Rare notamermaid Posted April 2, 2019 #2 Share Posted April 2, 2019 Thank you for the link. Bubbles to aid propelling a ship? I am glad it is April the 2nd! Wonder how that works... The ship sure is big, 135m long and 17.7m wide. It will be the widest river cruise ship on the Rhine. notamermaid

Rare notamermaid Posted May 7, 2021 #11 Share Posted May 7, 2021 As the hull was built in Romania and is too wide to travel to the Netherlands via the Danube it is travelling by ship through the Mediterranean. Expected arrival in the shipyard for interior fitting is in mid May. Here is a photo of the hull ready for the journey (press release of A-ROSA): https://www.arosa-*****/fileadmin/media/presse/PM/2021/20210506/A-ROSA-Neubau-auf-dem-Dockschiff_c_Concordia-Damen.jpg notamermaid
Rare notamermaid Posted August 10, 2021 #12 Share Posted August 10, 2021 Big news this morning. We have a name! A-ROSA have announced that the E-Motion ship will be called A-ROSA Sena. Here is the press release page: https://www.arosa-*****/river-cruises/company/press/newsdetail/news/rhein-neubau-a-rosa-sena.html?tx_news_pi1[controller]=News&tx_news_pi1[action]=detail&cHash=bb46c2f36117e48b6d42bb516af0b691 And now that the ship can be addressed by name, the company is ready for full marketing. Rare notamermaid Posted August 10, 2021 #13 Share Posted August 10, 2021 A bit more info (taken from the German press release and translated) via travelweekly UK: https://travelweekly.co.uk/news/cruise/a-rosa-names-new-part-electric-river-ship It will be a big ship indeed, somewhere in size between the container barges sailing the Rhine and the standard river cruise ships. As she is not going to sail upstream from Cologne (according to A-Rosa; she could theoretically sail a bit further upstream with her size, but her height may be the reason for restrictions - not sure) I will need to head out to Cologne next year to see this truly unique construction. notamermaid
Rare notamermaid Posted October 24, 2021 #14 Share Posted October 24, 2021 We have another name! A-Rosa have chosen a captain for the A-Rosa Sena, it is Ulli Schwalbe. The introduction of the captain in a German article: https://binnenschifffahrt-online.de/2021/10/featured/22665/kapitaen-schwalbe-uebernimmt-die-a-rosa-sena/ Here he is: https://youtu.be/XWReH4T3IGc The A-Rosa Sena will sail from May. notamermaid
Rare notamermaid Posted January 19, 2022 #15 Share Posted January 19, 2022 Count down the days till the A-Rosa Sena sails for the first time. Or, much easier, let the company do it for you. Rare notamermaid Posted February 14, 2022 #16 Share Posted February 14, 2022 The Sena has not started sailing yet, but companies need to look ahead. Right now, this is so far only an agreement between the shipyard and A-Rosa to continue the cooperation. It may result in a sister ship of the Sena. The company is not ready yet to take up the offer by the shipyard. But A-Rosa is certainly looking into it and wants to also expand to other rivers. This could be the Gironde or the Loire. In Germany they are looking at the Havel. And here is the important bit: they do not want to sail the Elbe because of the regular low water issues. Article in German: https://www.touristik-aktuell.de/nachrichten/news/datum////arosa-option-fuer-sena-schwesterschiff/ We know of Viking's problems on the Elbe although they have two purpose-built modern ships for that river. Other North-American lines in the recent past have expressed not wanting to attempt the Elbe for the same reason as A-Rosa. notamermaid
Rare Host Jazzbeau Posted February 14, 2022 #17 Share Posted February 14, 2022 Did Viking focus on the low water issues when they designed those ships, or did they just adapt their big-bottom 'long ships'? They have a history of doing what they want and expecting the world [Paris authorities, Mother Nature] to comply...

According to the shipyard it was an innovative design, partly lighter material for the hull and a jet propulsion of sorts - I do not remember the details about that engine - that were used for the Elbe ships. So, the Elbe was a bit naughty on Viking if you like. The company had tried hard. I did not really understand what went wrong, other than that the river did worse than expected. An engineer may know more. notamermaid
Rare notamermaid Posted April 11, 2022 #19 Share Posted April 11, 2022 Arosa has announced that Yvonne Catterfeld - the face of Arosa, if you like, she acts as a kind of ambassador - will christen the Arosa Sena in Cologne on 14 May: https://www.arosa-*****/river-cruises/company/press/newsdetail/news/yvonne-catterfeld-is-godmother-of-the-a-rosa-sena.html?tx_news_pi1[controller]=News&tx_news_pi1[action]=detail&cHash=a37d72bc3cc6aae500a918941452adae notamermaid

The first cruise would have been the media cruise on May 21st which has been cancelled. Anyway we are not in town so we have to look for a later date to discover this new ship. steamboats

I look forward to a review from you (two) when you have the chance to see the Arosa Sena. A pity that she only sails downstream (due to her size). It means I will never see her in my neck of the woods. Such a different ship, must find some time to go to her home port, I am eager to see her. notamermaid
