What type of plug (C or J) is required on the Crystal River boats?

Even if the outlet is type J (I had to look it up - it is 3 round pins with the 3rd fairly close to the other 2 - as I had never heard of it), you can plug type C (European 2 round pins) into it.

Followup question.  Is it true that there are no 110v outlets on the Crystal boats.

Hi Roy.

Can't say that I remember from our Bach cruise in December 2017. If no on else answers between now and then, I will let you know when we board Bach a week tomorrow!

Yes, it's true there are no 110 volt plugs.  It's Europe.  They are 220v.  Most US gadgets now are dual voltage so you'll just need an adapter, but double check curling irons.  A lot of them are still 110 volt only.

I thought I'd be a genius last year and bring along a power strip to plug our various things into, using an adapter to plug the strip into the wall.  NOPE!  It immediately popped the breaker that fed several cabins in our area.

I had a butler inspect all of my electronic devices (not voluntarily but friendly). I also brought along a power strip but didn't use it once I realized I didn't have a US outlet (they should). One of my devices was not dual voltage and I was told "to put it away". They do not want you to use converters. They will provide adapters for you!

I did bring my correct plug in for my Apple stuff. The Mozart did have USB ports for charging.

It would be a TERRIBLE idea to have US outlets providing 220 volts. No matter what is said verbally or in writing I predict a fire within no more than 2 cruises from someone plugging in their smuggled 110v-only curling iron or some such.

Most power strips include surge protection (a very small percentage don’t). Did your power strip have surge protection? If so, its use on a boat (or ship) is a significant fire hazard.

I knew once I got to the ship that there were no US outlets and didn't even try. I had heard that Viking has both European and US outlets in their rooms. I had cruised Ocean cruises in Europe and my power strip (not surge) is always in my suitcase with me. When I was unpacking - I looked at the outlets and realized it was staying in the suitcase.

Thank you.  I'll probably just leave my 110V gadgets at home, there's so little that isn't dual voltage now.

On Bach last week we had a 110 and a European 220 volt socket at the desk, so I would assume the other three newer ships are the same. We used both with the appropriate plug adapter with no problems. Everything we travel with is dual voltage.

Interesting - good to know!

You will love it Roy. The Entertainment Directors Joe and Liv are great!!

Thanks.  Unfortunately (perhaps) my Entertainment directors are Roz and James Clay.  Did you have Carolien Van Zijverden or Viktoria Bujaki on your cruise.  I also hope the water levels hold up.

We had dinner with Carolien on the Society evening and also as an escort on the tours and she is a lovely person. We also had Viktoria as the Shorex Manager, but I suspect she may not be there as she is getting married to Elod, one of the Barkeeps on July 20.

Looks like the water levels on the Rhine are holding, so you should be okay.

rafinmd, when are you boarding the Bach?  My wife & I are boarding on July 22 cruising to Amsterdam (our first river cruise), then embarking on the Serenity to cruise to Lisbon (our 3rd Crystal ocean cruise).  Are you doing the same?

No, I'm looking far ahead.  October 27.  Serenity will be Barcelona to Ft. Lauderdale.

I know many of the crew on Bach are looking forward to visiting Serenity when both are in Amsterdam. I suspect the reverse may also be true!
