JerseyMom Posted January 4, 2018 #5 Share Posted January 4, 2018 (edited) There is a message on the NCL website that the Breakaway will be delayed coming into NYC tomorrow. A member on another site posted a few vids. Nothing major but sea spray and wind caused a few items to shift along with 10 degree list last night for 3 hours Just wanted to be sure things are ok and safe travels to all on board

No offense, but that's a bit irresponsible. Enjoy your cruise.
Jenlek Posted January 4, 2018 #11 Share Posted January 4, 2018 On the Breakaway now. It is indeed rocking and rolling and last night was a bit harrowing. Some staterooms had balcony doors that would not close or that blew out, including at least one Haven Suite. There is flooding on many floors including in La Cucina. Our balcony divider came off the ship wall and the railing and it banged all night against the window but fortunately did not break the window. We have been kept inside the ship since yesterday and the tenders at Great Stirrup Cay were cancelled so we didn't get that stop. There was some mention of diverting the ship by our concierge but he said the Captain had not made a decision. According to the navigation channel we are parallel with DC now so we haven't made much progress up the coast. We just did the disembarkation briefing and everything is on schedule. LrgPizza Posted January 4, 2018 #15 Share Posted January 4, 2018 Is the BREAKAWAY OK!!??? Can anyone on board comment!? Heard thru another person that someone on the BA right now is stating that the BREAKAWAY has damage coming up the coast!!?? How is asking if the ship has damage an alarm post. I simply asjed a question to see what i heard was plausible Simply a question I just copied what you posted, since you seem to have forgotten already. Don't act like that's the same thing as saying, "Did anyone happen to hear if Breakaway has been damaged at all?" What you did was try to use up all the exclamation points and question marks in order to stir up as much excitement as possible.See?
xriva Posted January 4, 2018 #16 Share Posted January 4, 2018 How is asking if the ship has damage an alarm post. I simply asjed a question to see what i heard was plausible Simply a question Because it implies that there is the real possibility of damage. A cruise ship in rough seas is a fairly regular occurrence, and one they are designed to handle. The passengers may not think so, but they are not mariners. (Ask a passenger what conditions are like, then ask one of the officers. You will probably get different answers.) So, “Does anyone know how long the Breakaway will be delayed?” is much less alarmist than “Is the BREAKAWAY OK!!??” which implies it isn’t. Also, a ship’s name is not in caps, generally. tgloersen Posted January 4, 2018 #17 Share Posted January 4, 2018 They have a few doors that won't close, definetly rough seas, but yah they are designed to handle this. And the reason for the delay is the captains discretion. I mean if i were captain i would not want to pilot that boat into NYC with 50MPH gusty winds. I would wait too. Rare All-ready2cruise Posted January 4, 2018 #18 Share Posted January 4, 2018 I hope everyone on the BA stays safe and that those leaving tomorrow make it to the ship safely and on time. I've cruised through a tropical storm which had very similar winds/seas and I'm pretty sure everything will be just fine. Good luck. This is the post on NCL.com for those who may have missed it: Weather Alert Winter Storm Grayson - January 4, 2018 at 10:00 AM (2:00 PM UTC) Due to winter storm Grayson, Norwegian Breakaway will have a delayed arrival into New York on Friday, January 5. HokiePoq Posted January 4, 2018 #19 Share Posted January 4, 2018 Blizzard conditions along the East Coast so it isn't surprising that there is some wind damage like in the tropical storm we went through on another ship some years ago. Sitting here on the coast watching it but didn't know it's name was Grayson. Hope all of you embarking get on smoothly tomorrow but it will be cold, snowy and windy in NYC as Grayson is moving north. I'd be more concerned if I was flying in later today or anytime tomorrow that I would make the ship than if the ship will make it into NYC. Hopefully OP and others are already in New York. Go away Grayson! Can't speak to whether the OP was alarmist or not, but when someone says "no offense", get ready for offense.
Jenlek Posted January 4, 2018 #20 Share Posted January 4, 2018 On schedule as in 8am?? Please stay safe and wish you all a smooth sailing home it's certainly not smooth but it has been an adventure! We were told by our concierge that he will escort us off the ship beginning at 7:45. of course, there is alot of time between now and then so things may change. I'll do my best to update if I learn anything different. Sent from my SM-G930T using Forums mobile app
boatseller Posted January 4, 2018 #21 Share Posted January 4, 2018 I recall after Anthem sailed into the storm, people carrying on about 'serious damage' because a planter had fallen over. Simply, a broken fixture is not damage.
chengkp75 Posted January 4, 2018 #22 Share Posted January 4, 2018 A member on another site posted a few vids. Nothing major but sea spray and wind caused a few items to shift along with 10 degree list last night for 3 hours Just wanted to be sure things are ok and safe travels to all on board All ships, especially those with large superstructures like cruise ships will experience "wind induced heel" or listing in high winds. This is natural, and it means the ship has heeled over to the point where the forces the ship exerts to right itself have matched the force of the wind on the exposed side of the superstructure. I would be surprised if it was 10 degrees, but it may have been. Unless it was confirmed by someone in the deck or engine departments, not just any old crew member, more likely it was that person's "feeling" as to how much the list was. Most people overestimate the degree of list or rolling to a significant amount. There is just so much liquid (fuel, potable water, ballast water) that can be transferred to correct wind heel. At least with the wind on one side, she was not fighting headwinds, and so could make better speed to get away from the storm.

Giantfan13 Posted January 4, 2018 #24 Share Posted January 4, 2018 We are also on the Breakaway tomorrow, but we are from Long Island and we just have to get into Manhattan tomorrow. We have received a phone call from NCL but not saying anything different than what is on their web site, delayed arrival and delayed embarkation, nothing further. Just from our roll call, several people had flights cancelled who were flying in, as airports are closed. Some traveling by bus and they are not getting in either, as roads are just too treacherous. So maybe a delayed boarding and leaving is a good thing for some. Still waiting to hear from NCL (they said 4PM) but nothing from them as of yet. ameeratrust Posted January 4, 2018 #25 Share Posted January 4, 2018 (edited) Just received this update: "Due to winter storm Grayson, Norwegian Breakaway will have a delayed arrival into New York on Friday, January 5. As a result, Norwegian Breakaway’s 14-day cruise that was originally scheduled to depart on January 5 will now depart on Saturday, January 6 at 3 pm. Due to the ship’s late arrival on Friday and the ongoing weather situation, embarking guests are encouraged to arrive to the pier on Saturday morning; all guests must be onboard by 1 pm on January 6. Guests unable to adjust their travel plans are welcome to board on Friday evening, between 6 pm and 10 pm. The ship will now sail a slightly adjusted itinerary, which will be communicated to guests onboard. All guests will receive a refund of one day of their cruise fare, in the form of an onboard credit. We sincerely thank our guests for their understanding of this unexpected change due to the weather and apologize to our guests for any disruption to their schedule."
