That’s pretty funny. No one’s on their balconies because of the stench from that smoke. I pay a lot of money to use that balcony and I should not be denied that part of my cabin. This was never a problem pre Covid.  It is long past time the crew goes back to their pre Covid smoking areas. They are no longer socially distanced anywhere else on the ship or in their quarters. The crew bars are open and so on.

Moreover, all passengers should be given access to the aft promenade for their exercise and/or leisure.

Agree - we love aft cabins and are very fortunate to be able to afford PH and Owners Suite cabins.  However, we have worked very hard to get to this point and to not have full use of the balcony due to a small percentage of the crew that needs to smoke does not seems right.  We have 4 cruises coming up in the next 12 months and are having 2nd thoughts due to this situation.

Thank you. Well said!

When we were in our corner aft (regular cabin) on the Emerald in May, it was very disappointing to walk onto our balcony and smell the cigarette smoke.

You are absolutely correct that this was NEVER an issue pre-covid.

I have booked E730 on an upcoming Sapphire cruise and am left to wonder if I will also be subjected to the smoke?  I will be very annoyed if I am unable to enjoy the balcony because of it.  Does anyone have any advice about finding out where the crew smoking section is once the Sapphire returns to service?

Ask on the roll call for her first sailing.

Just assume that it is so. After reading many threads of different ships and aft balconies, this seems to be the case. I really do not know what it would take to get the point across to Princess.

I think you are correct and it's such a bummer. All the other suites and CC mini's are booked so it's this suite of a regular balcony.

Are you aware of outdoor smoking areas (crew or passengers) on Viking Ocean? Thx

The smoking area on Viking Ocean is outside and clear up top away from staterooms---imagine that[insert sarcasm].   We've been on two Viking Ocean cruises and never...never noticed cigarette smell anywhere.  Btw...Viking Ocean has a full promenade deck on all their ocean ships.

@HaveDogWillTravelThank you for posting the pictures that you did.  It's helpful to the rest of us in deciding how to handle our upcoming potential cruises with Princess.   As someone posted earlier, Princess has taken a stance...and it's obvious who they value more.  Helps me in my decision.

Thank you for your feedback. So, no smoke from on top wafts down to any aft staterooms?

I sent an email to 4 of the top level execs at Princess about 10 days ago, asking what their proposed solution to this issue was going to be and when. Obviously I have not received any response and probably won't.  We have 4 cruises upcoming in aft suites but due to health issues that are affected by smoke, we are contemplating how to move forward.  We will be on Baja for one cruise and Aloha for the other three.  Wondering if being that high up will give us some protection.

No.  None. If you look at deck plans, their designated smoking area for passengers is deck 8 starboard side towards the aft.   If there's an area for crew to smoke, passengers don't know about it.

Princess Corporation...are you listening???

Yes you will have some protection.  On Aloha you will be minimally inconvenienced. Baja will be fine more often than it is not. My issue is that I feel for the prices we pay to sail in these suites we should never be inconvenienced.

In April on the Ruby we had the Dolphin deck Vista and had to vacate our balcony a few times due to smoke. Yet we still had many, many wonderful times on the balcony.

On other sailings on the Aloha and the Baja decks we mostly just went ewwwwwwww and waited for the wind to change. Unacceptable for the price. So yes I will complain.

Even though I have expressed my concerns most vocally to Princess through emails and surveys as well as voiced them here on CC I continue to sail these aft facing balconies.  I have had far more positive experiences on board  (specialty dining breakfast every day OMG I actually dream about it!) than I have had negative experiences on the balcony.

I try to always get the Aloha deck suites, then Baja, then Dolphin. I’ll take a caribe that’s not next to vents next. Last but not least I’ll take those stinky caribe deck PH suites next to the vents.

I still sail the aft facing suites as the entirety of the experience is just wonderful.  But I will go through the appropriate channels on board and off to try and get this back to what it should be……what it was before Covid…. 100% access to the balcony smoke free.

For those who aren’t aware, these balconies run between $350 to almost $700 (Grand & Sky suites can be more) EVERY DAY PER PERSON.  So $700 to $1400 each and every day. MUCH MORE than many pay for the entire cruise.  I only mention this as I don’t want people to trivialize the financial aspect. I did not inherit any money. I worked HARD since I was 14. I lived within my means and saved diligently.  This expectation by anyone is not being entitled regardless of how you can afford it.

The main reason many allocate so much money for these suites is to spend their time on that balcony rejuvenating and recovering and breathing and loving and living.

@Triptkrits not deck 8, it’s deck 7

Thank you so much for doing that. We all look forward to any feedback and answers your may receive.

We were in a corner aft on the Baja deck on the Emerald and there was lots of smoke. It was disgusting and Princess is totally blowing it and out of touch. They should just send staff to smoke in the casino on their breaks.

@HaveDogWillTravelIf you read the post--I was replying back to Nini...referring to the designated smoking location on Viking Ocean ships.  Which is on deck 8.

I am well aware the Princess crew smoke on deck 7 aft.

Oops my bad sorry about that!  Thanks for the correction!

We were on the Royal a few weeks ago E727 I think, with the wrap around balcony corner aft suite. We spent many hours on the balcony, and loved it!  I could smell smoke once in awhile, usually while I was on starboard side edge.  It was usually passengers on deck 7, immediately below us who were smoking, not the crew!

Not a big problem for us, smell didn’t last long!  If I could afford it, I would book that suite for every cruise we take!!!

Thank you.  An occasional smell of smoke is not a big problem, but we want to spend time in our cabin enjoying the balcony - particularly on sea days and in the evenings.  We both have asthma and strong cigarette smoke can trigger bad reactions in both of us so we try to be very careful.

Thank you to all of you for such detailed explanations and personal experiences with this issue.  I'm asking the question since it's been quite some time since this thread was active.  I booked Ruby #731 based on so many glowing reviews and cruisers saying that if it's ever available, grab it quickly.   I have realized that all of those posts were pre Covid and things have greatly changed, not just for the last couple of mini suites on Emerald deck but indeed for all of the aft cabins.  There are very few cabins left for our Jan. Ruby Princess sailing but I'm inclined to switch back to my normal Caribe balcony and forego the mini suite with that awesome balcony.  Do those of you who have experienced this recently wish that you had been sailing in a different cabin?  I have to make the decision today.  🤔

We had E729 and E731 on the Ruby Princess for a 10 day Alaska cruise earlier this summer.  We never experienced any issues with smoke or the connecting door either.  I believe the smoking area for passengers on the beck below  is a few cabins forward of those two cabins.  Plus it was an Alaska cruise so more people may have used the casino for smoking.
