CPT Trips Posted April 1, 2020 #1 Share Posted April 1, 2020 The Coast Guard recently sent a COVID memo stating that cruise ships should evacuate any ill pax privately. That cruise ships should seek aid and assistance from the country where they are flagged. https://homeport.uscg.mil/Lists/Content/Attachments/62863/MSIB 20-001 COVID-19 Cruiseship Medical Capabilities_Signed.29Mar20.pdf

Have any others done the same? I also wonder if it could be a violation of international maritime law to refuse assistance. Regardless, it hardly matters . There are no cruise ships operating in or near US waters right now save the two Holland America ships looking for permission to dock somewhere. And a careful reading suggests they're really only talking about ships flagged in the Bahamas. Edited April 1, 2020 by njhorseman

The USCG is tightening the approval conditions for its field rescue and requiring confirmation that shoreside services (e.g., commercial ambulance and medical services) have been secured by the cruiseline (also encouraging the line to seek necessary assistance from their country of registration). As I just mentioned to the OP, the USCG is NOT denying field rescue. Anyone interested should read the MSIB.

Not concerned with your post. Just want folks to realize that OP's interpretation was a stretch, which is the last thing we need right now.
K32682 Posted April 2, 2020 #7 Share Posted April 2, 2020 It is entirely appropriate that foreign-flagged vessels should seek assistance from their own country rather than "loiter" off the coast of the U.S. and call on the USCG and burden the American health system. I have a friend who is currently floating around on Coral Princess, her 14 day S America cruise has already lasted 30 days and she is still not sure when they are going to be able to disembark.
