Price of wifi

Recommended Posts

I’m onboard the Prinsendam and here’s the pricing for our 14 day segment. The Social plan was $119.99 for 14 days. We signed up for that initially, but most websites are blocked. We upgraded to the Surf plan for an additional $50, making the average cost per day $12.14. 8269a431ed8d2278e9cb1f5b75cf10ff.jpg

Cool! Any chance you can provide the pricing for a 28 day cruise on the Prinsendam? I've budgeted based on the old plan...

I just called ships services to get a price for the Internet packages for our upcoming 10 day Zuiderdam cruise. All prices are for length of cruise.

Social media plan is $89.99 (Social media sites only)

Surf plan is $129.99 (Adds Websites and email)

Streaming plan is $189.99 (Adds streaming.)

I'm pretty delighted because I would normally spend $200+ on a 10 day cruise under the old per minute plans.

Ships services has a price list based on the ship and cruise length. Why is this is not on the website? Probably because they want to hear our cheery voices.

I don't know where these prices came from, but they seem to correspond with the numbers that have been posted. They were provided to the Roll Call for the Current Voyage of the Vikings. I was told that they would not sell more than 31 days.

I already see them available for pre-purchase on our Grand Asia "already booked" site. Look under Indulgences and then Packages.

Social $499, Surf $599, Premium $699.

Is that for the 89 day trip? Thanks. The prices aren't listed yet for the GWV and I'm trying to budget.

I'd really like to be able to pre-purchase an Internet plan, like we buy excursions, gifts, specialty dining, etc. It's a business expense and I want to keep it separate from the cost of the cruise. I can do this by buying OBC, but it's not as neat and tidy.

Considering you're currently on a cruise, I'm impressed with the table you did make! Thank you very much! It's interesting the jump of $30 between 25 and 31 days, when the price is the same for both 20 and 25 days.

OMG - why are you apologizing when you are kind enough to do this while you are cruising?

I SO appreciate this. You made my day.

For once, I was good with the minute package if I had to since we have a lot of ports but I do prefer the unlimited so I don't get nervous when things stall and the minutes tick away.

I can handle the unlimited package.

Thank you :). I'm saving this post. Very helpful ;D

I think based on the new website that they really want to hear our cheery voices and are hearing them more and more and more ;) . When it works it can be hard to find some things. You are far techier than I, but I doubt many would find that information if it is there in some hidden spot underneath all the graphics.

I honestly don't know why internet prepurchase has not been made available on the HAL website.

It's an expense I know I would have so I do prefer to pay for some that precruise (exchange rates and all that foolishness).

It's not on the website. I asked the rep in case I missed it. I figured it would be easier to post the URL.

Are the wifi packages for the entire stateroom? Is there a limit to the number of devices that can connect? DH and myself both need to be able to check our work emails while on board. I also have a kindle fire that I'd like to be able to connect as well.

Per USER - You can share the plan as long as you log out from one device and log in on another.

This is all great information - thanks everyone!

Does anyone know if the Noordam is on the old or new packages?

Not 100% sure, but the HAL rep said that the ships that had been refurbished would have the new plan, so that's a tentative "Yes."

Call ships' services to confirm. Maybe if enough of us call, they'll put it on the website.

I suspect that they won't do that as long as they're in the process of converting all the ships to a single set of Internet service offers, or have plans to change or trial changes to Internet service offers.

That was my understanding too and why I was so surprised to hear that the Prinsendam now had the new unlimited wifi. When we were on in May - June/18 it was the minute package. Prinsendam has not been in a drydock since that time and is not scheduled until late this year. Very mysterious

Generally speaking, the billing upgrade is just software. The higher bandwidth can be firmware (the software for the equipment) or it might require hardware. However, even if it's hardware, it's not really hardware throughout the ship, just at the uplink / downlink.

We were on the Nieuw Amsterdam in 2014 for 3 weeks. One of the weeks, it was the top travel agents and HAL executives on the cruise. The internet became magically fast that one week. That had to be software.

There are places where CCL, RCCL and NCL use a combination of satellite and ground stations to boost speed. It's usually on heavily traveled routes where the ship's not too far from land. Think Alaska and the busier parts of the Caribbean.

As long as the speeds are decent, I'll be delighted to not have to ration my minutes. I used to do all my writing off line and then run up to the computer area to do the data transfer. Sometimes I got lucky and I got good speed from the room, but more often than not I'd burn double minutes working from the cabin.

Yep, that is also relatively easy to do with modern WiFi Access Points. I have a TPLink AC1300 Access point in the ceiling of our living room. The Management Software allows me to limit the bandwidth to devices in quite a number of ways. I can limit specific devices, all devices attached to the particular SSID and a few other ways that would only be of interest to the tekkies.

I just checked our "already booked", and there is nothing on internet packages. Did you book through a PCC or TA, in case this makes a difference? I guess we will wait until HAL actually sends the packet which is supposed to be any day now.

And does a GV offer any discount? Or is there a Mariners' discount?

I had to call Ships' Services on an unrelated issue - our cabana request - and I got the same woman that I had last time I called. (We're buds now.) While I had her on the line I asked if all the ships were on the unlimited plans now and she said that they would all be switched over by the end of summer. I realize that I should have asked for clarification if that meant the start of fall (Sept. 22) or some other date.

I also should have asked if there was still going to be a per minute option for flight check in. If anyone has to call them, please ask those two questions.

Does anyone know for the streaming plan what location will appear to the streaming service? I want to be able to stream some football games while we are on our South America cruise on the Zaandam this fall. A lot of the networks that provide streaming coverage of games do not allow streaming to locations outside of the US. I think I read on the forum that the location appears as Miami which would be great. Can anyone confirm this? If not, would I be able to use a VPN to get around this limitation?

I am currently on ms Rotterdam.

here is what I get when I look up ownership of my public ip address:

OrgName: CARNIVAL CRUISE LINES

OrgId: CCL-34

Address: 3655 N.W. 87 Ave

City: Miami

StateProv: FL

PostalCode: 33178

Country: US

I don't know what other information might be provided to streaming services which might indicate that you are outside the US.

I have called Ships Services twice and WC once. I was told by a SS "helper" that we could still buy minutes. The WC thought the same. But in the next breath she said that they weren't sure how the internet was going to be handled on the GV's because the flat rate was too new, and no one was sure of anything.

Does that help - not?

Not being a tekkie, (or is it tekky?) Anyway, can you explain what you would have to do aboard ship, in a port where there is free wi-fi, to configure a laptop to a TPLink AC1200 or AC 1300? Thanks so much.
