Mizchief224 Posted July 24, 2018 #1 Share Posted July 24, 2018 In October my Husband and I will be on Magic for a 7 day Western Caribbean. The husband is foreseeing being very bored on sea days. He works in swimming pools and will not get in public pools. To many horror stories of what happens in pools. Yes the chemicals kill it....no he does not care how "clean" it is. He is outside all day sun bathing will not be fun for him. He is not a big gambler. I am not sure what there is to do on a cruise ship. I heard there are shows. But I assume they are all at night. I don't want him to be bored. I can take a book and hang out in the sun and be fine as long as I get a drink once and a while.
cb at sea Posted July 24, 2018 #2 Share Posted July 24, 2018 There is time to relax, read, listen to music (with headphones in public), nap, eat/drink, chat with others, get a massage, use the gym, etc. My hubby thinks sea days are boring, too...but he does enjoy gambling, so that's what he does most of the day. There will be "activities", like trivia, or bingo, or other things....I'm never interested in that, so I can't think of others that they might have. There are many of us who are retired and have plenty of "relaxation" every day, or those who simply don't care for sea days. We try to choose an itinerary with the fewest sea days. Cruiser_1977 Posted July 24, 2018 #3 Share Posted July 24, 2018 Go to the spa, read in the library, go to a cooking demo, mixology competition, bingo, mini golf, games (like ping pong)...the daily sheet they give you will have TONS of stuff to do throughout the day. tallnthensome Posted July 24, 2018 #4 Share Posted July 24, 2018 No offense, but it sounds like you guys didn't do your homework before booking a cruise. There is plenty to do during sea days, just read the daily for shows, games, music, trivia, bingo, casino, food ...... Did someone twist your arm or something forcing you to go because it sounds like you are almost planning on being bored? Plenty of places out of the sun to simply relax and have some drinks. firstcruiser2010 Posted July 24, 2018 #6 Share Posted July 24, 2018 Few things. My husband thought he would be bored too. Are you traveling with friends? From our experiences this what we do on sea days. I LOVE to sun bathe. He does not! Soo, 1. we go out to the Serenity deck in the morning after sea day brunch (which is wonderful) and relax a little while. There is usually spots that are in the shade as well so he can stay out of the sun. 2. There are tons of activities from beer pong in the Red Frog Pub, trivia all day long in different areas, dancing lessons in the lounges, lip sync battle auditions, board games and cards you can play on the deck or in the library bar, book a ship tour, cooking demonstrations, etc. Look at your Fun Times the night before and have fun together choosing which activities you would like to do. There is always the option of just hanging out in the room for some snuggle time :) or chillin' with a book on the balcony as well. Last resort, there are ALWAYS people you can talk to aboard the ship. Just have fun!!
wms99 Posted July 24, 2018 #7 Share Posted July 24, 2018 On each class of ship there is a pattern, or path that folks take to get from here to there. Normally it is thru or around the casino. My wife and I try to find a nice table someplace along the "path" that is near to one of the many live music stops. We then sit, listen to music, pull out a deck of card, play rummy and people watch. Cruises are the very best for people watching.
sturderick Posted July 24, 2018 #8 Share Posted July 24, 2018 Ask someone on the boards for a copy of the funtimes for your ship and itinerary. That will give him an idea of some things he might want to do. He'll be fine! My husband is the same way and has come to really like sea days. Prismism Posted July 24, 2018 #11 Share Posted July 24, 2018 I suggest you find a new husband, because your current one sounds like a bump on a log. I would leave him at home and bring somebody who knows how to have a good time. Seriously, why would you go on a cruise if drinking and partying on a boat is considered as boring to you?? TEXSUN46 Posted July 24, 2018 #12 Share Posted July 24, 2018 I don't get in the pools, I might spend an hour sun bathing but I love sea days. I use the gym, visit the casino, play trivia, explore the ship, or find a quiet spot and watch people. If your husband is not into any of that then there is really not much about cruising that would appeal to him. We do one cruise to every two or three land vacations, but when we cruise that is what we are have in mind to do, the ports are a pretty small part of what cruising is about. I did not want be the first to say this. He's setting himself up to be bored and he probably would be. I work so hard, chilling, reading, sunning and going to the spa are a wonderful reprieve. Nic6318 Posted July 24, 2018 #14 Share Posted July 24, 2018 Hi Mizchief So, what exactly does he do to keep himself entertained when he is at home? There are a lot of things to do on a ship, tell us some of the things he likes doing at home(that keep him from being bored). Does he play sports? Does he watch sports? Is he a couch potato or does he like to keep busy? Does he play games? Does he sing, dance, listen to music? You can do all these things on a ship. ABCGreys Posted July 24, 2018 #15 Share Posted July 24, 2018 When we first started cruising my husband wasn't a fan of sea days either. Now though, he loves them! He does enjoy all of the trivia games and attends those types of activities while I lay out in the sun. But his new favorite, especially on Fantasy class ships is to sit in the shade on the Serenity deck and watch the wake while reading/dozing. There is a lot to do! So much that you'll have to decide one thing over the other.
