Does NCL keep notes on guests?

I had a significant issue on my last NCL cruise and chose to not report it on CC, but give NCL a chance to respond. So, I wrote corporate a letter and received a snarky response. They knew of the incident but chose to spin it. I didn't follow through but the event caused NCL to drop to almost last place in my cruise company rankings.

So, yes they do keep notes.

How does any of what you described even slightly hint that they keep notes? By snarky response you mean an answer you did not like, right?

What happended

Because of people like "Got No Real Name", I choose to let it go and not convey the long and very complicated story. An attorney onboard who witnessed the event advised me to NOT make it an issue on Cruise Critic but write a calm and professional letter. Giving that courtesy to NCL was a waste of time.

After employing an ex employee of NCL, they informed me the meeting before boarding consists of denials, like the toilets on deck 9 are probermemtal, just tell them we are aware and dealing with it? After they have been useless for weeks, she atually said, “if you knew what goes on you would never cruise with NCL” having got cruises booked she never let on, just smiled!

Same thing could be said for any employer in the world

LOL you mean people who point out the absurdity of your conspiracy theories?

Again one of that even hints that NCL keeps notes on passengers.

Amy, can you tell me an example or two of how you could tell they had this information which could only have been from prior cruises? I am interested because in 3 cruises I saw no sign of such recognition. It would not surprise me if they have been doing this for high rollers and frequent Havens guests who spend $10K or more a year with them... but no sign I can see. I am going to be a PIA next trip and ask at Customer Service, and my waiters, and my Cabin Steward what information they have.

Maybe it's the Haven / Suite-specific customers, but it's true (though I am fascinated by the European rules mentioned in this forum). Some tracking examples....

On our 1st suite cruise, our son had an issue in the kid's club - we complained politely & professionally, and were rewarded with not only multiple phone calls, but also an offer to upgrade - and the woman on the phone said (sic) "because you have decided to join us again on NCL rather than Disney...." - we never mentioned we had been on Disney in any of our conversations.

Our butler / concierge always bring up our prior cruises with NCL - yes they know we are return customers, but the details they know are rather spooky...like that our little man likes popcorn and movies and gummy bears > M&Ms. The pre-concierge has a detailed list about our likes and dislikes from prior cruises, and confirms every single one with us in the month prior to the cruise. Birthdays, anniversaries, food preferences - and what specialty restaurants we have chosen to dine at. That is simply receipt-driven. Out pre-concierge wished us good luck in the casino "since you beat us the last time" (we hit some cash on a slot machine that made for great tips for the crew).

We've bought little pieces of art twice - nothing fancy, but prints that remind us of the trip. The last cruise prior to this past June, we were notified that the artist of the last print we bought was going to be featured on the ship.

Oh - most impressively, we had an issue with our luggage and self-departure on our Thanksgiving cruise; in June, our butler made a specific request to us on the day prior to departure to ensure we didn't repeat our error. Whether that was just butlers talking to each other about guests (and we know the staff does chat about guests...come on now...wouldn't you!) or NCL trying to keep guests happy - who knows?

With thousands of guests, there is no way to track everything about everybody, but in this day and age, I would be surprised at any successful company that does not go lengths to learn everything they can about it's customers

The Ritz-Carlton is well known for taking extensive notes on their guests so that they can anticipate needs and generally provide an exceptional experience for their guests. Does anyone know whether NCL does the same thing? I would think that they could easily do this and would want to, especially for those passengers who are travelling in suites.

I can assure you they do not because of the European GDPR laws. For Instance if they did anyone in Europe could write to NCL to ask what data they have on them and ask for it to be deleted if they wish.

Further you are not allowed to hold any data on any subject unless there is a genuine need for it. Knowing what pillows you like is not in that exemption

Actually, I can tell you it does apply. It's my business and it's been my life for the last year. The cruise lines do business in Europe, and collect data for EU citizens. I may test this theory and see if NCL is prepared. Upon request, I can ask what data they keep about me, and tell them to delete it if I want. Data can only be collected about me with my consent, except for transactions for which I automatically consent by making a purchase. So data about my purchase is permitted, but keeping a record of my preferences by studying the history of where I chose to dine is not. Keeping a record of my shore excursion purchases is allowed, but creating summary data or reports that shows I like boat and snorkel excursions is not. It would also be inappropriate for anyone to have access to a report of my past purchases for the reason of seeing "what I like." It's subtle but the EU does not permit a company to track a person in any way without explicit agreement. (It's the reason you see all the opt-in notices for cookies on web sites now.) Here's the summary version:

Who does the GDPR affect?

The GDPR not only applies to organisations located within the EU but it will also apply to organisations located outside of the EU if they offer goods or services to, or monitor the behaviour of, EU data subjects. It applies to all companies processing and holding the personal data of data subjects residing in the European Union, regardless of the company’s location.

Agreed and well put. US companies I hear simply do not get GDPR in the EU and I think there are going to be some interesting cases in the months to come

Amy thanks so much... I suspect they are doing this only for well known customers then, and they are going to have a reckoning when some EU citizen throws a flag on NCL. The fines are HUGE for violations of GDPR!

4% of turnover!!!

I was on the Dawn. We had not been on a cruise in two years. We always had a balcony room not a suite. The waiter comes up to me by the pool and calls me by name and hands me my favorite drink. He said he remembered me from my previous cruise two years ago. I am not an outgoing memorable person. I don’t get how he could have remembered my name and favorite drink. I was impressed.

Welll, if that’s your intent, I’d be willing to bet they’ll have a dossier on you for your next cruise :'). Honestly, after 3 cruises (unless they were b2b2b on the same ship or you took off the DSC or you jumped off the ship, or you threw a chair at a guest or other outrageous behavior that would make you stand out) they will have little more than what you have given them.

OK - Have to ask... What is a "Tin Foil Type"? Is that like a conspiracy theorist?

I have never heard of that particular expression but I would venture to say that it describes people who are paranoid. Off topic but interesting. A paranoid or delusional person might think that the tin foil blocks the gamma rays or whatever they think the government or some entity is beaming at them. ( I have worked in psychiatry for many years and had patients who used tin foil for that purpose).

Simple answer... for suite passengers,... yes.... yes they do. We have experienced it first hand, and confirmed our theory with the butler.

Interesting -

In a day and age where you are tracked by your phone, your internet searches, your car, your watch...I suppose it's not surprising you are tracked by a service industry. That being said - if the European rules hold true, I wonder what the legal implications are.
