Never saw a single dollar tipped on the MSC Seaside last week.

Well, I do tip on every cruise and because it may be a "custom" on MSC or discouraged (I don't believe that) doesn't mean I won't or others shouldn't. We weren't in Europe ......... I saw plenty of cash given last year and the year before. The bar staff wasn't "European" most of the time and they deserve tips like other bartenders on other lines. Perhaps the staff will quit and go elsewhere once they realize they aren't getting any extras. You can call it a "custom" , I'll call it being cheap. This was Miami, Jamaica, Mexico, and Caymens ...... not Europe. Perhaps some need to realize American customs here.

I believe there is a 15% gratuity added on to every drink bill.

Tipping is not the custom on MSC and is discouraged

Part of traveling is learning the customs of the place that you are visiting.

God knows that not everyone seems to realize that. Just saying....

Don’t make excuses for cheap!!

To claim that people sailing in the Caribbean should tip because you do and it's a US custom does not mean they should do it! If you think that is the right way then why should those from Europe have to pay for bottled water when you get it free ?

Tipping those SERVING you is just the right thing to do. It’s not about what continent you are from. It’s about acceptance of that service. Wow.

Tipping is discouraged by MSC as shown in the terms and conditions posted previously.

Wrong. Just because you are American and used to tip for everything does NOT make it the right thing to do.

In most other countrys the salary the employer pays covers everything,

In lots of restaurants in England you are offered the option to leave a tip or not when paying by card and some even add a 10% gratuity on your bill.

No, you're wrong. No one said you had to tip for everything and no one does. Tell us about the great salary your cabin steward makes away from his family and how he doesn't deserve an extra tip again .... Again, on the Seaside you're not in Europe and many of the staff are not European nor do most of them make what we would consider even a decent wage. Cheap is cheap. I'd rather bring smiles with some dollar bills vs. bringing excuses not to.

I take it then, when I cruise on an American cruise ship on a purely European cruise I can just leave the tipping out?

You logic is faulty.

Why are you ignoring what is shown in the MSC website re tipping being discouraged?

So do you tip the likes of bank clerks and shop assistants? Do you tip the flight attendant who brings your drinks? Other than the mode of travel, it's no different to the waiter on a ship. Where do you draw the line?

In Europe, people are paid a proper salary for the job they do. They are happy to have a job and do not expect to be tipped. So you can understand how your tipping culture is so alien to us.

For the record, when on your side of the pond, I accept the fact that servers are not paid a living wage and tip accordingly. I also pay the DSC but, after paying a 15, 18 or 20% gratuity to be handed a drink, I do not see any need to pay any additional tip. If that makes me cheap in your eyes, so be it, but I still sleep soundly at night.

On ships and in restaurants tipping is the accepted way but you do make sense with your other comments.

It baffles me as to why, if tipping is a personal thing, and personal choice, why on earth do people feel the need to discuss it and judge what others do?

It's like having 'private parts' - we all have them but don't get them out in public!

Appreciated: yes.

Expected: no.

I've only been to Copenhagen once. The visit has lasted 53 years until now.

What else would you expect from the employee? A frown? Even if they didn't appreciate the tips (which I'm sure they do) they wouldn't be so rude as to show it.

BTW, I commented on the logic. Not on the principle of tipping or not tipping.

L12 ... You do your thing and we will do ours! As long as you have a Blinkered way of how people should be paid you will always be condemning people to low pay and expect strangers to make up their money.

I have cruised many lines for over 30 years..... I do not tip during the cruise.... occasionally I have added a dollar onto the gratuity line when signing a drink slip....but thats about it. I always leave on and pay the daily service which is added to my account. Before they went to automatically adding I always paid the "suggested" daily service charge fee/gratuity for the cabin steward and dining staff directly to them and if service was exceptional....added additional to this amount. Even with the auto added on service fees....I still give a little something extra to room steward and dining staff at end of cruise....and most recently our Butler when we cruised in YC

Interesting thread.

We have not traveled Europe (sons have, one over a dozen times :(), and had no idea that there was a cultural difference in regard to tipping. Not universal in opinion on either side, but obviously there is a difference.

Regardless, and as posted earlier, we tip, we tip directly during and near the end of the cruise (we do not tip per drink though or per meal), we like tipping (we'd also rather give an extra $500 a week to 'them then go to the casino for 20 minutes and blow it (sub/comment, that is my personal, un-casino un-educated experience; I'm just terrible there :loudcry:)). And yes, in the years long ago after blowing the ca$ino, still tipped as do now, but we are more generous now. :D

We don't have an opinion on what others do, nor do we believe that we would even have any perspective for judgement of others in the first place. And, of course, vice versa.

I totally agree!! The shame is that it is what it is. So it does fall to us to pay for their exceptional service... I for one feel grateful to be in a position to do so. I apologize for my tone. This topic gets to me...
