Unfortunately, you can wear any darn thing you want and chances are they will let you in. I've seen everything from bib overalls to jogging suits and then there were times I have seen people turned away without a jacket from the MDR.

There's to much concern over irritating the customer or making a scene. I understand that there are folks that just don't want to pack a suit or sports coat. I get it. But if that's the case then they can also make the conscious decision to eat in the buffet or specialty restaurants that evening.

If the lady is going to the effort and pleasure of looking special that evening, then bring the jacket.

So, to answer the question, yeah you will probably get by without a jacket.

You won’t be turned away so technically it’s not “necessary” but on my cruises, you’d be in a very small minority.

 

It’s sad when the waitstaff is dressed better than the passengers.

Fortunately, neither a jacket nor a tie are required. Don't be bullied or shamed into thinking that you have to eat someplace other than the main dining room on formal nights; you don't. (That's just misinformation.)

I clearly states what is proper dress for formal night.

When formal nights are held, please observe the dress code in the Traditional Dining and Anytime Dining venues for the enjoyment of all our guests.

 

• Evening gowns and cocktail dresses for women
  
• Tuxedos, dinner jackets or dark suits with a tie for men

If you actually read what Princess describes as proper on formal nights, neither gowns or jackets are are an actual "requirement".

More & more people are cruising for relaxation without dragging along the formal clothing that was once necessary.

Casual dress is fine. What is listed on the website clearly states "recommended".

Those who want to dress formally have the option to do so.

It's your vacation, you paid for it, enjoy it and don't let anyone tell you what they want you to wear.

Not only a coat but a tie is not required as I have never worn either on a ship formal night. Dress pants can be dockers. Some of us have gone to short sleeved guayabera shirts which are most comfortable. Shoes can be athletic shoes or leather shoes but no flip flops for men.

kenorus, my husband will be in a dress shirt and tie for the first time in our many cruises. I'm confident that he (and you) will be admitted to the MDR without any problems and will be comfortable in your choice.

 

In our experience cruise attire has gotten more casual (or realistic, given luggage restrictions.) Enjoy your cruise!

More of theses types of shirts along with dress pants are becoming popular on Princess ever since jackets and ties have been waning.

This is not to say that people still don't dress up but as more people find out on previous cruises that dressing up is not a "requirement" they realize that just being dressed casually on formal nights makes it much easier & enjoyable and still be able to attend formal nights in the DR.

I just wish they’d be consistent. Once I was given static for having a nice tropical/casual short sleeved shirt. Five minutes later, a guy with a Columbia LONG SLEEVED fishing shirt was escorted in, no problem.

While I'm older, love seeing people dressed up, someone mentioning luggage that is what changed my routine. In the past I had my big suitcase plus a rolling folding garment bag, and now don't want to deal with 2 suitcases. As I mentioned before I never feel out of place with silky dressy slacks, and shiny sparkle tops. I take long cruises, never go to the Caribbean so I have not seen what some people mention for formal nights, but wouldn't care if I did! :)

I don't find the Caribbean to be much different than other places regarding dressing. Some people will always dress casually while others will dress up every night.

 

I've even given up on checking to see if the night is formal or not since I dress for myself and don't care what the others do.

Yeah his fishing shirt was mostly clean. Just a little Wahoo blood on one sleeve. :)

We just got off of the Coral. There was a sign at both dining room entrances

that stated "No shorts, no tank tops, no ball caps allowed". This was posted

every night. Many men wore ties on formal night but it was not required.

As I recall, people looked nice. I do not remember any jeans on formal night.

I would like to relate a story of how some people were very put out as they had a reservation in the Crown Grill and someone came dressed in shorts, sneakers, etc. Well it turns out that Princess had lost their luggage and it was ALL they had. They had made the reservation at the time of their booking and it was their anniversary. Maybe we should all stop being to quick to judge and just enjoy OUR OWN cruise. What someone does or does not wear is not going to affect my cruise!

I (a male) got turned away on casual night for wearing 3/4 pants. Four women ahead of me were escorted in, wearing their 3/4 pants. Were their hairy legs less beautiful than mine?
