tdquillen Posted September 22, 2017 #1 Share Posted September 22, 2017 I've read where many of the cruise ports are re-opening sooner than expected. However, of the ports that are open or soon to be open; what are their BEACHES like? My wife and I love the beaches, so our concern is our cruise ship may stop at an open port but the beaches have washed away. Any thoughts?
Rare LHT28 Posted September 22, 2017 #2 Share Posted September 22, 2017 Ask on the ports of Call forum for each port usually some locals post there If cruises have not stopped there since the storms not many will know the conditions yet
Krazy Kruizers Posted September 22, 2017 #3 Share Posted September 22, 2017 I would count on there being some or a lot of beach erosion.
Kamloops50 Posted September 22, 2017 #4 Share Posted September 22, 2017 In St Marteen the beach by the airport (Maho ?) has lost all its sand . I'd be surprised if other beaches haven't lose a lot of sand.
paul929207 Posted September 22, 2017 #5 Share Posted September 22, 2017 There is likely lots of waste on the beaches, especially branches and larger pieces of trees
Rare Keith1010 Posted September 22, 2017 #6 Share Posted September 22, 2017 The reality is very few people would know unless locals can help you. Google is your friend. I would google and as mentioned you can check the ports of call board. Keith
cb at sea Posted September 22, 2017 #7 Share Posted September 22, 2017 Some beaches get sand deposited...while others have it stripped away....works both ways!
slidergirl Posted September 22, 2017 #8 Share Posted September 22, 2017 I'd be afraid to go to any beach or in water at this point. Think of all the garbage and sewage from the storm surges. And, at this point, I'll bet that local authorities are thinking more about getting drinking water, first aid, restoring electricity and emergency housing for their locals than cleaning a beach for cruisers. Sorry. If you have family or friends trying to exist on one of the affected islands, you might understand my position.

Sorry. If you have family or friends trying to exist on one of the affected islands, you might understand my position. Exactly, how much beach erosion may have occurred is so insignificant in view of the utter destruction these islands and the people have suffered. You likely will not get info for a while. Locals havefar more important things to do than asses how deep the beach now is. . none of us have been to the islands this week (excedept for Despegue who was doing aid work., so not likely any of us can share anything useful ab out beaches at this point. If you must have pristtine beaches, why not consider sailing to Hawaii? Edited September 22, 2017 by sail7seas

Mother nature will have the beaches fixed a lot sooner than people will have the island's infrastructure fixed.

OP, you didn't mention when your cruise is. Obviously the furrther out it is,the ertter chance they will have been ab le to accomplish some cleanup... slidergirl Posted September 23, 2017 #13 Share Posted September 23, 2017 If you must go to a beach and go into the water, please see your usual medical provider and be sure you are up to date on tetanus and the Hep A/B vaccines!!!!!