Joebucks Posted July 25, 2018 #16 Share Posted July 25, 2018 I do not prefer sea days either. 1 is good, 2 is ok, 3+ is pushing it. With that said, I always find stuff to do, and it doesn't ruin anything. I would just much rather be at a port.
girlsbgoing Posted July 25, 2018 #17 Share Posted July 25, 2018 I also do not prefer sea days but in my very limited experience I’ve noticed that they are good rest days, especially if they fall in the middle of a cruise or at the very end. There’s plenty to do. If he’s interested in massages or something like that. If he’s not interested in spa treatments, it might be a good time to give it a try. If he’s into fitness, the gym is a cool place to kill a little time. Perhaps pack a few small games...I recently played uno with my boyfriend and we had a blast. Lol There’s ton to do on the ship, but failing finding a few good activities, perhaps just do what you’d normally on at home. Watch tv, if you have a tablet, download some movies or shows, read a book, pack, lounge around, etc etc. Sent from my iPhone using Forums

OCruisers Posted July 25, 2018 #20 Share Posted July 25, 2018 Carnival has LOTS of different types of activities offered for SEA days. Not much if you stay on the ship on Port days ... but a real effort is made to keep all entertained on SEA days. He'll be OK!
swodog94 Posted July 25, 2018 #21 Share Posted July 25, 2018 As a career Navy guy, you'd think going to sea for a vacation would be my last choice, but I prefer sea days! Being at sea with no schedule or responsibilities is heavenly! Now, unlike OP's hubby I love to spend time drinking in the pool or drinking by a pool, or laying out with a cold drink in my hand...see a pattern? ;p My wife prefers napping in our stateroom, napping on our balcony, or falling asleep in front of the TV...see a pattern?:'):') We both like to do trivia, or bingo, or hit the slots, too. Bottom line, you can find something to do regardless of your interests. And if you can't then I have to agree with others who posted earlier: you made a poor choice booking a cruise. Canadianmama3 Posted July 25, 2018 #22 Share Posted July 25, 2018 I love sea days. There is so much to do. The ship has lots of activities. I know he’s not into gambling but we found bingo a blast, there is trivia and contents, movies, mini golf, the list goes on and on. If he can’t find something to do then I think he’s the type that just won’t be happy no matter where he goes. He needs to just go with a positive attitude and try things he wouldn’t normally do. cruisin'4fun Posted July 25, 2018 #23 Share Posted July 25, 2018 I never wanted to go on a cruise because I didn't want to be stuck on a ship. Boy was I wrong. After going on our first cruise, we are not going on our 15th. We totally unplug. No phone no Internet Just the Two of Us. Bring a book, a deck of cards and maybe a game that the two of you can play. There is so much to do that the time flies by. There are so many places to do absolutely nothing if you so choose, and places to sing and dance and play all kinds of games. We really enjoy the comedy shows and The Newlywed Game. I say go with an open mind and you will have a good time
Mizchief224 Posted July 25, 2018 Author #24 Share Posted July 25, 2018 At home we play video games together...that is actually how we met. We are fairly young. I am 27 he is 35. Tallandthensome....we were going on this with some friends. But originally it was the Conquest but then Irma hit and we all had to reschedule. so we had to wait a bit for when we could go. Our friends already used their credits. so we are using ours in October rather than losing it. Most of the things you have suggested sound fun. I just don't want him to be bored because it all sounds so fun but if he doesn't like it we will never go again. As for leaving him home and stuff....I married him. you did not. leave it alone. He may take the sea days to sleep I hope to be busy on port days. This is my Honeymoon...it is 5 years late. We are leaving the kids home and just having a us vacation. girlsbgoing Posted July 25, 2018 #25 Share Posted July 25, 2018 At home we play video games together...that is actually how we met. We are fairly young. I am 27 he is 35. Yikes! Based on this and that it’s the first cruise for both of you, I suggest stepping out of the box. Use this as a chance to try new things that you wouldn’t ordinarily do. Of course some of those things will not appeal to you, but some of those things most certainly will! There’s plenty to do but it sounds like you both could afford to branch out quite a bit. P.S. I’m 34....27 and 35 isn’t that young!! But it certainly is too young to place limits on activities. I suggest branching out and trying new things as a lead up to the cruise - make this important vacation as a new opportunity to expand yourselves and grow.
