Back from first solo cruise

I'm back from my first ever solo cruise. I was on the Victory. My wife and I have different spring breaks so I went alone. It was just a 4 day, so I didn't get lonely. It was nice to relax and do what I wanted to do when I wanted to do it. My goal was to relax, rest, and do some writing. It all happened! I took all my meals on the Lido deck -- I never darkened the door of the dining room. Part of this is I've been on many Carnival cruises and can recite the menu by heart. I also didn't want to dress up nor did I want to be a table with others and have to make conversation. I'm not a recluse, but I really was trying to just get away. I did not go to any shows or events. Our two stops were in Key West and Cozumel. I did not get off the ship in Key West. In Cozumel, I went to Los Cinco Soles to get Mexican vanilla, Del Sol for a new pair of sunglasses, and a bar (forgot the name) for a couple of strawberry daquiris (they were so good the last time I was there, I had to go back).

 

It was nice having the ship almost to myself while in port.

 

It was interesting talking to other guys in the sauna about cruising alone. One guy said "how did you get your wife to let you come by yourself? Lucky you." Another guy said "I could never do that. I'd be scared I'd get lost in port." Other responses were "Aren't you bored?" Perhaps having grown up an only child, I was used to being alone (not lonely).

 

I'll be glad to answer any questions anyone has about the ship or cruising solo.

Good to hear you got away and actually relaxed. I will be going to Cozumel in September and I want to get Vanilla. Is the store close to port? I’ve been there a few times but never pay attention to the names.

Yes, Los Cinco Soles is in the port area. Their vanilla is very good and the real kind, not the fake stuff that causes cancer. I buy 1 liter bottles. We now have 3.5 1 liter bottles in the pantry!

Wow, I think that is awesome. I have three kids and a great husband, but I think sometimes, I'd just like some quiet. I would think you were able to find some quiet. My sister and I cruise together in the past few years because our husbands don't like cruising that much so we always have that quiet time, every few years or so. Got a sister cruise in a few weeks.:D

Glad you had a great time and got to relax and recharge! Solo travel is so peaceful. I travel solo very often, It's so refreshing and relaxing. It's interesting how many people cannot function on their own. Smh. I get asked a lot of questions too, most people are nice, others can be rude or ASSuming. I have enjoyed all my cruises, and roughly half of them have been solo cruises. Love those solo cruises for the same reasons you cite, as well, as love having the room/bathroom to my exclusive use!;)

Glad to hear you enjoyed your solo cruise! I love cruising solo. It is always interesting to hear about how others react to solo cruising. Every solo cruise it seems some people are envious of solo cruising while others just can't comprehend how enjoyable it is. It seems to come down to how much a person enjoys his/her own company and quiet time.

 

I was the youngest child in my family, and understand about being used to being alone. By the time I was old enough to think about it, I was the only one left at home.

 

What do you do with your Mexican vanilla? I always keep it on hand, and love to give it as gifts.

I was not on the ship during games (Mon-Thursday morning). But last year during bowl games, I watched the Orange Bowl in the Sports Bar.

You are correct-it is Mexican TBS, but all the movies were in English. I just got off the Dream and the only place to watch the basketball games was at the casino bar. Some days they has rows of chairs set up stadium style in front of the bar.

I'm single as single can be, so I live alone and travel alone. I travel all over the world. I love it!

 

Other than my first two cruises (where my mom and I went together), I have sailed solo, albeit only on themed cruises (specifically, Star Trek: The Cruise), where everyone has something in common (and I'm part of the global Trekkie family). I'm going on two craniofacial group cruises in the near future--on NCL Escape from NYC in November (Cher Crewz) and on Disney Fantasy in May 2019 with a craniofacial family group.

 

So far I haven't done a normal cruise (i.e. non-themed, non-group, just regular cruise, where I know no one else) all by myself yet, but someday I will.

That should read the problem cruising solo on Carnival is paying double.

I've sailed NFL and Celebrity for less than double.

My longest solo sail was a 10 day B2B with an 11 day both Journey on the Glory.

Glad you had a great time! I'm going on my first solo Carnival cruise in a few months and I'm really looking forward to it.
