possible. The man at the checkpoint who swiped my card for the last time asked me 4 or 5 times if the luggage I carried was ALL my luggage. No more? Nothing? That's all of it? Are you sure? Yes Yes YES YES!

Also, I do not remember going through Xray coming back into Miami. Why is that? The line through customs was short and fast. Although, again, was questioned .... "you're traveling alone? No one else? No BFF or Husband? Just you? NO NO NO & Yes!

Being retired, Catherine and I will try to help with this conundrum.

When we arrive in NYC from Southampton on the inaugural transatlantic next year,

we will try to be the last ones off the NCL Bliss.

See no future, pay no rent,

All the money's gone.

Any jobber got the sack

Monday morning, turning back

Yellow taxi slow, nowhere to go.

But oh, that magic feeling, nowhere to go...

Oh, that magic feeling

Nowhere to go, nowhere to go."

I'm with you! I never understand why people are so desperate to end their vacation.

Tunaman2011....... my exact thoughts. On a recent Escape Cruise I was meet by a huge group of people waiting on deck 13 waiting for an elevator. Each person had a huge suitcase and were all complaining that they couldn't get an elevator. Walk off suitcases should be limited to the size of an airplane carry on. Larger suitcases should be put out the night before.

A much more sensible limit would be a self imposed one of 'how much luggage can I easily handle'. We travel with large suitcases but my husband is physically capable of carrying both down the stairs himself if neccessary, which we would do if there was a queue for the lifts rather than standing there complaining. If someone is not capable of carrying their own luggage, then yes they should put them out the night before.

As for why people are desperate to get off the ship early... perhaps they are not ending their vacation as soon as possible, but just keen to start the next part of it! After our Escape cruise we have two days in Miami so I will be wanting to disembark around 8am to make the most of them.

I think I am always off the ship by 8: am doing self walk-off. I hope this isn't on the Epic next month since my travel plans were planned expecting I can be off the ship by 7 in Rome.

I would be interested in knowing what time you do actually walk off the Epic in Civitavecchia. My airline just changed my return flight in October off the Epic to 11:15 AM so am wondering if I can make it to FCO airport by 8:15AM

  • 4 weeks later...

So, a general question, not specific to any particular ship/cruise. If my group is in no hurry to get off the ship, what's our best strategy. Is it ok to sit around and wait for the crowd to thin out? We will be doing self assist

Sure. They want everyone out of the rooms by 8:00-8:30. Go have a nice breakfast. All ashore is 10 am. They need to get to a zero count and be ready to start boarding the next cruise around 11 am.

So the colored tag thing was a bit confusing to me- someone who just wanted to walk off whenever I wanted and could roll my own bag. On the Sun I spoke to a couple different people at Guest Services about this. They had told me that I didn't need a tag at all since I was just taking it down myself. You basically just get to the floor that you are getting off the ship at and go with the next group, but maybe it was different for me since we embarked in the U.S. with no customs. It was a brief process. I stood in line with a group maybe for 5-10 minutes and just walked right off the ship.

Because you assume it's the end of their vacation, not the beginning of the next phase. We like to be among the first off the ship, because we don't want to waste 1/2 day in a customs lineup, or waiting for luggage in a baggage hall. Off the ship, out the door...waiting taxis, and on the next part of the adventure.

We have done well in the past walking off very early, with the VIP groups. We each have one good-size Roller case with a carry-on bag hanging very low off the handle as a counterweight, so there is no load at all on the handle. ( Have seen flight crews do that). With one hand for pulling the case we still have one hand free to hold our passports, etc. Easy peasy.

That's what I don't get either lol. Many people I met had to actually go to work the next day and a flight within a few hours of getting off the ship. Others have morning excursions. I had one that had a pick up at 8:15 so I wanted to make sure I was off the boat by 7:45 to get it. Had I had no planned excursion, I would have tried to have been one of the last to have gotten off. Also if there are mainly older people on the cruise, that takes up time too so it might be better to get off ASAP.

And I am with you.

However, I took a recent look at flights, and told me DW we could fly out of NYC at noon ,

or the next one at 4 pm.

"The one who must be obeyed" says we are taking the noon flight.

So that's that.:D

And so if we want to have our large pieces taken away the night before can we still take our time getting off the ship on debarkation day?

very much so

we are now platinum so entitled to be off the ship as early as we want

However we are usually one of the last off having left our cases out night before

we have a leisurely breakfast and leave about 9.30 and our cases are waiting for us in the area closest to exit from port

It's usually very easy to spot them as most people have collected them by then lol

You pick a color tag with a disembarkation time that matches what you want to do. If you want to take your time, pick a late time and avoid the craziness.

Seems like it would be complicated to go have a nice breakfast if you have all that luggage to walk off with. We will be 4 adults, each with 2 pieces of luggage. That's 8 pieces of luggage to take into the restaurant. hmm!
