Should Carnival Try Again?

I know from experience that a ship billed as full may not be so in actuality...specifically, one instance where the ship actually sailed 70% full. But they were "full."

People smoke in casinos. Non-Smoking Casinos don't work

Here in NY Resortsworld and Jake's 58 are pulling in millions - even with no smoking allowed. It is been more than a decade since Carnival tried a no-smoking ship (Paradise). Times have changed. Maybe they should offer a non-smoking cruise and see how it sells.

My wife and I don't gamble on the ship because I'm allergic to cigarette smoke (cigars / pipes don't bother me). Not sure how many smokers get severely nauseous and throw up due to fresh air? There are many people on the ships that we talk to that would like to gamble but can't due to the allergies or sensitivities to smoke. And guess what, we still cruise. We go to local land based casinos that ban smoking and at times it's hard to find a place to sit due to all the people gambling and not smoking.

Wait you aren’t allowed to smoke in any casino in New York City. In a city of 8.5million and it’s illegal. Yeah you’ll make money. Put a smoking casino next door and then compare.

Believe it or not only around 15% of US citizens smoke still.

 

There needs to be a major shift in viewpoints of being worried to alienate 15% of the population while telling the other 85% to "just deal with it" because of such.

 

Casino's (to use just one example) that don't allow smoking anymore are still doing just fine because the huge majority of the population consists of non smokers. It's simple.

 

To the contrary of your suggestion above, I would venture to guess that 2 casinos, next to each other, on full of a thick white haze to the floor, the other without any at all....that the non smoking casino would actually be significantly busier. 10 or 15 years ago they might have been a wash, but times have changed.

If you listen closely, it sounds like thousands of people all talking at once, but if you look around, everyone is intently playing and hardly anyone is actually talking.

I was tongue in cheek with my "floor to ceiling" comment, but my overriding point is that to a huge portion of non smokers..any smoke filled indoor space is a turn off. Even the most awesome ventilation system isn't going to make it appealing to many non smokers as the smell and smoke are unavoidable.

 

I never set foot in a casino before smoking was banned in them here.

 

And I avoid the ship casinos as well for the same reason. Even 10 or 15 minutes in a smoky environment leaves me with a headache and a sore throat.

Harrah's Cherokee, NC - Can't go near the table games without a gasmask. Also, they have a small non-smoking area in the machine section that may as well not exist for all the drifting smoke.

And if you get the entire United States to do that, people will probably accept it on cruise ships sailing out of the United States.

When I visit my folks in Northern Idaho, we usually go to the Casino near Bonners Ferry, which gets lots of Canadian visitors. There are 3 Casino areas, enclosed with glass walls. People go to area they are comfortable with.

 

I'd love to see Carnival experiment with whatever solution would work. Meaning a huge reduction in ciggie choking smoke.

Do those glass walls go to the ceiling? I ask because my casino has a glass wall...but it’s only 6-7 feet high. It’s there to keep the kids out because it’s surrounded by family restaurants...and unlike a cruise ship...it’s a six figure fine if anyone under 21 is caught on the casino floor... the wall is glass so people can see in/out...it’s not a smoke control system.

If I go to the casino at all, I don't spend much time in there because of the smoke, most of the time I don't like to walk thru the casino because of the smoke. The ones that really enjoy casinos will continue to go even if they can't smoke. And the ones that don't smoke will go more often and stay longer.

I have no idea where you can study the numbers, but here are some facts. Celebrity is offering all the freebies to get one to sail on their ships. The bdm that represents the northeast told me they are light in sales and have been. Lately they having been coming in mostly cheaper than most other cruiselines. I don’t want to steal the thread from going off topic any more tho......

I can't stand the cigarette smoke but have come to realize it's a reality if I want to gamble . Going to land based casinos, they do have the smoke free machines wayyyyy in the back of the casino, and they don't have table games and everything back there, so unless you play slots only, you have to go to the smoking area to play. We have been in Vegas at times and again at the tables playing or watching and the smoke is unbearable. To me it's the same on the ship or on land, inhaling smoke is bothersome and not tolerated well in large quantities. I really wonder what would happen to the rates if they didn't have gambling smokers filling ships. It's a tricky subject some talk about other lines that have done it with success but they didn't talk about the impact on the rates of the cruises and if the cruise lines have to come up with other ways to supplement their revenue if not for these said people. I had to leave the nightclub on my last cruise because I got a whiff of someone's cigarette smoke and got extremely choked up and couldn't stop coughing. The casino has not been so bad for me to have to leave but it is very noticeable the smoke smell and fumes .

Actually it is a fact. We talk to him often when we have cruisers for small gifts and add ons. It’s coming from mgt on the status of the business. The other facts are looking at sailings and what they are throwing in as “freebies”. These are incentives to boost sales for rooms that they would otherwise have to discount to fill. I could back these up with going to some of their ships and do sample bookings and check and count how many open rooms compared to the competition, but it’s Sunday night. You can decide what you want from this.......
