LostFan#1 Posted February 23, 2020 #1 Share Posted February 23, 2020 We leave in one week for a few days in Santiago before boarding Coral Princess for a 32-day cruise. We received the "emergency notification" email from Princess this morning - that had my heart pounding! It warned about those who would not be allowed on board, explained increased screening of pax, and hinted that port modifications might occur. Is anyone else sailing around SA soon and getting a little nervous? I admit to not reading all news sources, but I haven't read about any coronavirus cases in SA or SA ports denying entry to cruise ships. But Italy has had an explosion of cases and major events there have been impacted. However, I'm still packing.... Thanks, Debbie
clo Posted February 23, 2020 #2 Share Posted February 23, 2020 Watching the news last night and they showed a world map with lines indicating where the virus has shown up. It appeared that there was non in Africa or South America. Maybe the safest place to go 🙂
TeeRick Posted February 24, 2020 #3 Share Posted February 24, 2020 It is summer in the southern hemisphere so hopefully that will negatively impact spread of coronavirus there if it behaves like influenza and other cold viruses. But of course passengers coming from everywhere will need to be questioned and screened.
loerie Posted February 24, 2020 #4 Share Posted February 24, 2020 We leave in a few days for SA.Not worried at all -I am an retired nurse and so tired of the hype.If your immune system is not good -thats a different story.Putting the fear of God into people causes more anxiety problems
LostFan#1 Posted February 24, 2020 Author #5 Share Posted February 24, 2020 Thanks, everyone. We are healthy with good immune systems. I pray SA ports don’t panic and start refusing passengers to come ashore. Safe travels to you.
loerie Posted February 24, 2020 #6 Share Posted February 24, 2020 My Dr over the many years always gives me a prescription for antibiotics -some years we have used then but mostly not.He know I will not abuse them and always good to have on hand.

HALrunner Posted February 25, 2020 #8 Share Posted February 25, 2020 With the dramatic increases in Italy over the last few days, I am glad we skipped our usual spring transatlantic and booked a SA cruise instead. If an outbreak happens in the US before our cruise, I am concerned that certain ports might not allow our ship to port.
LostFan#1 Posted February 25, 2020 Author #9 Share Posted February 25, 2020 I share that concern. When is your cruise? Ours leaves Santiago March 5.

We depart March 15, hopefully. I'm more concerned now that Brazil has confirmed it's first case, approx 5 hours from Rio. The patient just returned from Italy, so it is possible he connected through Rio.
LostFan#1 Posted February 26, 2020 Author #11 Share Posted February 26, 2020 That's probable, and I'm sure all those pax on the flight with him are now more than a little anxious.

We are not concerned. Hotter weather tends to dissipate such viral events. Furthermore, I would regret staying home and miss out on getting a nice tan

The infectious medicine specialists here in Uruguay are saying that it will be here sooner or later and the public health systems here are preparing themselves for an outbreak. All the countries down here have good public and private health systems - I would just make sure you have adequate medical coverage in case you need care. it isn't expensive but it isn't free either for foreigners. mcmarya Posted February 28, 2020 #14 Share Posted February 28, 2020 Unfortunately, apparently most travel insurance will not cover you for an epidemic, especially if your coverage was purchased after January 21 (which mine was). Feeling a little nervous.

Feeling a little nervous. It might be worth looking at https://www.insuremytrip.com/ You can find coverage comparisons and prices including CFAR coverage depending on various requirements. The site is recommended by AARP.
