My thoughts on the Sunrise and carnival after my 8 day cruise from NY

BUT there are cruise lines that give offers to those who cruise with them and to get them back.  RC gives discounts off the price of cruises depending on your "level status" and type of cabin.  For instance, if your diamond you get $100 off per person on a balcony cabin, more on a suite and less in Oceanview and interior but they still give something off to get you back.  Carnival doesn't do this, which shows, they just don't want to spend time in getting customers back.

...or it means they do not have to do it.

Whatever Carnival is doing, they continue to fill 26 ships every day every week. Only time will tell if long term they lose enough repeat customers that it starts impacting their ability to fill their ships.

As you well know, if given the option (and I would guess this is true of all lines, but do not know), they would choose newbies every time, for the obvious reasons.

Carnival would just as soon the P&Ds move on. They complain the most and probably spend the least. The probably spend less on photos, spend less on tours and excursions (book the internet) and often avoid the slots in a casino that has no gaming authority. They wisely do they heavy drinking in the ports more often pass on bingo. Not an ideal client demographic for a cruise line.

That being said, I love Carnival. Always know what I'm getting and no surprises. Cruise new or near new ships exclusively (not refurbs with new names) with the exception being those gracious old Fantasy Class ships out of Long Beach. And those nubies, god love'em, blowing a couple house payments in the casinos, excursions and bars make my inside passage a bargain. If I book early enough I can even get an inside cabin that's actually an outside cabin with portholes! 🙂

Where did you get your information that P&Ds complain the most?  I find it is just the opposite. I have lost count how many people on this site alone have raved about FTTF for the short to no lines at Guest Services. Why is this...because most P&Ds don’t complain about anything. By the time someone reaches these levels, the majority of them are either happy with Carnival or have moved on to another cruise line.

Ugh.  We have booked radiance in 2020.  Easy saver or early saver, whatever the non refundable deal is called.

You have to remember that everyone's individual cruise experience is totally subjective.  Same ship, different week= totally different crowds and vibe.

I might state it differently, but they certainly spend less.  That is why when loyalty gift topics come up, some here think they should be getting free cruises I stand of a lanyard.  You have a brand new ship sailing out of Long Beach in a few months, lets hope the west coast will keep her full.  I have my doubts for a couple of reasons, one of which is a pretty narrow itinerary for the Panorama.  I had hopes of them expanding it and getting more creative but it was not to be.

Not so sure, when on our Journey cruise on the Breeze during an open Q & a session John Heald held (poor choice of that word after his name but...) he mentioned the numbers which were staggering 340 Diamonds and 1900 Platinums.  The discussion dwarfed into two topics - one semi joking about these people being...ummm... cheap compared to a “normal” sailing and then how tipping might change in the future....semi unrelated.

Completely agree!! My favorite cruise was on the Triumph, great port, great stops and a lot of fun. My wife's favorite cruise was the Splendor San Juan to Miami relocation cruise.

I quite agree. A lower Mexican Riviera would also be nice. Have done an 8-day on the SPIRIT to Ixtapa//Zihuantaneyo, Manzanillo, Acapulco and Puerto Vallarta. I think she'll eventually make trips to Hawaii and even Vancouver. This surprises me also, as the other lines don't have a big presence here in LA. Used to be a race between the big three as we all left Los Cabos about the same time heading home. Blowing of horns and crossing each others wake . . . fascinating. 🙂

How does being “cheap” relate to complaining? Do cheap people voice their complaints by removing auto-gratuities?  I know you are privy to a lot of Carnival surveys and “inside” information. Does Carnival have statistics indicating D&Ps remove the most auto-gratuities?

Have no idea.  Never seen them of they do, but I would be shocked if they do not tract removing grats by VIFP number.  I found the whole conversation very interesting.  The couple next to us in the show room was very vocal until the removing tips portion came up...then they got silent.  To be honest I would have thought they were the best tippers...but what do I know.

Different crowed would have made the cruise more tolerable - and maybe if less families that would mean less people.

Amazing we have gotten to tipping on this thread - see anything goes!

I did mention that service on this ship was amazing.

How was debarkation?

Debarkation was actually the best we have ever experienced. My family and I went down to the radiance dining room at 9 o’clock in the morning, grab the coffee and were called at about 910. By 930 we were in our car leaving the port .Again there were only about 175 platinum and diamond members on the ship so it really was a breeze to get off.
