Catherine Janaway Posted July 26, 2017 #3 Share Posted July 26, 2017 I DO NOT want to start a debate about tipping, I am happy to tip for service so don't want to get into that debate, My understanding was that on P & O, unless other arrangements have been made, a flat fee of £6 pp pd was deducted for tips -again I have no problem with this. When would I consider additional tips? I appreciate that at the end of the cruise some people may leave extra as they feel the service has been exceptional, again I have no problem with this, Would there be times throughout the cruise where tips would be given? I hadn't factored this into my planning and really intended to use very little cash. Again I really want information as opposed to anyone telling me who I should or shouldn't tip. mandylennon Posted July 26, 2017 #4 Share Posted July 26, 2017 We usually give British pounds and keep the Euros for another trip, but any currency is appreciated by the staff.

I know tipping seems to become very emotive on any forum and I wanted to make sure I was clear that I wanted info about 'other tipping' as opposed whether too or not. Not aimed at you at all and I apologise if you thought it was.

I don't like the debate abut tips either and I won't go into the reasons why I tip what I do. However, in answer to the question about what extra tips we give in cash as w go along, we tip room service every time we use them, we often tip our steward for little things they do as we go along and if we eat in a select restaurant such as the beach House or Glass House
janny444 Posted July 26, 2017 Author #10 Share Posted July 26, 2017 Thank you for the answers.....it was solely a question about the currency not who we tip or why we tip or when we tip extra

davecttr Posted July 26, 2017 #13 Share Posted July 26, 2017 Only slightly off topic. On xmas cruises I deliver a shopping bag of chocs to the ladies in the casino which are always very welcome. I can't understand why they don't put on weight but apparently all those chocs they get can be swapped for other stuff. Except one young lady who preferred Pringles and later in the year had changed to Nutella :D

Florry Posted July 26, 2017 #15 Share Posted July 26, 2017 If chocolate was a currency I would be permanently broke!! ;p If I'd known chocolate was the currency I'd have applied for a job to work onboard! Regarding your earlier question we also tip room service the only other time we consider tipping extra is the Butler if we have one, but we don't always tip him (never had a woman). It's really sad when people are frightened to ask a question because of the risk of things turning into a fight - so as others have said this is intended as giving factual info to offer genuine help and not an invitation for one of those awful threads. kerryincork Posted July 27, 2017 #18 Share Posted July 27, 2017 For budgeting they auto add tips to bar bills & the spa on most ships. But now I think about it the tips might be included in the price of drinks! Sent from my SM-N910F using Forums mobile app

Sent from my XT1032 using Forums mobile app Correct, the service charge is rolled into the price of the drink and you don't see it on the bill. I was told it is 12% and funds the bar staffs commission. This is why the waiters prefer a busy bar because they earn more money and why the service in the coffee bar is so awful because they earn little commission. Mrs Tinkywinky Posted July 27, 2017 #22 Share Posted July 27, 2017 Is it acceptable to give any extra tips ....cabin steward etc....in Euros? Yes but it could depend on where you are going. As we went to the Baltic and had 5 different currencies but paid mainly on shore with credit cards , extra tips tended to be in £s

jody75 Posted July 29, 2017 #24 Share Posted July 29, 2017 P&O have increased their seat reservation charge by 25%, increased their gratuities by 10% after I booked the cruise. These stealth charges are unacceptable, the discretionary auto tips is under my control so I am definitely considering cancelling.
