Lanyard Question

My husband and I were wondering about lanyards and cards.

We will be taking the Dream in April and were about to order some Lanyards off Amazon with the plastic case. We were talking about using the cards for everything and he was wondering if we had to take the cards out of the plastic sleeve every time we needed to use them or if they had some sort of thing on the card that you could just lift up to be scanned while still in the plastic sleeve.

The reason we ask is if we needed to take it out, he would rather keep it in his wallet.

You'll have to take it out. They have to scan your card for various things, and you have to use it to open your cabin door.

You can get a lanyard when you check in -- I think you have to make a nominal donation to St Jude's -- and they will punch a hole in your card to attach it to the lanyard. You can use it like that without a problem.

your sail and sign card should have a hole punched in it when you receive it, if not the casino host can punch a hole in it and will give you a free plastic type lanyard, to me this is the easiest thing to do.. just clip in on your belt loop and stick the card in your pocket...

If you buy a lanyard, you can look for one that has a ring or a clip on the end, instead of a plastic sleeve... then you can just use the pre-punched hole to attach the card, hang it around your neck whenever you leave the room.

We brought a magnet clip that we hung on the wall near the light switch and got in the habit of hanging our lanyard there as soon as we walked in, then we would remember to grab it on the way out. Really convenient.

At times when we’ve gotten the casino lanyard, we’ll get rid of the coil. Attaching it to our belt loop. We also use the clip to make our card easier to find in our purses ashore.

If you are ordering a drink at a bar, the bartenders generally take your S&S card to the POS to swipe and enter the order. So you'd need to take it out to do that. And having it attached to the lanyard via a punched hole isn't any better in that case.

We're gonna take lanyards with pouches. I wear one all day at work, so it won't bother me. Not sure about my wife - she doesn't like lanyards, but may put up with it if it means not having to carry a purse or tuck it into a pocket, or worse, hand it to me to safeguard...

My recent sailing on the Fantasy my card was punched already when I got it. I took a lanyard with a clip on end, and just took lanyard off to give to them to swipe, or just pulled down to open my door. Plastic sleeve will get annoying quickly, and could fall out.

I use a lanyard with a clip on the end. Sometimes I take the card off the lanyard, but most times I just take it off my neck & hand it to them. It's long enough to drop inside my shirt when we go ashore or are not using it. It's just a nylon cord, so I can wear it in the pool & ocean as well. Really handy for poolside service - seems they just write the folio number down, but then again, it's been about 3 years since I've sailed Carnival.

Or you could go all out and make your lanyard stand out. My wife got a Vera Bradley one that is very noticeable and ones for the kids and I that literally scream Minnesota. I mean they say "MINNESOTA" in big block letters so everyone knows where we are from. lol. I like to wear mine like a wallet chain btw, with the end looped around a belt loop of my shorts or trunks and the card sitting inside my front pocket. Easy to take on and off once you've mastered it.

There are a limited number of lanyards available in the casino on Embarkation Day. You are not required to make a donation to St. Jude's, but you can if you want to. At several of the home ports, the S&S cards are already pre-punched. If not, you can have your card punched at Guest Services or the casino.

I keep it in my pocket/wallet. I am not very fond of flashing that I'm a tourist

Except for the staff, everybody on the ship is a tourist. Most people don't wear their lanyards when going ashore. I'm pretty sure the locals can tell who's a tourist and who isn't, even if you're not wearing a lanyard.

I think you'll find that having the plastic case will be a nuisance. Just get lanyards that have a clip on them that you can attach your card to.
