Edge Overpriced???

I think you have a serious misunderstanding on how cruise prices work.  No modern cruise ships sails with significant numbers of empty rooms.  That is a waste of money.  The price is constantly updated based on bookings compared to models.  The fact that there is such a premium represents the opposite, that the demand is above normal.  You think they are stupid and just raise prices with decreased demand?  I can't find the quote but I remember there was an interview with either the RC or Celebrity CEO saying profits were higher than expected due to the higher premiums they were able to charge for Edge.  They don't just chose a price and sit back and twiddle their fingers.

There is absolutely no question demand for Edge has dropped.  TAs are reporting cancelled bookings like dropping flies.  What once was the hottest Edge ticket in town...the inaugural TA in April now has categories open in every single category... including every type of suite and the hard to get Iconic Suite.  Make no mistake, when they start offering free cruises on their brand new ship to casino players as well as offering 4 perks, sales are wayyyyy down than anticipated.   You've said it yourself, you like Edge, you're young and hip, but even after being on the market for 2 years, you haven't booked because you think it's too expensive.  So who exactly do you think they're going to fill the ship with??

The fact that there are 100 rooms you can choose don't necessarily mean that they are all unsold. They may be sold and just unallocated.

I think this board does not represent the crusing population overall, especially compared to that pdf i linked (https://cruising.org/-/media/research-updates/research/consumer-research/2018-clia-travel-report.pdf).  When you are on a cruise you mostly run into people with similar schedule that you have, so like the similar demographic.  Like if you are the type that goes to diner early and goes to sleep and wakes up early to go sunbathe or go excursion you aren't going to be hanging out with those that go to the late dinner and then go to the bars/casino/venues until late at night.  So everyone's view of the cruise demographic is biased.  There are also a lot more rich european and asian's on these more premium cruises that isn't reflected at all here.

I think also a lot of the target population is waiting for the prices to come down.  The prices are high not because celebrity is arbitrarily making it high, but because of high demand.  I also wonder what the normal timeline for booking cruises is between ages.  I suspect younger people live more flexible lives and schedules and tend to book cruises much later than traditionally.  Maybe after all the people who don't like the changes stop going and chose other lines then the people who enjoy it can start enjoying it.

I personally think it's brilliant and I suspect it will do well.  Just imagine it the other way around, if you are the target audience.  If you are a young professional, young genx/millenial/old geny, making >$100k a year, living in a metropolitan city with certain expectations of decor and food, more independent to whom good service means something different than traditionally.  What cruise line caters to this demographic?  What if you want to go slightly upscale from norwegian?

So you’re now telling me that those pax that have already sailed on Edge are being untruthful about the ship not sailing full, and how easy it has been for them to get a reduced upgrade onboard to a suite (as they didn’t wish to sail in the IVs after experiencing them)? You still didn’t answer my question regarding how quickly you made your booking on Edge? You’re also getting a little confused - X is a mass market cruise line - just like several others. I can’t comment on NCL as I’ve never sailed with them; perhaps you can enlighten us?

Additionally, as Cruise Junky stated above, if it’s that popular why are X giving away free cruises this early in the game? And I reiterate, where are all these pax you describe in any of the photos that are being shown of actual sailings? Are all the millennials you describe staying in their virtual IVs?

So there may infect already be hoards of millennials, just awake during opposite hours, doing the nocturnal graveyard shift and no one else has seen them.  Interesting, I hope they learn to use their cell phones so we can get an idea.

So I just did a mock booking on our TA site for the 9 night Edge to compare it to our booking on Silhouette for next Thanksgiving.  Both are 9 nights and both are for a suite:

Mock booking:  Sky Suite (S3) for $12, 216 with $1500 OBC (on Edge)

Current booking: Royal Suite (RS) for $12, 250 with $1550 OBC (on Silhouette)

Not sure I'd pay $12k for an entry level suite, new ship or not.  We are in a S2 in April on the Edge and we paid what I think is pretty typical (or typical on S-class ships).  But we booked 18 months ago when the prices were still reasonable.

We enjoy cruising in a suite and chose the Silhouette for next year because of the length of the itinerary and the availability of the RS.  It's our 15 year wedding anniversary so a bit of a splurge.  Silhouette will not have gone through its Edgeification at that time.  I'm wondering what will happen to prices on S-class ships after they come out of dry dock resembling the Edge class amenities.

So over priced? It's all relative to the individual.  Edge is currently over priced for me.  I'm grateful for the booking I have bc we may not otherwise get to sail on her at her current price point.

Just out of interest, what is the S2 comparative price on Silhouette?

HOT off the presses(email): Just received from a discount TA an offer of half price on an inside Edge cabin.  March 2019.

yes overpriced and I think they’re starting to feel the pain

They seem to be charging quite a bit more off their website than a big box store, let alone e-mail deals.  I guess inside cabins are the easiest category to discount without people upgrading.

Cruise Junky, you might be right but you are making assumptions with subjective data and not real data.  So "absolutely no question" is a pretty strong statement. The only real hard data is that Edge is expensive and some sales perks are being offered.  Just like other Celebrity ships.  Have you actually sailed Edge?  I have recently and it was at capacity on my sailing even with the high prices.  How can you really know about the entire world of Travel Agent Bookings ("dropping like flies") and cancellations?  Based on a comment or two here from people who take delight in bashing all things Edge?

My data isn't coming from a couple of posts here.  And if I'm wrong, why are categories opening up on previously sold out cruises?  why are 4 perks being offered only on Edge? why are they giving away cruises for free? and why now are Online TA's offering 50% off?  Why are people onboard being able to upgrade to empty suites onboard?  Any sailings that have passed would have been passed final payment by the time Edge launched.  They didn't have the data to cancel.

As I said above you might be right but I was just pointing out it is your own interpretation and assumptions. I think the one solid truth that perhaps many will agree about is that Edge is at a very high price point as a new ship.  Everything is market driven.  I signed up for a CS on Edge the very first day offered in March 2017 for my Jan 20th 2019 cruise.  I got a fantastic price not seen since.   I personally would not pay the current price of that cabin for another cruise but I would sail Edge again perhaps in a couple of years when the market dictates a more reasonable price.  That's me.  I never buy the latest 65" ultra TV at $2000 but wait a year or two and spend $500 instead.
