Delayed Departure

Whilst not specifically P&O related but, due to a recent thread regarding breakdowns that had  been closed, I thought it worth pointing out the following.

We are on RCI Explorer of the Seas tomorrow for a 14 night Med cruise from/to Southampton.

Received an email this afternoon advising that she will be late in by about 4 hours due to leaving Stavanger late and all boarding times by deck have been revised.

Cannot confirm the reason but have read that divers were down in Stavanger - something to do with the props, maybe true, I'm sure we will find out.

The purpose of posting this is just to point out that, if true, P&O are not the only cruise line that have ships that experience the occasional 'mechanical' and assume their maintenance schedules are much of a muchness with other cruise lines.

That is the case, it is sometimes new ships too. Some people see it as an opportunity to denigrate P&O. We were on Marella Celebration in the Caribbean last November when she lost all power, we were told it was basically a blown fuse caused by overload because it was so hot the aircon had to be turned up. There are lots of examples if you google it.

There really is no point trying to defend P&O you will always get the ones who complain from formal nights not tendering at Guernsey, smells on ship ripping people off by mistakes websites not working quick enough the list is endless but still they cruise with them,i was lucky we have friends who cruise two and three times a year P&O and Cunard and refuse to even look at this site but gave us invaluable advice.

Earlier this week RC something of the seas was in Southampton . She left late as they had divers going down . No idea why ,but she went out late.

All these problems down to cost cutting on all these other lines do you think.( i have my tongue firmly in cheek here). Surely not only Pando do cost cutting.

I don't believe any of them are cost cutting.  It's a mechanical vehicle, they go wrong, just like aircraft, cars, etc.  Not to mention all the non-mechanical bits like software.

I'm not saying this is the cause of these particular incidents, but it could be down to cost cutting if they have reduced the frequency of the services/maintenance inspections, or have cut the numbers of engineers available to do the work, in the same way that the stewards and waiters have to cover more rooms/tables.

Of course none of the cruise lines can foresee events like props being fouled by fishing nets.

It really does not matter which cruise line it is, it is just a real shame if cruises are disrupted and passengers inconvenienced.

Totally agree but the way some people post you would think ony pando have problems. I also agree they would have a mtce. scheldule they adhere to. Plus like all specialised skills, there are probably only so many people who can do the work required. I will have to keep an eye out to see if any others get stuck here.
