San Juan

Yes it leads direct into town.  Most excursions also start nearby so it will be very crowded.  We did a bus tour of the old and new San Juan.  It was a okay tour but in retrospect should have simply stayed in the older part.

We have always walked in San Juan. It is a very walkable city, but if you do not care to walk, you can take the trolley, as others have mentioned. I recommend you go to google earth and look around. As you can see from this snip, it is close and it is absolutely amazing to walk the streets. to see the courtyards, the doors, the blue cobblestone streets, the cats, the old walled entrance to the city, the coffee shops, the churches.. okay, i am missing it right now. There is even a sort of CVS as you are walking toward the forts if you need to get supplies.. They give out maps to town too. Oh and if you are there on a weekend, they will be flying kites on the lawn of the El Morro. Have a great trip!

Take the nearby free trolley around Old San Juan.  Stops at both forts and many other locations.

This is what we did.   And by chance we had our National Parks pass with us so admission to the two forts was also free.

Stop running at 6pm sharp and the driver would make you get off regardless of where the trolley is. So bear that in mind.

We are sailing on the Nieuw Amsterdam into San Juan on Nov 19th. Does anyone know what pier that HAL uses in San Juan?

Thanks,

Larry

These are two of the five piers of the Old Juan Cruise Ship Terminal off Calle Marina. The pier on the left of the pic is known as Pier No. 4 (Muelle 4) which has two cruise ship berths and one terminal building which is shared. No. 4 is managed by Carnival Cruises. The berths are known as 4 East and 4 West - HAL ships usually berth at 4 West. As a side note, Carnival Cruise Line voyages that originate from San Juan do so from Pier No. 4

The pier on the right side of the pic is known as Pier No. 3 (Muelle 3) which mainly serves Royal Caribbean, as well as other transit cruise lines. Pier No. 3 reopened in late 2014 after undergoing a $6.3 million makeover that allows it to accommodate Royal Caribbean's mega Oasis-class ships. It is managed by RCI and also has two berths, 3 East and 3 West and it has its own terminal building which is shared.

Pier 6 (Muelle 6) at Bahia Urbana is located just east of Pier No. 4 and has a capacity for one cruise ship. It is only used on heavy cruise traffic days

The No. 2 pier (Muelle 2) is only used by small ferries

I had thought virtually all ships turned around at Ilha Grande (where Freedom OTS is docked), but see that Carnival (Fascination today) is actually using Muell 4.  I hope today the demonstrations do not interfere too much with operations.

I never, not once had a 'bad day' in San Juan and we spent Many days   there.

all who will be   there soon, have a  great time,

One visit  won't be enough, maybe you'll  want to return one day?

HAL does not always go to the same pier in San Juan.  we have been docked at several  through the years.

All we   have been to on HAL  ships   are equally convenient IMO

Some have better duty free in the terminal than others.
