Calabazar Posted November 1, 2018 #1 Share Posted November 1, 2018 My daughter and I will be in Napier in December and I’m wondering what the ins and outs are as it is a working port. I understand there is a shuttle - does anyone know how much it is and where it stops? And has anyone done their own walking tour (self guided)? If you have any other Napier hints and tips, I’d love to hear them!
Swissmiss6253 Posted November 1, 2018 #2 Share Posted November 1, 2018 I don't remember about the shuttle, sorry. We did the guided walking tour with the Napier Historical Society (or a similar name). I enjoyed it very much. I remember they had maps for self guided walking tours at the museum. Well worth watching the short film about the earthquake and reconstruction.
Rare OzKiwiJJ Posted November 1, 2018 #3 Share Posted November 1, 2018 (edited) I'm fairly certain the shuttle was free and it stopped at the iSite Information Centre on the Esplanade, which is across the road from the main street of the town. You can get the maps for the self guided walking tours at the iSite and there will be plenty of helpers there to advise you. BTW make sure you take original photo id ashore with you (drivers licence or passport). The Napier port authorities don't like passport photocopies. They pulled one couple off the bus at the port entrance for "further processing" when we were there last year. Calabazar Posted November 2, 2018 Author #4 Share Posted November 2, 2018 Thanks Swissmiss and OzKiwi. Sounds like we will be able to get ourselves into town and do our own tour without too much trouble. And thanks for the tip about acceptable ID, we’ll make sure we’re organised! Rare erewhon Posted November 2, 2018 #5 Share Posted November 2, 2018 There is no charge for the shuttle from ship side to the Information centre, but make sure you take government issued ID with you as security staff will check all ID's before re entering the port area. On several occasions we have seen folk removed from the shuttle at the port gate for "further processing" and returned to the ship in the security van. roothy123 Posted February 1, 2020 #12 Share Posted February 1, 2020 (edited) We did Gannet Overland Safari's trip up to Cape Kidnappers to see gannets. It was a great adventure (don't do it if you're squeamish about being driven up, up, up on dirt roads) and there were SO many gannets close up. They are not there year round, however, or at least I don't think so. This was a wonderful tour. They will pick you up from a spot in Napier that's fairly close to the shuttle drop at the iSITE. Before the tour, we walked around Tennyson and surrounding streets looking at the art deco. You could ride in an antique car or a trike; don't think reservations were needed. We just walked. After the gannet tour, the driver took us around a little bit in Napier, then a short way to the west to see the beautiful National Tobacco Building in Ahuriri (spelling?) If there are two ships in town, you may be shuttled to a place by the mini-golf place just below the iSITE. But either place is very convenient. Ours was free; assume it is for everyone. And yes, we had to show a photo ID to get into the port on the shuttles - this was the case in most other NZ ports we visited. Tansy Mews Posted February 22, 2020 #13 Share Posted February 22, 2020 We used I-Site (local tourist office) to book the morning art deco tour and an afternoon tour with Fantastic Tours (good tour to a mountain top, etc.) Prepaid but refundable if you ship can't dock. Receipt from the town council!
WESTEAST Posted February 22, 2020 #14 Share Posted February 22, 2020 We loved Napier and started our day with the Hawkes Bay Express (https://www.hbexpress.co.nz) and throughly enjoyed it - the train takes you all over Napier. The conductor/guide, Will is fabulous and full of information and great humour. Relaxing introduction to this beautiful part of NZ. The train was on the pier when we disembarked our ship - can't get more convenient and you had the option to be dropped off in town at the end which we did. Believe they only do ship shore excursions which keeps them busy. Afterwards, we walked the quaint town, had coffee and then went to the National Aquarium as we had booked 'Encounter with the Little Penguins' which was amazing!
